Will Bruce Campbell be returning for the Evil Dead remake?

Jul. 21, 2011by:

There weren't many fans who were excited about the prospects of an EVIL DEAD remake, even if it is produced by Sam Raimi. And then came the recent news that Diablo Cody would be writing the script and fans got even more incensed (I'm not particular fan of her work either but you can't argue her fondness for the material or the genre and I'll respect that passion). But long time EVIL DEAD fans may have something to look forward to: the return of Bruce Campbell.

Spanish website El Pais (via Badass Digest) spoke to Campbell himself who seemingly spilled some beans. They're article says that the basic story will stay the same but with new characters. "The only recognizable face is part of Bruce Campbell, but will be in a cameo towards the end of the film," says the Google Translate-d interview.

I'm not sure if Campbell would be playing Ash or simply just a wink-y nod to Campbell's legacy with the film. It also seems weird that Campbell would ruin a surprise cameo at the end of the film but maybe that's part of the plan to convince angry fans the remake isn't all that bad. What do you think? Should Ash return and how could he work into the story?

I only saw The Evil Dead like a year ago and I thought it was okay but nothing worth all this love.
But then again this must be like the Star Wars thing. The die hard fans grew up watching these movies and that's why they love 'em so much, not because they're actually great movies.
Oh and seeing as how you mooks are all painfully predictable, I already got the thumbs down started by 1, so don't be shy guys.

I have always thought a remake was a bad idea, when what could be done is a legit sequel starring the chin himself. Just pick up after the alternate ending to Army of Darkness. Ash, has been fighting deadites for years, and finally thinks he has figured out a way to get back home. It's so simple, I don't understand why they can't do it. There is only 1 Ash, and his name is Bruce Campbell. Hail to the King Baby! Hail to the King!

At the end the new hero gets thrust into the future timeline where Old Man Ash is waiting and they fight tomorrows deadites together. It follows the "real" ending to Army of Darkness (which I still call MedEVIL Dead) and they can run from there. Not a remake, just a new chapter.

Stop this endless delay already

Raimi, stop pissing around and do what you promised to do 20 years ago. Make EVIL DEAD 4. If a new generation want to see Evil Dead, they're available for rent or for purchase.

Yeah, if Bruce Campbell shows up as Ash at the end to save the day then I'll probably see it just for that. I probably still won't like the movie but I'll see it just for Ash.

Everytime I hear something new about this, it manages to sound even worse than before. How do they do it?

I would have been ok with this if it was gonna be a remake a la Evil Dead 2 was to 1, but without Bruce in the lead screw it.

Bruce can do a tv movie based off his character on that shitty USA Television show Burn Notice but he won't return to the role that made him who he is.

This needs to stop. Now. Find more talented people to remake it if you won't. To quote Bill Hader, "I'm horrified..."

I'd be okay with...

a part remake/weird time travel story where the older Ash is still stuck in medieval times. You can't replace Bruce. You just can't.

I don't see why people are complaining-aside from this being a remake rather than a full sequel. First people were mad that it seemed The Chin was not going to act in the movie, as it was a remake, and now that he is definitely getting a cameo (as well as producing) people are offended by this. Who knows, if Bruce comes back as Future Ash, that would be the greatest thing this movie could offer, but at least this is being properly made and endorsed by the original creative team. Aside from the fact that this is a remake, we're really getting pampered here as fans, and unless it is stated that "Bruce is in the movie for five minutes, and dies," then I see no reason not to be cautiously optimistic. Trust me, I hate remakes as much as the rest of us, and would love an Evil Dead 4 just as well, we've seen a lot more offensive remakes by Corporate Hollywood that have had nothing to do with the original cast/crew. I'm just happy Sam, Bruce, and Rob are back on board again.

that's exactly right, we're complaining cause it's a remake and not a sequel - there is not other reason.

MAYBE

I mean hell yeah this is horrible BUT I might be interested in this IF at the end he comes in as Ash, from the future or something, and then leads to the end of the movie WHICH hints that the sequel will be about and LED by Bruce Campbell himself, as Ash. That's the only way this can turn out well.

I'm sorry, but I stopped reading the article at "Diablo Cody would be writing the script". While I think Juno had a lot of charm, it was mostly because of the directing and the acting. The horrible dialogues were the worst part of the movie for me. And Jennifer's Body, that's just plain awful...

Leave it be Campbell

If he puts his face in this film, even for a tiny cameo, he'd only be adding insult to injury. Don't advertise your affiliation with this project any further. Let it be its own entity, the more it ties into our real Evil Dead the more difficult it will be to scrape it from memory. Plus then we'd be subjected to all the kids pointing and saying "Hey look, it's that guy from those really old movies." Followed by me smacking them upside the dome.

"Should Ash return?"

...it wouldn't be "The Evil Dead" without him.

I'm telling you, he's showing up at the end as old Ash.

Personally what I would like is if Old Ash is zapped back to the events of Evil Dead 1, then young Ash dies.

HUGE Dead fan, but here's a thought...

Start the movie after Ash's death, were the deadites are running wild destroying S-Marts everywhere. Then someone uses the necronomicon to bring Ash's spirit back from the grave "ah-la the Evil Dead force" to posses our budding new franchise hero to turn him into the next generation of badassed, chainsaw armed, boomstick wielding, non-primitive, Deadite slayer. Maybe throw some Bruce cameo's into some talking into the mirror scenes and there you have it. Franchise rebooted. Fans not violently

A cameo at the end of the movie where he might not even be Ash? Sounds pointless either way, but so does everything else about an Evil Dead remake.
