Will Channing Tatum be a Man from U.N.C.L.E.?

11.14.2011

The search is still on for two male leads to star in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.. Everyone has been named from George Clooney to Alexander Skarsgard to Bradley Cooper but no one has jumped on board.

Now it seems that Channing Tatum is being eyed for one of the leads in the film. I would presume it's the Napoleon Solo role that Clooney was supposed to take on. Deadline does not specify which, however they do mention that Steven Soderbergh has been looking for someone to replace Clooney since he moved on due to an upcoming surgery.

Soderbergh has been working with Tatum and his BFF Alex Pettyfer on MAGIC MIKE. This makes me wonder if Soderbergh will ask Pettyfer to take on the other role of Illya Kuryakin if Tatum accepts. Maybe they can be the new power duo! I really hope not.

I bet Tatum will take it unless he has something else particularly juicy lined up.

The funny thing is that Kuryakin is supposed to be a Soviet agent. But, because he was played by a British, people are assuming the part SHOULD be played by an English actor again... Why not a Russian one, for a (logical) change ?
Has of Tatum, I too have a Walhberg feeling about him: he MIGHT prove us he CAN act with the right script, director or if we give him time to improve his acting...

We can forgive the series for using a British actor because the politics of that era. I guess of that Hollywood developed a phobia of Soviets which apparently continues to this day becasue Russsians are only OK if they are bad guys. But then again, nobody has a problem with Christian Bale playing an American Psycho, a US army vet in Harsh Times and a little known role as Batman.
As for Tatum he just needs to mature or he'll become a B-list DTV superstar.

whoa deja vu!

Karl Urban will be well suited for Solo and for Kuryakin, Paul Bettany.
Check this out there's even a mock fan teaser poster which I totally agree with

I think Soderbergh is taking a curious path. Starting with famous, accomplished actors. Then trying out amateur actors. Then trying out pornstars and now his biggest challenge, the ridiculously untalented (Pettyfer and Tatum).
An interesting challenge.

Is Soberburgh even familiar with the show?

Only if this thing is going the way of the big screen Charlie’s Angels.
I’m seriously starting to question if Soderbergh’s even seen an episode of UNCLE.
Robert Vaughn’s Solo worked because no matter how cheesy the storylines were he played it for real, a bit like Adam West’s Batman or (blasphemy) even Shatner.
The role needs someone super smooth. Jon Hamm would be perfect, or Fassbender. Put Channing Tatum in Robocop, then we only have to look at him for the first half an hour.

Mark Walhberg used to be a tool, but I came to like him as an actor. I hated "The Rock" and wrestling in general, but that changed after I saw The Run Down. There's hope for Tatum. He's got nowhere to go, but up.

You know, it's a weird situation with this guy. He's got the Wahlberg thing going on where he seems to just be playing himself in everything. Yet....I still have faith in Tatum. After seeing Haywire I have even more faith. Go Tatum!

I am a fan of Tatum and think he is a good actor when he wants to be, but I'd rather see Bradley Cooper, Jon Hamm, or Matt Bomer take on a role like this.

No, No, No...

Just look at the picture; he looks like a bouncer, not Napoleon Solo. You need a very classically handsome man for Solo, perhaps Matt Bomer, Mark Valley or someone with a similar look.

I will say this, with Tatum getting parts in interesting projects, he could actually develop a range enough to shut up the naysayers.

Not loving the idea of him in this, but I maintain the man does have talent. But I understand why people hate him, too.
