Update: Will Iron Man be in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie?

11.09.2012by:

UPDATE: Before I started this story, I left a message on director James Gunn's facebook wall asking if there was any truth to this because I hate when people say "inside source". Plus, Gunn is a completely honest guy who calls out bullshit when he sees/hears it. I guess a ton of people were asking the same because about 30 minutes ago, he posted this, "When fan sites have a slow news day, I guess they just make shit up. Honestly - almost all of the "news" about my upcoming projects has been utterly and completely false. And I really mean "all." I love this man.

For those who aren't too familiar with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (and there will be many), what can you do in order to draw a few strays to see the film? Add Iron Man.

Rumor has it that Marvel wants Robert Downey Jr. to reprise his role as Iron Man for the film. It also depends on if RDJ signs a new contract with Marvel since his ends after IRON MAN 3. This all according to ComicBookMovie.com's inside source. So for now we must proceed with caution.

Much of this stems from the new cover of the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY comic that was shown during NYC Comic Con. CBM continued with additional details:

In addition to the claim from our source, there has been some recent foreshadowing that it will indeed be Tony Stark’s Iron Man joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. The Avengers Assemble comic book was specifically launched to feature a team of Avengers, which would be familiar with new fans arising from the movie. In the Avengers Assemble #8 comic book, Tony Stark is invited to join the Guardians of the Galaxy in their outer space adventures.

Stark says, “I envy the hell out you guys. Uncharted worlds. Undiscovered sciences. Green ladies.” Starlord responds, “You should come with us. You really should.” Stark smiles and says, “I do owe myself a vacation.” The story ends with a “To be continued in Guardians of the Galaxy in February 2013.”

There's also a Twitter account from Roger Wardell, a guy who seems to have a lot of inside Marvel news. Last month, he offered this up:

Not sure if the two are connected, but CBM seems to think they might be.

I feel like this movie only exists to as a lead in to Avengers 2 (and sell a less popular comic series) so it makes a lot of sense that they'd want Iron Man in it. Downey Jr. is the star of this series, and it would give this less popular title some name recognition. I knew some people who didn't bother seeing Thor or Captain America before Avengers, so its possible some people would skip this film since most people never heard of GOTG before. I don't know anything about GOTG so I don't know if

Sorry to tell you, they don't make movies to sell comic books......just not lucrative enough bud.

All good points, but I think Marvel is moving in a direction in Phase 2, to make the public a little more aware of their more obscure properties; which in a sense is brilliant marketing, because it really comes down to the fan base of their books as a whole. I'm thinking Phase 2 will throw the average moviegoer off a little, and Phase 3 may not even interest the general movie audience with the obscure titles it may reach out towards. However, fans of the company's books, will continue to

This is of course, only speculation....

Gotta milk the leading man

I understand the need for marvel to make sure the movie brings in fans but I don't know if I'd want iron man there just to help put asses in seats. Make the movie you guys wanna make, so far phase one was great, I trust phase 2 will be much better.

I can see this happening, and Iron Man would fit with the Guardians universe as a side story. I just hope it doesn't take away from, or overpower the main Guardians story to be told.

Also, I would figure Downey Jr. would most likely be signing on to a new contract with Marvel, just based on Avengers 2 alone, so I could see him making an appearance in The Guardians movie.

I just hope Guardians Of The Galaxy brings in other cosmic entities (Thanos is pretty much a given) like Adam Warlock &

I want me some Inhumans damnit! I want to see Black Bolt in all of his amazeballs awesomeness on the big screen!

Putting Ironman in every Marvel movie is a good move, for the parents unfamiliar with the comics and expect the fan favorite to show up a lot.

Two thoughts

I did not read the 1990s Guardians of the Galaxy series. However, I know that Iron Man appeared in that series in the form of the Stark. Apparently, the Stark were a cult connected to Iron Man, and they encountered the Guardians in the 1990s series set in the far future. Anyway, Iron Man and the Guardians have been connected before.
Also, people mention that Iron Man is likely to appear in Avengers 2. That Iron Man might be Downey. He has said that he wishes to play the Tony Stark character

However, the Avengers 2 Iron Man could also be James Rhodey. Rhodey has taken over for Tony Stark before. If Marvel Studios cannot keep Downey on, the studio does have a back-up Golden Avenger already established in the franchise.

IRON MAN OR TONY STARK

This could either mean that IM could be part of the team, or make a cameo (much like in Incredible Hulk) as Stark...

I would literally Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man multiple times a year if I could. The man has more charisma than I thought humanly possible.

Schwarma it

I hated the tid-bit in hulk with Downey, It was forced. If you want Downey to keep cameoing it (also applies to Hugh Jackman) keep it organic. Off-beat, day-in-the-life. I would love to have Stark teaching Rocket Poker. Rocket arguing with Jarvis. Rocket and Stark boozing. Do you sense a theme? Avengers vs Guardians Paint ball, hulk and Gru get bowling ball size paint balls.

I really just wish this existed on its own.

I don't think this really needs to intertwine with the Avengers universe. Alas, no one cares what I think.
