Will Ferrell to star in Netflix pic based on The Eurovision Song Contest

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Netflix has announced that they have a song in their heart for comedian Will Ferrell, as the streaming giant has just landed a deal for the SNL alum to star in EUROVISION, a comedy film based on the uber-popular and long running international TV music competition The Eurovision Song Contest. In addition to starring in the pic, Ferrell will also co-write the script with Andrew Steele. The Eurovision phenomenon began in Switzerland in 1956, when seven West European nations boogied down for the cameras. Most recently 43 countries competed for the top prize, with Lisbon by Netta emerging victorious with a performance of the song Toy. In the past, pop sensations the likes of ABBA (1974 victors for Sweden) and Céline Dion (1988 winner on behalf of Switzerland) were proclaimed the winners of the contest. As it would happen, both artists have gone on to become pillars of the music community, after their wins at The Eurovision Song Contest.

Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum will produce by way of Gary Sanchez Productions, and Adam McKay will serve as the project's executive producer. The EUROVISION project is yet another attempt by Netflix to snag an A-list star to lead an original comedy presentation in the face of comedies not living up to expectations at the box office. Could Netflix and services like it become the new home of comedic endeavors? Has the tone of comedy changed so drastically over the past several years that moviegoers simply aren't interested in the next "raunch and circumstance" feature? Are rising ticket prices getting in the way of a few good laughs? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
