Which character could return for Kingsman: The Secret Service sequel?

02.17.2015

Kingsman: The Secret Service Matthew Vaughn Colin Firth Samuel L. Jackson Taron Egerton

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY dominated the box office over Valentine's Day weekend, but KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE was no slouch either in second place, pulling in over $30 million in U.S. theaters. So far the Matthew Vaughn-directed comic book adaptation has grossed $85 million worldwide, and if it continues to perform well, there might be another movie.

While speaking with USA Today, Matthew Vaughn said a certain actor could return for the sequel, which is a bit of surprise, considering what happened to the character in the film. Why is it a surprise? Well, that would be a huge spoiler, so you know what that means. Yup, I'll meet back up with you after the KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE image below.

Kingsman: The Secret Service Matthew Vaughn Colin Firth Samuel L. Jackson Taron Egerton

So after Colin Firth's Harry Hart brutally kills a bunch of hate group churchgoers (due to a signal that causes people to become uncontrollably violent), he is shot in the head by Samuel L. Jackson's Richmond Valentine. It was a very unexpected death (at least to those who haven't read the Mark Millar comic or saw those spoilery 2013 BTS pics), but Matthew Vaughn says he's trying to figure out a way for Firth to return in the sequel.

A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.

Colin Firth's Hart could always appear in a flashback, but it's also possible the bullet didn't kill him. There wasn't a close up of his body after he is shot, and since he is a spy, maybe he had a gadget that saved his life. However, even if Firth does end up in the sequel, Vaughn says it will continue Eggsy's (Taron Egerton) story.

The sequel will be ‘This is the modern-day gentleman spy.’ Because Harry isn’t. Harry even says, ‘There is a reason why we’ve developed weak chins.’ He said that meaning, ‘Look at us, we need to get new blood into this system,’ and that’s what Eggsy is. I joke that we’ve made the prequel to the Eggsy movie.

While part of me feels that bringing Harry Hart back in a follow-up would lessen the impact of his shocking death in KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, I would love to see Colin Firth kicking ass again as Hart. Do you think Firth's character should stay dead, or do you want him to appear in the sequel?

Colin Firth is the man now.

Certainly a far cry from Mr. Darcy.

Arthur & Merlin

I'm wondering if Merlin will be promoted to Arthur's position or maybe a new actor will come in entirely. Like Pierce Brosnan or even Judy Dench haha. (I'm only half kidding about Dench)

I have faith that Vaughn will go the direction that his gut tells him. I love the first movie so fucking much that I'm fine with whatever they want to do.

His gut isn't always right. He wanted to use a younger actor for 70s Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

This is more his speed, though. And Colin Firth needs to return.

I'm torn

On the one hand, it makes the world more dangerous and exciting that a beloved character like Harry Hart can die, and stay dead. On the other hand, Colin Firth was so phenomenal in the role that I'd love to see him return. It really was a game-changer for him, I thought.

P.S.- If you haven't seen KINGSMAN yet, DO IT!!!!

such a fun flick

I'd love for his character to come back, but for good reasons. In flashback would be obvious, or maybe as an A.I. running Kingsman's computer system with him appearing in VR or an hologram. Or they'll go full Soap Opera and he'll be the lost twin brother...

I think it would be cool to pick up a week after the first and Harry is alive. Then Eggsy and the girl is are told that the whole thing was a final test... that the real threats are far more dangerous than the Valentine "test". It could be a cool twist on the series and manage to bring back a loved character to continue teaching the newest members. Just an idea.

If they continue with the Bond theme

I would love if a SPECTRE like organization existed in the world of Kingsman or an ex-Kingsman agent turned rogue makes a return. Either way, there needs to be a sequel.

Would be great to see Roger Moore take over the 'Arthur' role.

He was wanted for the part, at the beginning. So that would be logical. But, considering how Kingsmen are selected, it would be complex to explain... Still I'd love it too.

It could work, if they convince Roger Moore to unretire. They didn't show all the Kingsmen, so there were obviously others (Gawain, Bedivere) on assignment somewhere else. But, if Moore refuses again, Timothy Dalton would be an even better choice, IMO. He was an underrated Bond, and so good in HOT FUZZ.

Staying Dead

Doesn't anyone stay dead anymore?! Jesus, why don't they just make a TV show about Harry. Worked for Agent Toulson. :/

I would hope if there is a sequel, that Firth would return. Obviously they didn't show a close up of his body for a reason and the fact that he was playing against type and did a great job with the role just makes me want to see him return to kick even more ass.
