Who is Destro now?

Allow me to expound on that unbearably clever headline: British actor Christopher Eccleston, one of many guys who has played DR. WHO, is now going to wear the polished mask of G.I. JOE foe Destro.

Yes, the part of the international mercenary had reportedly been filled by a stage actor named David Murray, but that guy apparently has absolutely shit luck -- the story is he couldn't get a visa to travel for the project (it starts filming today), and the role needed to be quickly recast. Fortunately for the production, Eccleston was available and seems to currently have either low standards or a new Aston Martin he's been eyeballing, so he agreed to the easy paycheck.

The G.I. JOE movie is being directed by THE MUMMY wrangler Stephen Sommers, and actually has assembled a fairly interesting and diverse cast (although I think we'd all rather pretend Marlon Wayans isn't involved). With the strike all but settled, the script will likely now be thoroughly rewritten during the course of production (I'm guessing).

While he's probably best known to American audiences for his role on HEROES, Eccleston has fared far better when simply avoiding Hollywood films (as a point of reference, compare GONE IN 60 SECONDS and THE SEEKER: THE DARK IS RISING to 28 DAYS LATER, OTHELLO and ELIZABETH).
Extra Tidbit: Eccleston's breakthrough came with roles in the popular UK crime series CRACKER, and with Ewan McGregor in Danny Boyle's flatmate thriller SHALLOW GRAVE.

Awesome!

This is a great choice for Destro, i'm very plesed with this casting. Alot of people are bad mouthing this but latino Review gave an amazing review of the script they are working with calling it "A+, a love letter to fans". Im not down with the director, but i've been enjoying the casting and if the script is there like they are saying, Then Im there. Cant wait.

Awesome casting! I love Eccelston, not only because he's a great actor, but because he brought back The Doctor. Looking forward to his turn in G.I. JOE, which I've been a bit on the fence about, but I'm willing to give it a chance.

Oh, and my thing about Wayans' casting, does anyone remember a little film called REQUIEM FOR A DREAM? He was actually pretty damn good in that. So I'm blaming his horrible career choices aside from that for the bad rap. But that's me.

Nice choice, but...

...still not the best. A much needed improvement over David Murray though! As for Snake Eyes - who cares? He wears a mask and doesn't talk! A martial arts stuntman could easily fill the shoes. Still on the fence about the Wayans casting, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Decent cast...

...hope Sommers doesn't screw it up.

Snake Eyes is being played by Ray "Darth Maul" Park, which is brilliant because Snake Eyes wears a mask and doesn't talk.

Who's playing Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, I think is what is most important?

I think I'll probably be passing on G.I. Joe when it comes out, unless of course I'm dragged along to it by a group of friends. Eccleston is great though, definitely check out Cracker if you haven't already, Eccleston and Robbie Coltrane are great in it, and it has guest stars along the lines of Samantha Morton and Robert Carlyle.

Awesome

This is great news, I've been a huge fan of Eccelston since the return of Who a few years ago. I always thought he would be a great villian.
