Wicked and trippy trailer for The Congress starring Robin Wright and Harvey Keitel

The first international trailer for THE CONGRESS, starring Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Danny Huston, Paul Giamatti, and Kodi Smit-McPhee has arrived and it's an odd, trippy, and wicked looking affair. Written and directed by Ari Folman, who did the brilliant documentary WALTZ WITH BASHIR, which was equally trippy in that it used animation to recount a tale of war. Now, Folman is adapting SOLARIS author Stanislaw Lem's novel The Futurological Congress to the big screen with a compelling twist by utilizing actress Robin Wright as herself in a fictional tale.

It looks like a terrific and wild blend of live-action and animation and it's likely it will pluck many of the sci-fi thematic elements from Lem's novel and fit them nicely into Wright's angle of the story. This is cool-looking stuff for sure.

Check it out:

Here's the brief synopsis:

An aging, out-of-work actress accepts one last job, though the consequences of her decision affect her in ways she didn't consider.

I really enjoyed WALTZ WITH BASHIR and recommend it to fans of animation (and documentaries). Folman has a very distinct style and vision for filmmaking and it's a welcome voice to be sure. This will be an acid trip of fun, no doubt, and I look forward to catching it.

THE CONGRESS will play this month at Cannes with a release date TBD.

Extra Tidbit: One of my favorite live-action/animation hybrid films is Ralph Bakshi's Cool World with Brad Pitt, Kim Basinger, and Gabriel Byrne. Definitely an underappreciated pic.

Even as a cartoon Keitel manages to get naked. Classic.

Cool World was one of the biggest letdowns I've ever experienced.

That's a crazy-cool concept. I like how it's meta without being too smug about it, and it feels like it could be a much, much trippier S1m0ne.

Oh Cool World ...

Made Jessica Rabbit seem puritanical. I remember my dad would not take me to see it, I had to wait a couple years later to rent it as I was ready for it. Kim Basinger stayed on my top 5 for many years. The lead was this guy that went on to become Brad Pitt in Fight Club. He was just a face before that.

I'm gonna have to call you out on this. It was actually « 12 Monkeys » that made Pitt more than just a face.

looks fantastic

after the brilliant sucker-punch final image (which was completely horrifying) of
WALTZ WITH BASHIR... a move that put weight on the tragedies of that film
which might have seem fanciful due to the animation, this looks like another
great work!

Looks pretty interesting, though I feel like 3D animation would have been more fitting in a story about performance capture (assuming that is, in fact, the central plot). Maybe it was a budgetary decision, or maybe the filmmakers just really like traditional animation, but it seems like an odd choice.
