Will it be Maverick, Ethan Hunt, or Jack Reacher in Tom Cruise's franchise future?

04.26.2012

Speaking to Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman, THR brought out a lot of interesting tidbits about Paramount's upcoming slate of films, including three of them with Tom Cruise.  There's been ruminations of a TOP GUN sequel for years, but just recently the project has gained altitude with both Cruise and original director, Tony Scott, showing serious interest in the project.

With the recent smash hit MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL, another entry in that franchise is all but guaranteed.  However, Cruise is finishing up the adaptation of Lee Child's ONE SHOT with director Christopher McQuarrie (WAY OF THE GUN, VALKYRIE) and has a laundry list of projects after that.

Cruise on the set of One Shot.

When asked what the plans were for the two franchises, Goodman said:

"We'll likely make a TOP GUN sequel with Tom Cruise first. Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We've hired Peter Craig (THE TOWN) to write the script."

The Top Gun team reunites: Bruckheimer, Cruise, McGillis, and Scott

Goodman also confirmed the schedule switch with Cruise's ONE SHOT with Brad Pitt's WORLD WAR Z:

"It is an action-adventure movie with a lot of extreme ideas -- i.e., a world war with zombies -- so it felt more like a summer tentpole. One Shot, starring Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher, seemed like a great Christmas opportunity, so we moved that up. We see One Shot, based on Lee Child's novels, as a potential franchise."

Cruise may have had a lag in the past few years, but it seems like he's really picking up steam in the next evolution of his career, scooping up franchises left and right, as well as jumping into the sci-fi genre with OBLIVION for director Joseph Kosinski (TRON LEGACY), as well as Doug Liman's (MR. AND MRS. SMITH) ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

I'm a Tom Cruise fan, and, like Mel Gibson, I don't give a shit what he does in his personal life unless it's something reprehensible.  Believing in aliens and jumping on couches on a crappy talk show aren't going to make me blacklist the guys films.  He's been in some of the best films ever made, so I won't begrudge him a little crazy.  If Tony Scott does indeed reteam with Cruise for a TOP GUN 2 you can bet your Kenny Loggins CD collection I'll be there.

Cruise with the late Don Simpson, godfather of the high-concept movie.

Extra Tidbit: Vanilla Sky is one of my all-time favorite films. It's a highly underrated film, in my opinion.

not quite 100%, but intrigued.

I've read half a dozen "Reacher" novels, and TC didnt spring to mind as the face of those novels. Perhaps a Jeremy Renner would look more the part. However,MI:ghost protocol proved cruise can still do a really good action flick. The thing is, Reacher is quite tall in the novels, and muscular for his size, and cruise is,what, 5 8" ? Visually it's a big difference from the book, but he no doubt has the acting chops to pull it off. Will see what a trailer looks like before deciding.

How the hell did Top Gun go from an adrenaline fueled action-fest to a chick flick over the years? back in the day I remember hearing chick after chick saying that it was the go-to movie for girls-only sleep over...either way, a Top gun sequel would be very welcome....

always a fan of cruise no matter what, so i don't care about what religion he perfers. The man knows how to make movies & gives the fans what we want. NO actor commits to a film the way he does. SO anything he brings to the screen I will check out. On a side note, man Kelly McGillis has not aged well

I only wish he could pick projects in which he portraits a bad-guy... Collateral and Interview with a Vampire are fine examples of what the guy can do.. he's bad-ass as a villain

even though it was a comedy I would consider Les Grossman a villiain type role.

ok my list...aka why I like Tom Cruise as an actor

The Outsiders ( I bet people forgot he was in this)

Risky Business
The Color of Money (underrated)
Born on the 4th of July
The Firm
Magnolia
Minority Report
Collateral ( Severely underrated film)
War of the Worlds (until the last five minutes)
Tropic Thunder
MI, MI 3 ( I don't understand the backlash with this one esp. with the shitty second one), and MI:GP

Can't wait for One Shot.

I can't picture Top Gun 2. When talking about it, Paramount execs keep talking about drone pilots. Where is the drama in some guy in Nevada flying a remote control drone against the ancient aircraft of Iran or North Korea? At worst the drone is taken out and the pilot back in the U.S. goes and gets some coffee. And what is the equivalent of Goose dying in TG2? Does Maverick have to overcome carpal tunnel? Does he have a headache from staring at the monitor? Not seeing it.

You're too low,

I like about a handful of films starring Tom Cruise (Risky Business, Eyes Wide Shut, Magnolia, and MI:4-Ghost Protocol). That's about it really; he's just okay as an actor to me.

Theaters are long overdue for some real air action. Non of this CGI dogfights. Hopefully Tony Scott actually films planes flying and doesn't go with full CGI.

Tony Scott's films may induce seizures in viewers, but he does tend to be pretty stubborn about using as much real stuff as he can afford. I think we have at least an even chance of seeing real planes in action.

Jon Favreau modeled the flight scenes in Iron Man after Top Gun and it shows. He tried to get as much stuff for real as he can, but I hear you - we need it balls to the walls, full-fledged, lock and loaded.

Vanilla Sky is not as good as the original movie that it re-made (A Spanish movie, called "Abre los ojos" or "Open Your Eyes". Also starring Penelope Cruz)

I think both were great films though with Vanilla...even though it was the exact same film...Tom Cruise made it feel like it was a different one. It's really the only shot to shot remake I would watch more than once

I've seen both and I actually liked Vanilla Sky better. Plus it has one of the all-time great movie soundtracks.
