Who will Benicio Del Toro play in Guardians of the Galaxy?

Jun. 5, 2013by:

The moment that Benicio Del Toro joined GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY it seemed that was the moment that people started getting really excited. Who would he be playing? Many placed their bets on Thanos. I also saw a couple of people who mentioned Doctor Strange. But according to a "very reliable source" of ComicBookMovie.com it's another character entirely.

If the source does indeed have the goods on the scoop then it looks like the actor will play the part of Taneleer Tivan, but you might know him better as The Collector. However as CBM points out, the addition of The Collector is not exactly new news. When it was announced that Ophelia Lovibond was joining the cast it was mentioned that she would play the aide to Tivan. At the time though, there was no one in the role of Tivan.

When Del Toro was cast, it was said that he would be in multiple future Marvel movies. So how will The Collector fill in with the rest of the Universe? Or do you think that CBM got it wrong and that he's got to be either Thanos or Doctor Strange?

He could be the Collector I guess. My money is still on Doctor Strange though.

Thanos is a totally viable option but I can outright guarantee you that he's not playing Dr. Strange. Not because he'd be bad in the part or anything, he's an awesome actor and would do just fine, but because Dr. Strange just wouldn't have any business being in Guardians of the Galaxy. I mean in the comics they just really do not overlap at all, it'd be like using Captain America to introduce Blade. It'd just be a really, really unnatural fit. I can totally see them using Guardians as a

I can totally see them using Guardians as a springboard for Nova (which they are) or Adam Warlock, but not for Dr. Strange. He has actual encounters with Captain America and Thor, so it'd make much more sense, if they are going to intro him, to do so in one of those films.

I still think he'll be Thanos, but The Collector is cool. Either way, I am hoping he's playing a villain.

The Collector in multiple Marvel movies? I hope the source is wrong and Del Toro is Thanos. Unless of course Marvel has someone else in mind for Thanos.

If Del Toro is playing the Collector then they have someone else in mind for Thanos. The Collector for those not in the know is a huge player in Avengers lore. The Collector "collects" beings and artifacts of other worlds because he had a vision that certain beings would rise up, determined to destroy the universe. One of them is Michael Korvac rumored to be played by Lee Pace. His wife is Carina, daughter of The Collector and rumored to be played by Ophelia Lovibond. The other is... Thanos. If

If the Collector is in multiple films, it is very likely he's involved with whatever the hell the Avengers are doing in Avengers 2. If Korvac is the villain Whedon is talking about, I can see why he's so excited.

Major props for the knowlege you just posted, unlike most people who pretend to know what they are talking & seem like they pasted it from wiki. I admit I am not too familiar with Guardians, so I can appreciate this post.

I thought it was already confirmed that Lee Pace was playing the main antagonist and that it won't be Thanos, but Ronin the Accuser?

Haha, I was just going to explain all of that, thanks for saving me the trouble. Yeah, I am like 90% convinced that Pace is playing either Korvac or Richard Rider and I would be incredibly happy with either being true. If they are going to use Korvac, I'd rather they use him in this film, because even though the Korvac Saga would work perfectly well for an Avengers film, I'm really hoping they'll base Avengers 2 on Infinity Gauntlet.

I really hope he's Thanos...

Ever since that rumor started I've got that into my head and it just works every time. If he ends up being The Collector I'll support it cause he's a good actor and he feels wasted to me in our current movie world.

DelToro already has wrinkles like The Collector. He's born to play The Collector.

He's got to be playing Thanos. The hint that he'll be appearing in multiple Marvel movies and he really has the build to play the villain.

Thanos

He could pull it off easy, and would make a GREAT main villian for the Avengers

The Collector?

Come on to waste an actor like Del Toro on a d-list (at best) villian like the Collector is a crime to all film fans and fanboys alike. If he's not a top name for the marvel verse then this would be there first major mistake in there film verse. Please make him Thanos or Dr. Strange he would be fantastic in both roles. (speaking of fantastic he is also one of the few people on earth that I think could pull of Dr.Doom in a real way. Just my two cents)

I can't really see him playing Dr. Strange, but I think Thanos would be a great role for him in the movies. And since they said he'd be appearing in multiple movies that would be the best bet that he's playing Thanos. Having him play The Collector is such a waste of talent, and how could you really parlay The Collector for multiple movies? I mean I know how, but in the grand scheme of things I doubt Marvel would use the character as a main catalyst for The Avengers or something to warrant

Overarching Phase 2-3 Plot

First off, I'm down -- glad Benicio's joining this all-star series of films. His talent will not be wasted.
Sure, Thanos was the assumed casting originally, since he's the only character we know (with moderate certainty) that'll span these films. But what about the overarching plot for these next films? I'd think there'd HAVE to be more recurring characters, like this Collector guy. Knowing nothing about The Collector or the objects he collects... could The Collector be the one formidable

I'd think there'd HAVE to be more recurring characters, like this Collector guy. Knowing nothing about The Collector or the objects he collects... could The Collector be the one formidable foe of Thanos, who's trying to nab all these cosmic artifacts to bring about total destruction of the universe? The Infinity Gauntlet's already been teased -- is The Collector trying to get all the gems so Thanos doesn't? I'd think The Collector would be a small presence in the films leading up to Avengers 2 or 3, but in The Avengers 2 or 3, he goes up against Thanos and DIES, paving the way for the Avengers to have to take down this galactic baddie. Show that a being such as The Collector was killed, making the odds of smaller beings defeating Thanos next to impossible. Hah, total spitballing from a non-comic guy (who'd like to be a reading-more-comics guy). Dunno if The Collector and Thanos are in league with each other. I read a lot ABOUT comics, but I second whoever below gave major props to the guys who know their shit.

I actually like this idea. Instead of having a single entity (Thanos) dominating the galaxy, having the Collector come in as the opposing force, with his own agenda sounds exciting--especially if played by Del Toro. The Collector could easily be a foe of the Guardians, work for Thanos, but later betray him which could set up the plot of The Avengers 2 or 3.
