Will Casper the friendly ghost come back to the big screen?

Dec. 30, 2010by: Niki Stephens

I don't know about you men folk, but CASPER was a big deal for us pre-teen females in 1995. The words, "Can I keep you?" automatically made our hearts flutter. At 26, I can tell you it still works.

How could you not like CASPER? It had Christina Ricci before she was mega skinny, Bill Pullman getting drunk with ghost uncles, and Dan Aykroyd made a cameo as Dr. Ray Stantz. Not to mention, Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle were also in the film. Ever since '95, CASPER hasn't been doing so well. The friendly ghost has mainly spend time on the small screen. The last thing I saw him in was CASPER SCARE SCHOOL on Cartoon Network.

Now it looks like Classic Media, who own the rights to CASPER, are talking to Amblin Entertainment and Universal about doing a new live-action film. The company wants to bring Casper back to the big-screen in all his CG glory amongst the fleshies. Last year the little ghost was re-vamped in the comic world with the series, Casper and the Spectrals. Perhaps it will have something to do with that. Right now though, it's just all talk.

Classic Media owns the rights to another Harvey Comics character, Little Dot. It's possible that she will get the big-screen treatment but Casper comes first.

Extra Tidbit: Favorite Devon Sawa moment from SLC PUNK. (It starts at 2:25 if you want to skip ahead)

WOOO!

I loved the Casper movie when I was a kid, I don't remember the 2nd one (something tells me that's a blessing). I wouldnt mind casper coming back but sadly I don't think he will appeal to the younger generation today. what am I talking about, if they like talking cars they will like this..may I recommend Summer Glau as the female protagonist? (idk why her and ricci from back then just look similar to me)

Loved "Casper" when I was a kid. The Akroyd cameo was quite funny.

I'd rather see a sequel with Casper and Ricci's and Pullman's characters again. Not some reboot.

Though corny at times, Casper is an amazing movie. It is flashy and entertaining, yet surprisingly dark and emotional.

The scene where Casper says something about how he can't remember what life was like because 'when you're dead, your life doesn't matter anymore' is a pretty frank and provocative concept for a movie aimed at small children.

Chances are, any reboot wouldn't be as daring.

Hmmm...

I dont' know about you fellas, but if I ever said the line "Can I keep you," as a pick up, I'd be either 1. Labeled a creep, or 2. Labeled a creep.

I always thought the line, "Kiss Me" was sufficient.

But that's just me!

The Ghost of Richie Rich

I remember being at Universal Studios Orlando where they had a walk through of a few set pieces, I was so hyped at the time I can't wait to see what they do with it.

Stay away from Casper Meets Wendy.

They should release it!

And call it Ghostbusters 3 and then just make the damn movie already ...

But I guess I wouldn't mind seeing the friendly ghost on the big screen again.

Casper will probably need to be edge-ified for today's generation. I suggest they contract Rob Zombie for scripting duties, ASAP. Rob's down wit' da kids, he knows all the modern swear words. Plus, he has experience at reimaginationing classic characters; he Poochie'd Michael Myers for today's young 'uns.

Casper Is Great...

I loved Casper and his co-horts from Harvey Comics back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was raised on 'em along w/the typical superhero types.

Casper needs a shot and also needs to be done correctly...live action...maybe. I'm up for suggestions though.

I took my kids to see this in the theater when I was stationed in Japan and I loved it, still do. Anything Casper done after this was HORRIBLE. A re-boot could be good if they don't get stupid with it. I'd like to see a Spooky the Tuff Little Ghost get the treatment. Nuff said.

I thought the first live action Casper was super good, and need not a sequel or remake. BUT...if they want to make a sequel, I saw just go straight from the first and forget all of the other crap that came after it...

HaHa

I can picture it now...Tim Burton directing and Johnny Depp voicing Casper. Which I would never actually go see by the way.
