Will Schwarzenegger be making Terminator 5 or King Conan any time soon?

Oct. 12, 2012by: Alex Maidy

Now that Arnold Schwarzenegger is acting again at full strength, the rumor mills have been working overtime to discuss the potential projects he may be entertaining. At the top of the list are returns to two of the franchises he is synonymous with: CONAN and THE TERMINATOR.

In terms of CONAN, after the disastrous reboot from a couple years ago the only way that fans would pack theaters would be if Arnold himself returned to the series. The man is much older but that could come into play in the story, especially if they spin the oft-discussed KING CONAN to use Schwarzenegger's age as a plot device to, for lack of a better phrase, come out of retirement to crack some skulls again.

During his book tour in France, Schwarzenegger was directly asked about CONAN and had this to say (translated from French, so excuse the grammatical errors): "I made contacts in that respect, because it is a project that is particularly dear to me. I must first shoot Ten by David Ayer, but then we're going to focus on it. Remains to be seen who would direct and if it is John Milius script which would be adapted."

If handled correctly, I would be interested in seeing KING CONAN. They could always pair him up with an actor to play his son to take some of the action off of his hands and still keep him in the picture.

As for THE TERMINATOR, we had such high hopes for a while. Megan Ellison purchased the rights to the franchise at auction and FAST FIVE director Jeremy Lin was attached. Seeing as he is off making FAST SIX, I doubt TERMINATOR 5 will happen soon, but it appears that Arnold and Lin had already had talks about the direction the next movie should take.

Den of Geek cites sources as saying Lin and Arnold were developing an idea for the story that would’ve centred on an alternate timeline in which Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese lived. Interesting. I remember that the McG/Christian Bale movies were rumored to involve time traveling to a contemporary period so they could film the war with the machines. But, using an alternate timeline would definitely give the franchise a reboot that could open up a ton of possibilities. It would not, however, explain why the T-800 has aged.

Between these two, I think I would rather see a new TERMINATOR movie done correctly. Lin and Arnold are correct in waiting to make sure that they get a good screenplay because both RISE OF THE MACHINES and SALVATION were lacking compared to the James Cameron movies. Here is hoping we get to see both of these projects at some point.

Extra Tidbit: I say make a CONAN THE TERMINATOR movie and mash up both franchises for the biggest and most awesome fantasy-sci-fi epic of all time!

After seeing Arnie in T3 I was actually a little embarassed for him, and after the mess that was T: Salavation I wash my hands of anything Terminator. I'm a huge Arnie fan, but honestly the T series never really did much for me and really hasn't aged that well IMO.

Now the King Conan movie has some strong potential. I want to see that Arnie swagger again that all the T films lacked. If John Milius writes and directs I'll preorder my tickets now.

I personally would rather see him do Terminator next, but it sounds like according to his interview after Ten he's focusing on Conan. I suppose it's better that he does Conan next, or we may never see it. I say go for it Arnold! He's probably only got a couple more Terminator films in him if he does them back to back.

I'll start off by saying I'm a huge fan of Arnold's movies, but how the hell would it be feasible for him to reprise his role as the terminator? Cyberdyne's new geriatric model? It just doesn't work.

There is no way he could play a Terminator again.

King Conan could work, though. Not sure a studio will invest into a Conan movie after the failure of the reboot. We'll gonna have to wait it out...

Conan the Terminator would be awesome! Have James Earl Jones return as Thulsa Doom and put him in a codpiece.....nah for real, Conan the King could work. I remember once hearing them talking about having Vin Diesel playing his wily son. I'm not a fan of Vin's but he would be pretty good in a role like that alongside Arny...

I'd say a Terminator film but don't make Arnold the Terminator - an aging Terminator would look a bit weird. However, Arnold should play some kind of Resistance's veteran commander so powerful physically and mentally that Skynet decides to mold the Terminator after him which would also explain why we see the Arnie Terminator at the end of Terminator Salvation.

For Conan I have no beef but with the Terminator I say, Arnie or no Arnie leave it alone. T4 was the final nail in the coffin of that franchise and it was a let down with all its cringe-worthy homages.

If you want T5 just re-use deleted scenes from all the previous movies and boom, its homages all over again with a 'different' feel. It would work well for CyberDyne being the factory where the Terminator was crushed, Kyle Reese appearing in T2 and then breaking her out as in he didn't die,

Sounds kick-ass? No? I thought so.

Damn Arnold fans, I hate that they co-opted the Conan character to the point where a 20 year reboot is mocked by people talking like it was so awful, when it really wasn't at all. But you think Arnold could still play the Conan character? Come on, have you seen him lately? Stop living in the past, pull the nostalgia stick out of your asses, and stop bitching about fresh takes on 20 year old films. Jesus.

The character of Conan the King is in his 60s...which would make Arnold perfect for the part.

First off - this is about Arnie returning to Conan or Terminator, not discussing the merits of the new Conan movie. If you want to talk about the new one then fine - Jason was good as Conan. Thats about it. The story was horrid, sorry, there was NO STORY at all. If you read any Conan stuff you would know that. I am all for having a new Conan movie, and Kull, and Red Sonja etc, but ONLY if they make it good. Its true that Arnie movie isnt a perfect Conan movie, but at least its a good movie!!!

Plus King Conan should be older. FYI the past wasnt so bad, so i guess in 20 years you will burn all your copies of Nolans batman series, avengers, and Iron man right - you dont want to live in the past!

Crown of Iron

Conan the Barbarian is my favorite movie of all time (up there with likes lawrence of arabia, superman, 2001 etc) and even Destroyer is cool because its in the spirit of the marvel comics and it would be a dream come true for Arnie to finish this trilogy off. There are SEVERAL King Conan stories that are really good. Look to the Howard source material and lets get a great Conan movie!

After watching Looper, they should give Rian J. a crack at the new Terminator. I doubt he'd want to do it, but I really enjoyed the tone and style of Looper.

The King Conan script was pretty damn good, and I would love see such a violent epic brought to life! It would be a great way to wash that foul taste of the Conan remake out of my mouth.

I'd much rather see him kicking ass as King Conan, complete with long grey hair & beard. He looks awesome with that grey goatee in The Tomb pics.

down for King Conan, but not Terminator

well I really want to see Terminator, but I don't want Arnie coming back to drastically change anything. I want there to be another Terminator movie that serves as a prequel to Salvation (showing how John Connor changed from the person he was at the end of T3 to the full on soldier he was in the beginning of Salvation) and then one more movie in the Salvation trilogy, the big finale of the whole series, showing the final war between man and machine. That would it would make sense to bring Arnie

Schwarzenegger should be King Conan. He should do the movie for the reasons that you mention. Arnie is the right age. And, to some extent, he has lived King Conan's life: former bad-ass, politician, hero seeking one last adventure. Do the film. We fans will see it.
BTW, I liked the Momoa Conan. But, you are very right that it is kind of a hidden gem like John Carter or Dredd 3D.

I'm hip to see Arnie as King Conan, but while the reboot was bad financially, I really liked the film itself.
