The story of THE HOBBIT takes places about 60 years before the events of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. As such, we're gonna get to see a few of the old characters we've come to love and cosplay return in some capacity.

Peter Jackson, talking to MTV while doing press for THE LOVELY BONES, kinda sorta lets us know who to expect: "Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise. There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett. They are elves, so once again, in the realm of Middle-earth, they're immortal, they don't age."

THE HOBBIT is currently set for a December 2011 release. Expect to hear real actual concrete information about casting and what not after the new year.

Extra Tidbit: I know I'm not alone, but my fingers are crossed for Aragorn/Viggo Mortensen to appear in the second film. I mean, really, how could they not?

More cameos...?
I realized that I left off quite a few POSSIBLE cameos/new characters that could take a role in the Hobbit.

For example, Beorn actually mentions that he used to see Radagast now and again. Will we see Radagast the Brown...say, after Gandalf and Thorin and co depart, perhaps a scene with Radagast arriving for a cup of tea with Beorn, discussing Gandalf's sudden departure...

And since the White Council meets DURING the Hobbit, *AND* they attack Dol Goldur, and if they show all this, then we have to have:

Saruman

Gandalf

Cirdan (not shown in LOTR movie)

Galadriel

Elrond

Sauron

(maybe Nazgul? Were they at Dol Goldur, or were they reforming in Minis Morgul?)

Personally, I'd prefer this happen in flashback mode in the 2nd movie. Let the 1st be all about "The Hobbit" and leave as a mystery where Gandalf gets to (perhaps, again, a hint by Radagast to Beorn?).

If you put the white council and the attack on Dol Goldur into the 1st movie you completely detract from the flow of the main story, which is about Thorin and Co.

Still around?
This whole quote makes me nervous. It sounds like he doesn't understand the timeline of story. The events in The Hobbit took place years before the events in Lord of the Rings, so why would Gandlaf "still be around"? Maybe I'm just misunderstanding his words... I hope so.

I think he was just too quick with his words. I think he meant "so obviously he's around"

Actually true. However during the time of "The Hobbit", Aragorn was a 10 year old boy, living in Rivendell. (Not 26 as earlier speculated). Check timeline here:

I havent read the books, but I loved the movies. Truly epic.

If someone could please clarify this really quick for me......

Aragorn is human right??? How can he be in this movie?? He was like 30 in the LOTR movies. But Doctor Supertramp said he is 87....?

idk, i havent read the books so this confuses me

Actually I think he tells Eowyn in TTT that he is in his late 80s or early 90s. He is not only human, but a descendent of Numenor (who were all long lived).

drexxxelll...Stone Giants must appear!
They all got to be in, seeing how they are making two films out of one book. Since they want to include extra material, Aragorn and Saruman would probably show up too. And Legolas is from Mirkwood, right?

Excited
Very excited for both movies.

I'm feeling a younger Aragorn coming on. Remember he was 87 in the LOTR movies/books so with The Hobbit being 60 years before. It only makes sense.

Aragorn cameo would be great
I'm all over this movie: I was bouncing like a little kid when I went to see FotR at a preview screening, and Jackson didn't disappoint.

There would have been no problems getting McKellen back: a friend of mine saw him speak at an X-Men fan screening and he said, "When I die, I want printed on my gravestone, 'He played Gandalf!'"

It's a shame they can't use Ian...

It's a shame they can't use Ian Holm as Bilbo but he's probably too old for the action scenes.

I'm glad Ian McKellen is coming back because if not that would have cut my interest in the new movie by about half.

Viggo!
If there's a place in the story for him, you can bet your nuts Viggo will be back. The man IS Aragorn.

Legolas?
I'd give this hombre a decent shot of appearing in the scenes involving the dwarves' capture in Mirkwood by the Wood elves (isn't Legolas supposed to be their prince?).

Aragorn....
Aragorn would've been, what...

CORRECTION: he was a 10 year old boy in Rivendell during "The Hobbit". You can't have Viggo play that part.

I wonder which characters they will cut out (ala "Tom Bombadil")?

In chronological order, I'd give the chances of appearing in the movie as:

Bilbo : 100%

Gandalf : 100%
