Who are the Nova Corps and why might they be in Guardians of the Galaxy?

Nova

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is definitely the wild card of Marvel's Phase 2 plans. It's not the most well known superhero team and it's a little quirky. I mean one of the guys IS a raccoon. A bad ass raccoon, but a raccoon nonetheless. So why not add another super group to the mix that's going to have a lot of people saying, "Who are we talking about?"

AintItCool.Com has a source claiming that the Nova Corps will appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Apparently someone from the production team let it slip that the group will be in the film. Later while researching some leads, they came across what looked like Nova Corps ships in some of the production art for the flick. In addition, there's an article at Entertainment Weekly about the new Guardians and Nova comics that also suggests the space cops (and Iron Man) could show up in the film.

Since this isn't confirmed by a studio or anything, don't be that surprised if this doesn't turn out to be completely true. There are a ton of rumors floating out there for all the upcoming comic book movies and you're going to have to wait it out until all the facts about these films are established.

So who in the hell are the Nova Corps?

Nova Corps are essentially Marvel's version of DC's Green Lanterns. I've put a short description about the group from Wikipedia below and you can read the full entry here.

The Nova Corps was originally a space militia and exploration group for the planet Xander. It consisted of 500 soldiers ranging in rank from Corpsman up to Centurion and its leader Centurion Nova Prime. The source of the Nova Corps power is called the Nova Force which is an unlimited energy generated by a living computer called the Xandarian Worldmind. The Nova Corps have two priorities: defend the Xandarian civilization and protect and safeguard the Xandarian Worldmind.

It would make sense for at least one (probably Nova Prime) Corps character to show up since most of the film is going to be set in space and the Nova Corps are pretty much a cosmic police force. The question I have though: who are these groups going to be battling in the movie?

What are your thoughts on this? Is space big enough for both superhero teams?

Extra Tidbit: Who would have thought five years ago that we'd be talking about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and NOVA CORPS movies instead of GREEN LANTERN?

Who in the hell are the Nova Corps?

They are cannon fodder for Thanos and a chance for him to show how tough he is. Expect the following exchange:
"Oh, frak, man, he just wiped out the entire corps! We're all that's left!"
"That's it! It's over! We don't stand a chance against him!"
"No! As long as we're still alive the galaxy still has a chance of being saved!"
I mean, sure, they are going to make it sound original and I hope they do or it will come across as cheesy.

Risky

Even though I'm a fan of the Nova Corps storyline, I always fear the propensity of the "Superhero" movie putting too much into the mix. They did it in SM 3 and Wolverine. Sometimes less is more. A racoon is already going to strain the limits of the average moviegoers ability to suspend belief. Now you throw human rockets into the stew? Could work, but it's risky. imo.
