Will it be Men in Black 3 or The City That Sailed for Will Smith?

03.24.2010
We haven't actually seen superstar Will Smith on the big screen since 2008's SEVEN POUNDS. If you've seen it, then you might understand why (i.e. it was terrible).

But now, Big Willie's bobbin' and weavin' around two projects, one of which will apparently be his next: A return to the franchise that helped catapult him into stardom with MEN IN BLACK 3, or the Andrew Niccol (THE TRUMAN SHOW, GATTACA) -penned THE CITY THAT SAILED.

According to Variety, THE CITY THAT SAILED "revolves around a New York street magician who is unhappily separated from his young daughter. The girl, who moves to London, finds magic candles that make her wishes comes true, with unintended consequences: The island of Manhattan separates from the continent and floats toward England, bringing her dad ever closer." Smith's I AM LEGEND director Francis Lawrence was originally attached to direct, but that apparently is no longer the case as Variety says no one is currently on the film.

Meanwhile, with MEN IN BLACK 3, there seems to be no director, no writer, no info... nothing! I loved MEN IN BLACK, a tremendously fun sci-fi comedy with great characters and performances. Then there was MEN IN BLACK 2, a film that was, frankly, a piece of shit. Both films, however, made tons of money globally. MIB raked in just under $590 million while MIB2 brought in just over $440 million. I guess the question should really be, "Does Smith opt for the easy buck or not?"
Extra Tidbit: MEN IN BLACK director Barry Sonnenfeld began his career as a cinematographer for porn films. There's a DP joke in there somewhere...

He's going to do the lame sounding City movie, we all know it. It's a shame because I would've loved to see MIB III, I wonder if he would've done a song for it. I hate good dramatic actor Will Smith, I want funny/cool/hip Will Smith back. First Ghostbusters 3 goes down now probably this, my only hope is in Bill & Ted 3 somehow getting off of the ground with Reeves and Winter involved. I hate unfinished trilogies. Leaving movies at 2 flicks does not sit well with me at all.

that's hard...

I know the dude has got to be gunning for a oscar win but I can see him just being kind of a loyal guy to the MIB franchise and maybe just wanting to have some fun...
i'd rather see him do the City that sailed flick.

eh

I am sort of torn on this subject. At the one hand I would like to see a MIB 3 and the other hand I dont. If they can capture what made MIB good and fun, then I would like to see it, but on the other hand, it might be best to leave the MIB series alone.

I'd want to see Independence Day 2 before Men in Black 3. And Seven Pounds was underrated, and Smith was excellent.

Let MIB die with dignity

I loved MIB, hated Men In Black 2, partly because it was a shitty movie, but partly because after a great first film the shock of aliens living among us had become an overused joke and a crutch for bad writing, just about everything that couldnt be explained in that movie was because someone was secretly an alien or something was alien technology.

Seven Pounds was decent but relied too heavily on trying to be a tear jerker (also i think it was unbelievable and stupid for smith's character

I think The City That Sailed could be a good film for Smith, it sounds a little bit like a kiddie Eddie Murphy flick but i know Smith wont ham it up like Murphy has been doing for the last decade.

Dumb

" If you've seen it, then you might understand why (i.e. it was terrible). "

You know, your whole article was good except for that. If you are going to type an opinion like that then make it look like your opinion. The way you said it makes it look like that was the general consensus and that the movie sucked.

Which in turn makes it look like the movie sucked to people who havent seen it.

I thought the movie was good and i like to see him in dramatic roles.

I agree, but if you'll notice, that's become a serious issue in nearly every article released on this site recently. For some reason, the writers here just can't help but post their own opinions as widely regarded fact which is just plain Bull Shit.

I can't understand why people are so hard on sequels. At the very least, they're a chance to see your favorite characters on screen again.

I like "Men In Black" and "Seven Pounds". The first one is great fun and the second is a good movie, but just good.
"Men In Black II" was, IMO, a disappointment. But let's not dwelve into that...

I thought "MIB 3" was kind of a prequel, and there was talk of Josh Brolin replacing Tommy Lee Jones as a young version of Agent K. Now Smith is involved? What happened?

Maybe The City That Sailed might be happening first. 7 Pounds was okay by me. I kinda miss him in a more dramatic role like what he did in Six Degree of Separation several years ago.

Hmmm....

It looks like the writer has been drinking a bit of 'Haterade'. I haven't seen 'Seven Pounds'...but I believe the reason it didn't resonate was due to the pessimistic ending for the hero.(IMDB actually has the film--'Seven Pounds' at 7.2 or 7.3, I believe.)

Personally, I didn't like Men in Black 2. I wish they had Smith and Linda Fiorentino from the first film reprising their characters.

If they can do something different with the 3rd film, I'd say go for it, otherwise take a chance with
