Will guys go see The Hunger Games?

Mar. 2, 2012by:

With record-setting pre-sold tickets, THE HUNGER GAMES is tracking to have a $70 Million+ opening. But will a film with such a strong female fan base attract guys who aren't just going to take their girlfriends on opening weekend?

Today's new clip, and a recent 60 second spot have yet to focus on the real action of the film, which would surely attract the male audience. Can we please see an arrow shoot something other than an apple? We're sick of television ads that focus more on the fashion that the characters are wearing than the bloody, fight-to-the-death-with-bare-hands violence!

While the book itself is never too gory (or at least anything that can't be done within a PG-13 rating), it does have more to offer the average male viewer than the trailers would have us believe. Those who have read the book series know that the adventure and action elements of the story involve several elaborate booby-traps that are hidden within the forest arena from the film. This causes more than a fair amount of bloody goodness!

The film has also been compared the TWILIGHT series, which is a put-off to young dudes who don't wanna see anything sparkle in the sunlight. While there is a romantic subplot within the first book, many film-goers who are on the fence should know that it acts as more of a plot device than a groan-inducing, mope-fest that you would expect from Kristen Stewart.

Based on the source material alone, the film could prove to be a fun, action-drama within a sci-fi setting that sets the stage for a great movie series. And perhaps the producers are just saving the best bits of the film, knowing that good word-of-mouth will bring guys into the theaters for the second weekend.

I'm seeing a lot of fashion here, but not a lot of arrow impalement.

If the marketing for the film isn't doing anything for you guys. Just remember how hot Jennifer Lawrence is in this clip from a 2010 Esquire fashion shoot.

I'll be seeing it, as long as the reviews are decent. If they mostly stick to the books, there's a lot of potential.

Not real interested...

...seems to be chick-oriented. Lots of "tweens" (boys and girls) reading this, but I don't usually enjoy their books either.

It is much more like Harry Potter in the sense that it appeals to all ages and sexes. Unlike Twilight, which is just 10 - 17 year old girls and very lonely old women.

I brought this up elsewhere. Having skipped out on just about every trailer, clip & whatnot, I'm wondering how much they've shown of Woody H. His casting was what got me behind the movie more than anything. He could work wonders w/ Hamish . . .

My sister read the books and seems to think I'll like it, and she knows me pretty well--so I'm guessing the Twilight comparisons are more about reeling in a fanbase than they are about accuracy. So here's one guy who's gonna see it.

My boyfriend, currently reading the book, probably makes two. Plus I have several guy friends who enjoyed the books and are going to see it. I'm thinking this movie is going to do pretty well!

Meh

I never even heard of this until I started seeing stories on JoBlo. Then the books started blowing up all over, and the Twilight vibe really started setting in which killed any interest for me to read the books, even though I am an avid reader.

Then I saw the trailers and they did nothing for me. My main question is why are they fighting? Obviously there is no real reason, no real need other than they want to see people die..so why fight?

I doubt I will even watch this after it is

Ever seen or read Battle Royale? From what I've heard, the reason for fighting is pretty similar in both stories.

The first two books are great, so I'll definitely go see the movies for those. However, the last book is kind of terrible, so I may be skipping that movie when it comes out in a few years. Either way, it's a good series, and I can't wait for the first movie to come out in a few weeks.

I...

I am sick and tired of these Twilight comparisons. The only reason these comparisons exist is because they're both based on books, both are extremely popular, and the Hunger Games has a VERY minimal sub plot about our lead heroine having mxied feelings for two guys. There hasn't been a film adaptation getting this much buzz since Twilight.

I will see it. It's a fantastic, well written book. Original? Not really. But good nonetheless. If you like Battle Royale and that classic Arnie

Love the comparisons

To Battle Royal. So funny. Everyone who said they've seen Battle Royal should go back and watch it again as the only similarities that really exist is that these are teenagers pitted against each other in a death match. Thats it. There are so many differences between tjhe two. By these ppl's logic they have no need to watch another sci fi flick cause they've seen Star Wars.

Sure she got an Oscar nom, but then you look at X-Men First Class and she was awful.

Even if this movie is the worst piece of crap, which I doubt it would be, it's already 100x better than any Twilight film. For starters, Jennifer Lawrence can act (She has been nominated for an OSCAR), she's so much hotter than Kirsten Stewart and the story is much better than Vampires that glitter and whiny werewolves. In fact, there should be no comparison with Twlight, except that they are now both own by Lionsgate.

I found the book quite enjoyable, so I will be there. I anticipate the film will be enjoyable, but I do agree, the marketing hasn't done much for males. That said, the book is fairly gender neutral, and like so many other teen novel series, it has transcended age to older people. Will more males see this? Hard to say, but I do expect a higher audience of males for this than something like Twilight. If the movie's actually good, all the better.

No. the only book i'm reading is the Hobbit..which is remarkable, if you haven't read it

I've read the first book and it's a real

page-turner so, if the movie is faithful to the book, then I'm definitely there.

Any comparisons to Twilight are completely off-base. First off, Suzanne Collins can write. Second, Katniss is a real survivor who does end up using those archery skills in the field. They're not going full-on gore because of the PG-13 rating but the action scenes in the book are plenty gripping.

The comparison to Twilight is ratarded. Looks nothing like it. The story sounds cool and it has a good lead actress. I'm seeing it with my girlfriend but I'm not being dragged. I actually want to see it. I'm also sure its not like Battle Royale. I think there will be more of a story to this that Battle Royale.

I really felt like...

this was a gender neutral film. It seemed more like something for the tweens. Like a soft "running man" or something along those lines. I wasnt blown away by the trailer for the hunger games (nor for John Carter either) and just felt 'meh' about it. But now I finally figured out why my gf keeps asking me when this movie coming out. Which is odd because she doesnt keep track of movies half as much as I do. Clever marketing bastards.

The studio really shot themselves in the foot with the marketing of this if they're really trying to attract young males.

Unarguably the biggest selling point for a male would be the action that takes place during the game (of which there has been none shown sans a few seconds of people running during the beginning and then a tree falling in the forest). Wow. Really great way to showcase your film's action. I mean, is there even a Game in the movie? You wouldn't be able to tell from any

I won't ruin the ending for people who haven't read The Hunger Games but go watch Battle Royale, it virtually has the same ending.

I am insulted that people compare this to Twilight

As we speak I am reading the 1st book and I am pretty damn hooked. I don't think it is fair to compare this book to Twilight because for one, Katniss is a damn survivor. She is independent, doesn't like to feel she needs people, and can (pardon my french) fucking kill. I had many issues with Twilight but my biggest issue with it was with Kirsten Stewarts character. she was completely weak in every way imaginable. Romance wise, (tiny spoiler i guess) I mean yeah you can sense a little romantic

Anyway, the way the book is coming along now, I will definitly see it

I just can't get behind it.

Admittedly I have not read the books so I'm about as far from in the know on this as I can be, but it just comes across like an Americanized version of Battle Royal, which was excellent. And because of this it just seems weak to me. It would be like if I made a film about a guy stuck in a computer world while trying to save mankind from machines and called it "The Binary Code" and then got mega popular for it... and for that reason, I can't get behind it. (P.S. I get it... I need to read the
