Why Howard was fired

11.03.2008by:

Up until now we were left only to speculate why Terrence Howard was being replaced by Don Cheadle in IRON MAN 2. Now, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, we have some answers. Basically it was two reasons. Here's what went down: if you can believe this, Howard was the highest paid cast member on IRON MAN. Higher than Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges (this comes in part because Howard was the first actor to sign on to the film). Now during the filming of IRON MAN, director Jon Favreau was reportedly unhappy with Howard's performance in the film and while developing the sequel with writer Justin Theroux, they were drastically reducing the storyline for Rhodey and, theoretically War Machine. Marvel caught wind of this and weren't thrilled about paying Howard all that money for barely any screentime so they went to his agents with a salary renegotiation that included a more than 50% paycut. His reps were obviously not thrilled. Sounds like passive aggressive negotiating as clearly his reps could not accept such a drastically reduced salary and Marvel was able to hire Don Cheadle and allow Favreau to redevelop the Rhodey/War Machine character, which is what Marvel wanted in the first place. I'd be interested now to hear what Howard and Favreau have to say about all this but neither has spoken on the record since so we'll have to wait...

Extra Tidbit: What exactly do you think was Favreau's issue with Howard's performance and/or on-set behavior?

Damn...well if all that's true, that's most unfortunate.

For the record, I really liked Howard in this movie, but again: I love Don Cheadle, so I'll welcome the change.

Howard definitely had the look, and i am sure Howard can play a part with more intensity, but if the director doesnt say anything, what the hell is he supposed to do exactly.

Wow that was dumb of me. Okafor absolutely does not deserve the salary he is getting from the Bobcats.

It appeared to me that the Rhodes character was not quite as "bad ass" as he was in the comics. I always looked at Rhodey as being akin to Race Bannon from Johnny Quest...bodyguard, ass kicker and good friend. I just didn't get that feeling from Mr. Howard. Maybe that was Mr. Favreau's problem, but if that is true then it is his fault as the director for not saying "hey that's not quite how I envisioned Rhodey" and fix it.

Howard's mess-up

Personally I understand Favreu's dislike of Howard's performance, ever since the first footage of Ironman hit where the dog fight was taking place, Howard's performance in that single clip wasn't that good, after I saw the film he ran with the same soft and passive attitude through the whole film, I would of thought this character would be tough and strict, but he wasn't a convincing govt. pilot, I don't know maybe Cheadle will give the character more credibility, I'll admit it Howard has the

Who?

Chemeka Okafor? That's an NBA player. Perhaps you mean Chiwetel Ejiofor, who, while is an excellent actor, I wouldn't want to see filling Howard's shoes. I though Howard did a great job as Rhodey, and Don Cheadle has a lot to live up to. Cheadle is a brilliant actor, and I have faith in his ability, but I hate seeing character changes in movie franchises. It totally removes the audience from the experience.

Cheadle

After seeing Traitor, I can kind of see Don Cheadle being a little action oriented, but there wasn't enough action in it for me to see him as War Machine. I know Cheadle is known for being more of a thesp in his acting gigs, bringing more emotionality to the roles; but the Robert Downey, Jr being the hero with the bleeding heart, it might be a little too much if Cheadle brings the same.

The role should have gone to Chemeka Okafor (sp?) who in my opinion is the best black actor in Hollywood at this moment. However, I have much respect for both Cheadle and Howard. All in all I enjoyed Howard's performance in Iron Man. This contract deal is all about the money anyway. I dont necessarily buy that Favreau was disappointed by Howard's performance.

"...Marvel was able to hire Don Cheadle and allow Favreau to redevelop the Rhodey/War Machine character, which is what Marvel wanted in the first place."

I think it sounds like now Howard is gone they're going to go back and beef up the role to how they wanted it.

I didn't mind Howard's performance, but I guess if the director is looking for something different it's his call. And I don't doubt that Cheadle will bring something good to the role.

really?

Really T Howard? You're making millions all the time.. why couldn't you just take a pay cut, show up for a week to film your scenes on Iron Man and go to do something else? It's kinda sad that this whole thing happened. They had great chemistry together...

Now, don't get me wrong, I like Cheadle better then Howard.. I do. But in any sequel or trilogy having an actor replaced by someone else and playing the same role really bugs me.. it kinda ruins the vibe of the movie.. I just don't

But if it means a bigger role for War Machine then I guess I have to take it.

Glad they did this

i never really liked his acting. i tried to so many times because so many studios kept handing him big roles. but heres the deal, he is always playing the main leading type of character, yet he looks and talks soft and not intimidating nor tough at all. the role in iron man should not have been by him. they need someone, like cheadle, who can be both very friendly and tough and military like.

all i ever think of him doing in every one of his movis is just pouting and acting upset.

For Christ's sake people. Have some of you no shame? Terrance Howard is an excellent actor. Don Cheadle is an excellent actor. THEY'RE BOTH GOOD ACTORS!!! Yeah, Cheadle has a longer, better track record as an actor, but for people on this site to slam Howard as an "arrogant & selfish person" is just plain idiotic. NONE OF US were on the set or in Favreau's head to know what happened. I personally liked Terrance Howard in Iron Man, and I don't understand why he's out, but at least I can

NICE

Awesome. He was fired cause of his performance. He does seem really arrogant and selffish person.

His acting gets on my nerves... big time.

Glad he is out...

Howard gave, by far, the worst performance of the movie. I think Howard had his moment in the sun and seems to be a dying star at this point, and Cheadle has proven himself over and over again...I think this is a good move.

Looking back all I can think of that I like him in is Crash, so I'm all for this recasting decision.

I'm not sure what to believe as of right now till Favreau says something.

Howard had good chemistry with Downey so I'm upset that he won't be in the sequel, but Cheadle will do well I'm sure.

I've read this article and the one on EW.com, but both left me with the same question:

Did Favreau and Theroux lessen the Rhodey role in the sequel because of unhappiness with Howard and now that he's gone they're free to expand it...

or will Cheadle be playing the same minimal supporting role?

NOT MUCH

To be honest Howard really didn't add much to the storyline. His character came off as disposable. He reminded me a bit of the Max Shreck's son in Batman Returns. He was there, had some contribution, but not enough to matter. Not as inffective as the butler in Spiderman-3 but ineffective enough to not make me long to see him as War Machine.

Does it really matter?

I rather have a better War Machine, with better story and actions in the movie then a half assed lame side kick. If War Machine comes out being bigger and more bad ass for the move, then they can have anyone playing Rhodey. In the comics and movie, Rhodey was mostly useless until he got his own suit so now that he does this seems to be a win to me. Also I think Cheadle is a much better actor then Howard. Plus its not to surprising to me Howard was paid the most. He has been in more then a few

I don't blame them.

Well you can't blame them. I'm sure there's a budget increase for the sequel and why pay out the most for a character that doesn't have a substantial part? Plus, I may be in the minority here, but I think Howard's performance was too effeminate for Rhodey...much less War Machine.

It's not surprising that Howard was more paid than Downey: you have to realize that RDJ came with a lot of baggage and probably had as little leverage as an actor can have. If Favreau didn't like his performance, the recast, although I don't like it, would make some sense.

As for the allegedly difficult on-set behavior, tell the actor first or don't complain at all. It wouldn't look like you're just making up excuses.

I love how everyone pinned this on Marvel from the get go. We really love giving studios a hard time. Who would have known it was Fav all along?

I say good. Don's the better actor anyway.

2 surprises: Howards got paid even higher than Downey, Jr.?? & War Machine story got reduced?? Come on, now that they have Cheadle in the roster list, they better have some more screentime for War Machine, at least.

Why dont they just do what Coppolla did to Clemenza in GODFATHER II & just kill him off -- Thats why this story doesnt make sense; he's not a main character , why go through the effort of replacing him if the screen time is reduced ? I think Favreau isnt speaking because Marvel is strong arming him.
