Will Dwayne Johnson's Fast and Furious character be getting his own spinoff?

Mar. 21, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be having one hell of a prolific year in 2013, with SNITCH, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, PAIN AND GAIN, FAST AND FURIOUS 6, and EMPIRE STATE in the bag. So, pretty much if you hate Johnson, which is kind of impossible, then you are going to have a shitty year at the movies. He's everywhere. Now, the actor is saying that there is discussion about spinning off his FAST AND FURIOUS character, Luke Hobbs, into his own feature.

Johnson's inclusion in FAST FIVE was one of the signature reasons that the film rocked as much as it did, so it was a no brainer that he needed to be involved in the next one...and the next one...and the next one. He told Empire that spinning off Hobbs was "the goal," explaining:

[We could see the Hobbs movie] possibly after this one, after the next one. Possibly. Im not quite too sure, I know thats the goal and we continue to build that character and have him take shape. But yes, I cant wait.

I think it's a smart move. Johnson has struggled to find a franchise and he really seemed to click with Hobbs in FAST FIVE, so this may well be the opportunity to finally solidify his own franchise character, much like his fellow actions stars have. He's more than earned it and seems to be making all the right plays after a few detours into kiddie fare. He's suffered enough.

Johnson's Hobbs will next be seen in FAST AND FURIOUS 6, along with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Luke Evans, Gina Carano, Ludacris, Elsa Pataky, Sung Kang, and Tyrese Gibson, on May 24, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: if they ever remake Arnold's classic Commando, there's only one guy who could pull it off. And his name rhymes with The Rock. Okay, it IS The Rock.

Hell yes

If there's one character from the modern action franchises that deserves a spin-off it is definitely Hobbs. He was the best part of Fast Five, a true badass with no nonsense attitude and a highly unique on-screen presence. As for the question whom he would face... C'mon, in a spin-off you could go anywhere with that character, since you would essentially free him from the chains of the car-themed franchise and yet it would make sense financially to use this brand. I say go for it.

Doesn't he have the "JOURNEY" franchise already (granted it's family friendly, but a franchise nonetheless!)?
And I doubt it will ever happen: it's the James Bond syndrome ! EACH TIME a character in James Bond kicks ass, they say it will have it's own franchise, or just like the Willem Dafoe character in the third Jack Ryan film...
I'd like it to happen, but I doubt it...

No. Keep the character in The Fast and the Furious series. If it's outside of the series, who else is Hobb going to hunt? The Expendables? Should The Rock be in The Expendables, make him a new character.

Bring It!

Anything good Dwayne gets, Dwayne deserves. I've been a fan of The Rock since 1999, way before his acting career (just realized I sound like a shower-evading hipster), and we've all seen how he struggled to make it big in Hollywood. He left the ring, where he is considered the best of the best, and ventured into a land where he was an absolute nobody. He clawed his way up. He made it. If a spinoff will do his career good, then he should do it. Good for you, Rocky.

What would they call it?

I'd call it "Muscles With A Badge" and be done with it. Like, seriously- what would you title a series spin-off just starring Hobbs? Why not just keep the FF franchise going and re-tool it to focus on Johnson, rather than an actual spin-off?

OMG nooooooo

"Johnson's inclusion in FAST FIVE was one of the signature reasons that the film rocked as much as it did..."
OK where to start.... F5 was a decent action flick, nothing more than that. The reason why most people (not me) loves it is because its an improvement in the series. Of course most F&F movies are crap! The reason why we all hate DIE HARD 5 is because is the worst DIE HARD... but in terms of quality F5 and DH5 are in the same level. Dumb action flicks with the good guys doing

Dumb action flicks with the good guys doing superhero stunts, no brain, no serious action, just money makers for the studios. The Rocks character is just a rude cop and any actor with some muscles can play that character. The Rock is TOTALLY overated, and F&F is the most similar thing to "TWILIGHT FOR GUYS". Now give me a lot of negative points, but I want to see FAST 5 in the "unpopular opinion" soon!

Of course!

This is kinda a no bainer that the character should have a spin-off. After the last one a lot of people feel that the character should have his own franchise. Surprised it hasn't happend yet

Very Interesting

This could go either way. The Hobbs character in Fast and Furious was definitely one of the smarter moves Fast 5 made as it definitely created both awesome action sequences but also some very cool plot development for the film. I'd like to see how they flesh out the character more in at least Fast 6 (and possibly Fast 7 as they allude to be doing) before saying for sure that this is a good idea.
But as far as giving Dwayne Johnson (I'm sorry, I refuse to call him The Rock anymore since he's

But as far as giving Dwayne Johnson (I'm sorry, I refuse to call him The Rock anymore since he's far surpassed that character with his acting) his own franchise, why not make him the focal point of the GI Joe franchise moving forward. Depending on how well GI Joe: Retaliation does, I can see them making many more movies for that franchise and it gives Johnson a franchise to bank his name on. It's just another option to think about rather than banking on a spinoff of a character added to the Fast and Furious franchise after 5 movies, especially since spinoffs have not worked out so well in the past (ahem, Elektra, ahem).
