Will Smith & Joel Edgerton lead the charge in poster for David Ayer’s Bright

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I haven't been quite sure what to make of David Ayer's BRIGHT, which takes place in an alternate present-day Los Angeles inhabited by human, orcs, elves, and fairies, but I'm slowly and surely coming around to Ayer's crazy looking fantasy cop-drama mashup. Starring Will Smith as Ward and Joel Edgerton as Jakoby, who happens to be the first orc to join the LAPD, the upcoming film will find the pair embarking on a routine patrol which will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Netflix has released the first poster for BRIGHT, which you can check out below. Don't forget, click to embiggen!

Not an overly imaginative piece as posters go, but I'm digging Jakoby's worried expression. He may very well come out of this as a fan-favourite character. Noomi Rapace, who plays the villain, has said that BRIGHT is "very intense" and will feature "a lot of fight scenes." I'm certainly excited to see what David Ayer has cooked up for us in the film, but part of what got Ayer excited about working with Netflix was that they literally let him do whatever he wanted in the film. That level of creative freedom was refreshing for Rapace to see, as she was happy that David Ayer was "in a space where he could do what he wanted," adding that "It’s less people involved and I think, for him as a filmmaker, that gave him a certain freedom. His whole energy around him and the atmosphere he created for us actors was a very fun and creative place to be in."

The official synopsis for BRIGHT:

Set in an alternate present-day, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds (Ward, a human played by Will Smith, and Jakoby, an orc played by Joel Edgerton) who embark on a routine patrol night that will ultimately alter the future as their world knows it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.

BRIGHT will debut on Netflix on December 22, 2017.
