Who will be the focus of the first stand-alone Star Wars film?

02.05.2013

swbannerThe STAR WARS universe has many great characters (especially the first trilogy) and everyone has their favorite. This isn't limited to the obvious ones like Han Solo or Darth Vader. Over the years characters like Boba Fett and Grand Moff Tarkin have gained a cult following for their own reasons, as have most of the other supporting characters. So when news first broke about a stand-alone STAR WARS film everyone had their own idea about which character would tell tell the best story.

Harry Knowles at AICN believes that the first stand-alone movie will be focused on...Yoda.

"The first Stand Alone film is going to center upon YODA.  At this stage specifics are sparse, but Kathleen Kennedy is putting together a STAR WARS slate...  I'm wildly curious for more details on the YODA film - would this be a young or old YODA tale?"

This is based on things he has heard about expansions being done in the California Adventure Park as well as other sources.

It's a little...underwhelming isn't it?

Don't get me wrong: I love the green guy. But the FIRST stand-alone feature film? It makes sense to use one of the characters as well known as Yoda; I get that. But I have this weird feeling (and it might just be because Disney's involved) that they may use Yoda to attract the younger age demographic, especially if it's related to the theme park. That doesn't mean a Yoda film would be bad, but it doesn't excite me like a Fett or Jabba the Hutt movie would. But since Disney is going to try to keep us in the dark on a lot of this news until they HAVE to say something, lets hope they have a trick up their sleeve to really sell us on Yoda.

Yoda

JABBA??

You would rather see a movie about a musty overweight slug mobster than a little green monkey who uses a lightsaber and the force? Poor show

In the very rare circumstances I would say this, CGI Yoda. But I'd prefer it a lot of the creatures were created with practical effects.

I agree with Conrad. A Rogue Squadron movie would be the tits. They could also easily do a Jedi Academy movie with Luke/Mark Hamill with a minor but awesome role. The thing I don't want it another goddam prequel. In the words of Patton Oswalt: "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT WHERE THE STUFF I LOVE COMES FROM! I JUST LOVE THE STUFF I LOVE!"

As much as I love Yoda, and I do, I'm kind of tired of learning people's backstories. The problem with prequels is the tension level is at rock bottom, because you

Just continue. Push forward. Tell us new stories with new characters set in a gigantic universe. We don't need to keep revisiting the same six people.

C'mon everybody, there is no possible way this is true...at all. It's either misinformation in a classic Abrams style, or, as the article indicates, it's just a conclusion drawn from amusement park changes by a guy who is just as eager and desperate for some shred of information as we are.

I just cant see a tiny cgi green thing dominating 2 to 2.5 hrs of screen time. While Yoda is a powerful figure in Star Wars lore, for big screen purposes he's great as a supporting background character. If The Clone Wars cartoon can bring back Darth Maul, there's no reason they cant for the movies.

I think it makes sense from a marketing point of view to start with Yoda - Yoda sells. Here in the UK we're inundated with painfully crappy Vodafone adverts with Yoda - I think that's part of what turns me off this idea, but I'll reserve judgement till we hear more.
Personally, I'd like a Wedge/Rogue Squadron movie...

Hmm, I think it's too early to tell whether this is a good or bad idea. Maybe we need to hear more about the plot.

no thank you

as far as Star Wars solo films go, Yoda should be first in line.

However, doing a solo film now is a bad idea. Since they are doing a new trilogy, throwing in none canon films is just adding distracting. Disney should focus on one plot thread at a time instead of spreading themselves thin among completely separate movies. I'd be for this if they hadn't announce episode 7 already but they have. And how do they expect main stream audiences to react to it. Having one film set in this year

Having one film set in this year (star-date?) and then jumping to a prequel with next to nothing to do with episode 7, and then go back to episode 8. They would be jumping all over the place only to make a buck that's not gonna work in the long run. Just push episode 7 to 2016 like Abrams wants and bump Tron 3 to a Christmas 2015. That gets your sci-fi fix without confusing audiences or over playing your star wars hand

The first films were about the heroes. The second trilogy was about the bad guy. The four other characters you mention as being cool and interesting, and for which you'd like to see stand-alone films, are bad guys: Fett, Jabba and Tarkin. I'm all for this cult of the anti-hero thing that is prevalent in today's culture, but I think Star Wars, as a throwback to a time when our heroes were actual good guys (much like LotR), works best when it focuses on good guys. Some obvious choices might be Wedge or Windu or even Yoda... but it might also be interesting to get new central characters, and see some of the bigger names as peripherals. Just stay the fuck away from Jar-Jar.

I'd just position myself uncomfortably on the fence on this one until we get more details. A Yoda film could work, certainly if it delved into the history of the Jedi. If they're planning something akin to a Muppet movie set on Dagobah before he meets Luke, then perhaps not so much. Keeping an open mind for now.

I have to respectfully disagree. I think a Yoda movie would be fantastic (if done right, of course, but that goes without saying for any movie).

However, I can see where you might have reservations with the whole "younger audience" angle. If this was strictly kid-centric, I'd be pretty steamed.

Im against solo movies (for now anyway) for reasons i dont want to get into here. But if they must, here's what i would like to see.

1. Yoda Movie: based on Yoda earning rank of Master and first business on Jedi Council
2. Boba Fett: random mission set before events of original film
3. Han Solo and Chewbacca meeting and first run (Kessel Run?)
4. Jar-Jar Binks: have a 10 minute movie where Jar Jar gets beaten and executed. Release it in theaters. You can get 100 showings a day at each

Sounds great

So it wont take place after episode 6. If they were to make an stand alone that do take place after film 6, then a Han-movie would be really cool.

Well now that Star Wars is in the hands of people that may actually care about the fans and use talent behind the camera why not a Yoda movie. Hell if this all goes well you could have a movie for each character, in ten years they may be doing movies about the Cantina Band. The thing you have to remember is that if all goes well, hell if all goes even lukewarmly we will be getting many, many more Star Wars movies.

I'm calling disinformation on this

this sounds like just another B.S. rumour. Let's hold off on the speculation until we have a synopsis or at least a cast list.

You can not be serious, Yoda is the Man! What, isn't he tall and handsome enough for ya? If this is true I would love to see him back in a swampy jungle like where we first met him.

Choose different characters

There are too many rich characters to explore in Star Wars to make Yoda the focus. In comics and novels, they really fleshed out many of the Jedi sitting on the council and I'd rather see one of them. Ki Adi Mundi, A'Sharad Hett, and Assaj Ventress are particularly fascinating.

Sure

One of my favorite moments in the prequels was when Yoda turned into Jackie Chan with the lightsaber at the end of Ep2. It shouldn't be a biopic, but just a standalone Kung Fu style movie surrounding some event involving Yoda prior to episode one, preferably with lots of lightsabers wielded by actors with martial arts experience (Darth Maul), and with sparse dialog from Yoda.

I'm not so concerned who the focus is as long as it's heavy on everything Jedi. If you don't have Jedi's and light saber battles, it's not Star Wars.

death troopers

my pick for stand-alone star wars movie would be "death troopers", the zombie-prison barge story from a few years ago. zombie horror in the star wars universe? with a dash of han and chewie? and a derelict star destroyer? yep.

just a few thoughts

Ok, so people say 'cool, they will listen what the fans want' and things like that...
But think about it. If you'd created a whole Universe, would you like to be dictated what to do with it, or would you do what you wants with YOUR creation ? Beside, on Joblo, you're always complaining about the majority being wrong, by transforming turd into box office success, and KNOW, you want THIS majority to decide the fate of STAR WARS ?
Another thing... By making standalone prequels (as with this Yoda

Another thing... By making standalone prequels (as with this Yoda film), aren't you afraid they might reintroduce loved characters, played by new and, obviously, younger actors... To later use those 'old' characters, played by 'new' actors in STAR WARS VII, VIII... ?
Then again... Just a thought...

Stand Alone?

I thought I had been following the Star Wars 7 news, but somehow I missed the announcement that this new film would be a "stand alone" film. So it is NOT going to be chronologically after Return of the Jedi?

Nah I think they are going to be starting the Stand Alone series of movies as well as finishing or continuing the original series. There are an infinite number of stories to tell, and now that George is out of the way they can tell them.

Ah, ok...well then in that case, Yoda isn't a bad choice. Why not? He's got centuries of story to tell.

This could be okay. But instead of beginning with a stand alone film that no one is asking for, why not begin with one that folks are interested in seeing:

If they are going to go with the Yoda route then I hope they end up going for motion capture instead of pure CGI. Get Andy Serkis on that pronto. Although for voice continuity I hope they can still get Frank Oz, or if not at least Tom Kane from Clone Wars.

I wonder if they could get Stuart Freeborn into a Mo-cap suit.

I had an idea for an Yoda story set when he was a young kick-butt Jedi, thought it would've been be pretty good...

isn't Zack Snyder attached to the "stand-alone star wars movie"?

i'm already seeing some fiery cave where yoda with lightsaber is leaping at some creature in super slow motion as the camera rotates around him.
