Will Hugh Jackman be back as Logan for The Wolverine sequel and X-Men: Apocalypse?

Dec. 6, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

The X-MEN: APOCALYPSE announcement yesterday was very exciting, as was last month's news about a sequel to THE WOLVERINE. But will Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine in these films? Jackman talked to Vanity Fair the other day, and he says he isn't sure if he'll do another film.

"I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie. I am really proud of this movie and I am excited to develop something with Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride. That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be [for me to star in it] and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it."

The actor also says there isn't a script for the sequel yet, and it could be some time before another solo Wolverine film hits theaters.

"No there is not but Jim Mangold and I were literally on the phone last night talking about ideas but there is no script and no writer yet so it’s a way off."

Hugh Jackman's interview was done before the X-Men news dropped yesterday, but I think it's safe to assume that if he's not sure about a sequel to THE WOLVERINE, then he's probably also hasn't made a decision on appearing in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE either. The film is scheduled to come out in 2016, so if there is going to be another Wolverine film, it won't be released until sometime after that. Would Fox just cast someone else as Logan if Hugh Jackman decides not to come back for THE WOLVERINE sequel and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, or will the character not appear in the next X-Men film? Hugh Jackman will have to hang up his Wolverine claws someday, but I really hope he gets to do at least one more Wolverine film before he does.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST could be the last time we see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and it will be released on May 23rd, 2014.

Not yet Hugh.

I'm pretty sure these rumors are started by Jackman's people as a way to ensure he makes bazillions for the next few movies. Jackman has been quoted several times saying he would play the part as long as people wanted to see the films. Besides, you can't recast the role it now that Singer has announced Apocalypse as a direct continuation of Days of Future Past.

I say let him "retire"

pass the reins, but then come back for an "Old Man Logan" swan song. That way he can go do some other projects. He's a great actor, and for his own sake, I hate to see him simply just take these roles for continued bankrolls and deprive himself (and audiences) of other roles and projects he'd like to do.

Love it if Hugh stays on for a long time. When the role becomes too much physically at his age, all he needs to do is stop going shirtless so much. Logan in uniform or a leather jacket kicking ass is still good for me. Sorry ladies! haha

I wonder how they/he will mend the claws.

Oh, please. He'll be back. Didn't Hugh once say he'd play Wolverine until the day he dies? No way is he letting another dude don the claws.

I love Logan as Wolverine...but lets face it, he bigs up each and every movie he's in as the Wolverine...and is always saying something like... wait and see...you fans are going to get the real Wolverine in the next instalment ...honestly, go back and check out the marketing for all his turns as Logan since Last Stand...possible X2...I remember a quote being made about getting to see the wolverine berserker rage but that might not have been made by Jackman. I think he's been a great Wolverine

I think he's been a great Wolverine and I hope he gives us a few more but I'm not blind to the faults of the movies he's been in. Each turn has delivered at some point...something quite brilliant - you could actually take all those bits out...put them together...and you'll get a Wolverine movie that's top class from start to finish.

I hope so

I have to think he will be, he loves the role, and really at this point no one else can or should play him until a reboot, these movies have had a TON wrong with them, but Huge has been dead on as Logan from day 1

Money talks

Jackman will go from say he doesn't know if he wants to return unless there's a good story aka unless my paycheck is big enough. Downey Jr. and Depp use the same methods and yet the latter still makes crap.

Typical contract negotiations.

This always happens with franchise stars. They make a public statement that basically says "I don't have to be in the next film if I don't want to". This is to help give them leverage over studios for negotiating a new contract. It worked really well for Robert Downey Jr.

I don't care what they do with Wolverine, as long as Apoclypse says this

"I am the rocks of the eternal shore... crash against me and be BROKEN!"

"I cannot be touched. I cannot be harmed. Watch me and tremble... for I bring the purity of oblivion to your world."

"I am as far beyond them as they are beyond YOU!!! I am the next step in human, mutant evolution. I am Apocalypse I am Eternal!"

Throw in some Shi'ar Empire, and I could die a happy man. But Rogue defiantly needs to start flying and get super strong so she can fuck Apocalypse up.

My guess is that Jackman will definitely be back for the next Wolverine film with Mangold directing. Fox will pay out the ass to ensure that Jackman is back for that movie since he's such an important and integral part of the Wolverine franchise. X-Men: Apocalypse will probably not have Hugh involved though. Fox doesn't really need him, and the X-Men cast is already very full as it is. Either way, I'm excited about both of these upcoming movies because Fox-Marvel has been on an awesome roll

Pretty much every X-Men movie (with the exception of First Class) has really been a Wolverine movie. I liked The Wolverine but do we really need a seventh and eighth Wolverine movie? What's left to say about the character? I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when it turned out they were retconning Kitty Pride's storyline in DOFP so the movie could, again, drag Wolverine along as the main character.

There are tons of characters in the X-Men universe, it's time we got to see some

The physicality of the role is extremely taxing.

I think he could play Wolverine well into his 50s (if he keeps the shirt on), but the problem is that it's going to increasingly typecast and restrict him from other roles. If you watch Prisoners, you'll notice he wears extremely baggy clothing throughout the film in an effort to conceal his superhuman physique. As he gets older he's not going to want to become what Sylvester Stallone transformed into: a talented actor who got typecast for his muscles and now, sadly, is nearly 70 years old

Jackman will eventually want to take more time off between films (probably already does, judging from his comments here!) but the studios aren't going to be willing to wait. So I'd say after the next film, Apocalpyse, I wouldn't be surprised if he bids farewell.

He's done well, but should move on.

I do love Jackman as Wolverine and with DOFP will hopefully finally get to see him properly in the X Men sequel we've been waiting for since X2, but he is getting old. If you go back and watch X men 1, he has clearly aged alot, and for a character that supposedly never ages, isn't ideal. Depending on what is planned for X Men: Apocolypse, it's probably a good time for him to go out on a high with DOFP and hang up the claws.

bone claws. Wolverine gets transported to his 1970's body in DoFP before the Weapon X program.

It's great to see the excitement between Mangold and Jackman, phoning one another and bounce ideas back and forth. Ever since X-Men 3 ended, Jackman has always sounded like he'll just go film by film and if he likes the script, he's definitely in. So for him to do another two of three films wouldn't be out of the question. Hugh loves playing the character and the stories surrounding him, I think if you deliver a solid script, he'll keep the claws on.

Only if they have to.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jackman as Wolverine, but I thought early on that DOFP would be an easy way to recast the present day X-Men and continue the story line. I don't think James Marsden or Famke Janssen want to come back as Cyclops and Jean respectively and with a time travel movie you can almost get away with recasting and blaming the different appearances on modifying the timeline. I liked most of the cast in the originals but some of them are getting older, maybe too old to continue

I liked most of the cast in the originals but some of them are getting older, maybe too old to continue into the unforeseeable future. If they have to (I wish I could emphasis "have to" more) recast Wolverine or the others then DOFP could be a way to get younger actors in the iconic roles and move forward. Oh and before you guys attack me I don't mean teenagers younger; just not late forties.

After playing Wolverine seven times already brilliantly, Jackman deserves to hang up his claws whenever he wants to after being dedicated time after time and also putting his body through so much pain and discipline.

I know that one day he'll have to stop playing the character, but I do hope that he keep's playing him for a couple of more years and into X-Men: Apacolypse since that would be argurably the biggest X-Men film to date and wouldn't feel right without such an iconic character

I could live without another Wolverine film if that meant we could see him in again in X-Men: Apacolypse.
