Will Man of Steel feature Jimmy Olsen or Jenny Olsen?

Jan. 22, 2013by: Alex Maidy

MAN OF STEEL is being proclaimed as a completely revised take on Superman that we have never seen in a film before. Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan have been saying since day one that this is a Superman that exists in a modern, real world, not the retro-1950s world of the Richard Donner films. We already know that Superman is not welcomed by humanity with open arms and that he deals with fear from people. We also know that Perry White is now African American and Lois Lane is a ginger. But, could there be another big swap we didn't know about?

To date, we have not heard a peep about Jimmy Olsen in MAN OF STEEL. I assumed his character had been left out or reduced to a minor role. But, there may be something else to it. The intrepid folks over at ComicBookMovie have stumbled across a credit on the IMDb page for MAN OF STEEL listed actress Rebecca Buller as "Jenny Olsen". Now, this could be a random character name, but that would be incredibly coincidental for a movie like this. If you look at the image of Buller above compared to the trailer shot of Laurence Fishburne running from destruction in Metropolis, that looks like the same person. So, a character named Olsen running with Perry White? I am leaning towards Jimmy Olsen has become a woman.

I personally do not have any issue with a change like this. Whether Jimmy or Jenny, the character can accomplish the same purpose of comic relief. In the end, does this fly in the face of DC canon? Yes, but it may not be a detriment to the overall story.

We will find out when MAN OF STEEL opens in theaters on June 14, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Dang, Jenny Olsen is pretty cute!

no problem. olsen was always an ultra minor character. the switch is no more earth shattering than Perry White being black. now, if Lois became Louis Lane...

jimmy olsen is actually pretty important to superman. he's superman's only public human friend. this is critical in some superman comic stories.

I don't see a problem with superman confiding in a women instead of a man. No big deal. Comic fans might care, but I doubt anyone else will give a shit.

Not a big deal...

The fanboy in me is slightly concerned, but not a big deal at all. And to that "bails1004" dumbass, it's perfectly reasonable to be a straight made and have a straight female best friend. It is the 21st century. Hell is anything this could be seen as accommodating the Smallville cannon, since Choe Sullivan served the confidant role there.

Don't care. Its fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a Smallville, where they used a Jimmy Olsen surrogate (the real Jimmy's uncle) so that an Olsen-like character could be interacting with characters he was conceivably be too young to be interacting with. Not that Jimmy would be too young for Man of Steel, but rather now Man of Steel has a very expendable character if they need to up the stakes and later introduce her brother or cousin, Jimmy, in a later sequel. Just saying!

Why such a silly change? What's the point of it?

I honestly have zero faith in this movie. Nothing about it is working for me. From the ridiculously melancholy music used in the trailer (because we all know Superman is an epic real life tragedy *rolleyes*), to the fact that one of the worst writers in Hollywood wrote the script, to WB using Nolan's name to try and sell this (despite Nolan saying that he isn't really that involved, and doesn't understand Superman). It all rubs me the wrong

I agree with the tidbit, girl is pretty damn cute. As long as it doesn't affect the movie, I am ok with character changes, some fanboys just really need to chill for real. The more i hear about this movie the more i am excited for it.

It's okay...

...because they're going to reboot this franchise again five years from now anyway.

Honestly, if I have to sit through another origin story of an already established superhero....I mean, how many fucking times does Jor-El and Uncle Ben have to die on screen before audiences finally get it? Move on from the origin story. Tell a self-contained story. We live in the world that's connected by the internet. For the five people left out there who don't know who the fuck Superman is, they can look

I wasn't talking about just Superman, uberfanboi. Pull the tights out from between thy cheeks, take a deep breath, and relax.

I have no problem with this. Jimmy Olsen is an important character to Superman, but he's not THAT big of a character to me to really be upset with over a change in appearance.

Snyder did say that this would be a version of Superman that we have never seen.

This is a reply to DaForce. I agree with you on skipping origins. I been toying with the idea with what WB should do with the next batman series of movies. Instead of the all too familiar origin story, how about we have a batman and a Gotham that already has the villains established. Instead of having to introduce all these characters with origins, have a simple explanation on how that particular villain(s) origin....example, batman is in the cave looking at the bat-computer while its

Anyways way off subject, I'm watching return of the killer tomatoes on Netflix, whatever happened to the cutie in that movie.

"example, batman is in the cave looking at the bat-computer while its explaining that bad guy in a computer voice. "

Oh god, that gave me flashbacks to "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin", which both did this to establish their villains' backstories. My recommendation: never assign computers Exposition Duty

As long as the movie turns out awesome, I don't mind if it's Jimmy or Jenny. Speaking of which, Jenny Olsen is quite cute.

I wouldn't mind it - I loved Kat Dennings in Thor because she was playing the kid sidekick, a role normally given to male actors. Genderflipping Jimmy Olsen doesn't seem too sacrilegious to me, speaking as a DC fan. However, I would have loved it if they kept the character as a redhead (and given Lois darker hair) but hey, I got over the "Bond isn't blond" thing fast enough.

WHY?!

Ohh sure let Jimmy Olsen be Jenny Olsen and while we are at it let Lois be a dude! COME ON HOLLYWOOD..have we finally stopped caring about the product we put out there? have we gotten to the point where there are no rules? There used to be a unwritten rule in movies, you make a movie based on a book, comic, cartoon..then you represent it to the full extent in the movie verision. Now a days, the movie industry doesnt GIVE A F*$%# if they stick strictly do the original material.
Just

Just because you get the movie rights to make a movie, doesnt give you the right to make it in the vision you want!!!! Why doesnt anybody stand up to these people in hollywood and force them to stay as close to the original material as possible. AHHH!

This is just like the decals on Superman's suit. A stupid & pointless ego trip for the film makers to try and claim something as "their own".

Why change Jimmy Olsen into a girl? They had to make a conscious effort to say "hey, lets make Jimmy a girl". Why? "I like sex. And Money"

I wonder if Lana Lang is going to cast as a cat. Why not? She's just a minor character.

More Change For The Sake Of Change

Does anybody really care whether Olsen is a man or woman? It goes in the same category as Perry White being black. Whenever movies start making. unnecessary changes to minor characters it feels like desperation on the part of the film makers and nothing more. The trailers for this film look even more depressing then the trailers for Superman returns. When did Superman become a depressing character? Superman is the one DC superhero who is completely comfortable in who he is. The trailers

Superman is the one DC superhero who is completely comfortable in who he is. The trailers make him look like some kind of depressed anti-hero. That combined with all of these changes that nobody cares about tell me we're getting yet anyone DC dud of a hero who should be the easiest to bring to the screen. Richard Donner may have messed with Lex Luthor and made him a little a silly, but he got the character of Superman 100% correct on the first try. There is nothing depressed ,or depressing, about Superman. I'll be seeing this movie because I love these superhero movies, but the truth is I think all the information and trailers for this point to ones big turd so far.
