Will Sam Mendes commit to making another Bond?

Feb. 15, 2013by: Niki Stephens

Can we all agree that Sam Mendes did a great job with SKYFALL? His addition to the Bond catalogue has brought the character to so many new fans who have found a new love for 007.

With the success of the film, is Mendes likely to sign on for another installment? According to Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, there's a 75% chance of it happening. So you're saying there's a chance? YES! Early on, Mendes was reluctant to do a sequel because it was originally commissioned to be a two part story with the films being shot back to back which would take a four year commitment. Now with that idea abandoned, it's opened the director up to seriously think about taking on helming duties again.

Right now, screenwriter John Logan has a two treatments with a rough outline of the plot. Mendes is awaiting a finished script before going all in.

Even if he does jump on board, it will be a bit before they can start filming. Mendes is currently directing King Lear, and is also putting together a musical version of Roald Dahls Charlie And The Chocolate Factory which opens on May 18th. It's possible that production on BOND 24 could begin later this year, or early 2014.

I adore Mendes so I hope he does decide to get involved with this again.

Extra Tidbit: Roger Deakins is a f*cking excellent cinematographer. That is all.

Oscars for Deakins and Newman!

Despite the fact that both Roger Deakins and Thomas Newman have been nominated multiple times, they have seriously out done themselves once again, and for a Bond film! I hope both go home as Academy Award winners on Oscar night.
I would be thrilled to see Sam Mendes return to the world of James Bond. Aside from Martin Campbell's great work on "Casino Royale", "Skyfall" has the best direction out of all the Bond films.

Bring back Bond

I'm all for Mendes returning but I also want Bond to return. The studio has to remember not to lose sight of what makes Bond great. I want the gadgets, the women, the one liners and action. You can have all that without the cheese and still have a great Bond film and great film overall.

With the final scene of Skyfall i think its clear that they'll go more in that direction from now on. They've set up Q, moneypenny and a male M just like the old school ones.

I wouldn't mind, yet I wouldn't mind another great director's take. Either way, just happy that they're moving forward for another.

Sweet! I thought Skyfall was awesome, so this is good news to me. Didn't know the two film, back to back thing had been abandoned though. That also sounds like good news--I'd much rather see a film that stands on its own, like Skyfall did.

Finally saw Skyfall when I blind bought it last week & i thought it was a major improvement over Quantum of Solace. Skyfall felt like an old school Bond movie, which I felt the movies since Brosnan steered far from. Bond is the one series that needs to stay consistent in order to work. SO I am game for Sam Mendes returning to direct another Bond.

As a huge Bond fan,i hate to say that skyfall is one of the worst Bond movies.i think people and media hyped it out of sympathy and to save Bond franchise from dying after the MGM bankruptcy thing.i have been waiting for non-daniel craig bond film.hope they select Michael fassbender as next bond.hope they dont "snob"ize the next bond film and make us like it forcefully

As much as I love Fassbender, he would be a horrible choice. Sounds to me like you just despise the current Bond and will not allow yourself to enjoy any of his series of films? Shame, as these three we have gotten so far have been pretty good and Craig is an AMAZING Bond.

I liked Skyfall, but it's not in my Top 5 Bond films. I just found it trying to be a little too dark and serious. Which isn't bad, it's just not the trend I want to see with Bond. You should be having fun watching a Bond movie. I think Casino Royale found the right blend of seriousness and humor. If Mendes can do that, I'm ok with him returning.

All for Mendes doing another

Casino Royale is still my favorite 'modern Bond' flick but there is no denying that Skyfall was fantastic and Mendes is a perfect fit with Craig and the material. It was one of the rare times that the franchise felt like a great film as opposed to a (nonetheless full proof) formula. All of those who are hating should remember how mediocre this series can get then give the man the respect he deserves.

Awsome....

Great news.... I truly believe they should take the safe path with the fewer bond movies Daniel has left. I think he's the best yet why not take advantage of that with good directors

Bond goes well with Mendes

Sam Mendes should without question , should direct another Bond Movie. He does very well with the characters and story that I dont think any of us are willing to let the Bond franchise be handed over to another director just yet.

I thought Skyfall was amazing. I can't decide just yet if I think it was better than Casino Royale. Sam Mendes is one of my favorite directors and he did a terrific job on Skyfall and delivered on all cylinders and because of that I would welcome him back with open arms.

But I would love to see what Nolan or Danny Boyle does with their own Bond film.

Boooo

The movie looked good, but wasn't a James Bond movie. Bond would have never done most of those things. Putting in little things that make it feel like a Bond movie, or a homage to an old one, doesn't make it a Bond movie. It could have stared any action star. It made me really like Quantam.

My opinion is this: Sam Mendes is a brilliant painter and a very mediocre storyteller. Always has been. Skyfall is a gorgeous-to-look-at movie with a by-the-numbers story and more plotholes than I can ignore (opening scene bad guy shot a British agent to death and fired hundreds of rounds all over Istanbul but not until Bond digs a shattered bullet out of his shoulder three months later is MI-6 able to do ballistics test? Really?)

Despite its flaws, Skyfall remains an excellent Bond film

Despite its flaws, Skyfall remains an excellent Bond film THANKS to Mendes camera work and Daniel Craig's pitch perfect take on the character.

So yeah, time to see what a master storyteller like Danny Boyle or Chris Nolan can do with this franchise.

No

No thanks. I'd rather have Nolan do a new one than have to sit through another Sam Mendes Bond. The story was wonky and the whole movie was about M which was annoying. The whole Skyfall school scenes made no sense. Why didn't MI6 come and help them? So many bad plot holes. How did Bardem's character know exactly where to blow up the wall so the train would fall through it? I thought the movie was okay, but it's not one of my favorites. They should bring back Martin Campbell. He was the

What do you expect?

Heres the deal: No matter who writes it, directs it, or even stars in it, every Bond film from now until the end of the time has been and will be structured like this:

-Action packed opening scene
-Original song during the opening credits
-2 Bond girls (one of them will probably die)
-A stylized, over-the-top villain
-A bunch of action scenes, twists, gadgets, and funny one-liners
-Bond will beat the villains, and move on to the next assignment

Thats the Bond formula, and it aint

Thats the Bond formula, and it aint changing. So if you expect another director to come in and do something completely different, thats not going to happen. And in terms of Mendes, I thought Skyfall was about as good of a Bond film as youre going to get. I loved it, and he actually gave us a Bond film that DID have some unexpected twists and turns, despite everything above being checked off.

And to the people below: You guys think Skyfall was worse than Moonraker? Or Die Another Day? Huh!?!?

Not sure if that last comment including me but if it did then the answer is no. However Skyfall is not the best Craig Bond movie. Casino Royale still is. Even Quantum of Solace is better than Skyfall.

I just don't get it...

Why the hate? After the extremely mediocre movie we got in Quantam, Skyfall was a much-welcomed return to the Bond greatness that was re-established with Casino Royale. Casino was better, but Skyfall is a close second. Great story, acting, action, and especially cinematography. I even enjoyed the ending, which people criticize for being a Home Alone ripoff. It made the impact of the story even more personal for both Bond and M. Brilliant idea. While I'd like new and fresh faces doing more Bond

The only reason I saw Skyfall was to be a completest. It was an excruciating experience, I just don't understand it. Overrated, Overrated, Overrated

While I agree that Mendes' direction was (mostly) very good, the love and hype surrounding this film baffle me. It has such a cartoon of a villain that gets away with a plot that he had no real way of controlling (unless he's a mutant that can see into the future, and control time. If so, I missed that part of the movie). Overrated quite a bit, but still very good, and the last 40 minutes are wonderful.

Mendes should come back, but with a new and far better screenwriter.

And the trolls come out in droves....

"Skyfall" was just what the Bond franchise needed, great style and emphasis on characters, so I'd be up for Sam Mendes returning, even if it doesn't seem likely. If not, no harm done, and I'd be up to for Danny Boyle stepping up.

Emphasis on character sure, but in the pursuit of a cool villain, they forsook realism and logic quite a bit which really hurt the movie when the last two tried so damn hard to make sure those were included.

I hope not. For one The Bond franchise should constantly be getting fresh eyes in the director chair. But also because while Mendes' visuals are stunning and Skyfall is a Top Five film in the franchise, it suffered from Mendes' typical ham handed approach to characters and dialog. He doesn't deal in subtlety and it resulted in a pretty linear movie, the beats of which were easy to predict. It's time for Nolan.

I fell for the Skyfall hype and it was completely and highly overrated. It was just another average Bond movie that still can't top Casino Royale. Quite sad really. Now I'm not saying I'm against Mendes coming back but if he does they better get a better script next time.
