Will Smith lets you know his thoughts on Independence Day: Resurgence

01.04.2016

Through the construction of INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE, one of the biggest questions the sci-fi sequel had to answer for fans of the original was whether or not Will Smith would be returning to reprise his role as Steven Hiller. After all, INDEPENDENCE DAY is one of those films that helped build Smith into a bonafide star, so would he be back?

As we now know, Smith opted out of participating, and, as a result, the series took steps to make sure that there is no way in hell he's ever coming back, even if he changed his mind one day down the line. But what does Smith himself think of how everything has shaken out - INDEPENDENCE DAY moving forward with more chapters, the fate of his belovec character, etc.? In an interview with Yahoo!, Smith commented on his feelings.

I was working on Suicide Squad during that time. [Independence Day director] Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool. I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.

Big Willie Style is in need of some Kleenex... Something appears to have gotten in his eye. I'm sure he won't be a snotty emotional wreck this summer though. He's got his own blockbuster - SUICIDE SQUAD - to worry about.

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE lands in theaters on June 24, 2016.

Smith maybe out of IDR, but what if this is all intentional mis-direction to create some surprise. A surprise Will Smith return in ID3?

Sure sure. Captain Steven Hiller is dead. I read the headlines, SPOILER he died in a test flight of the newest model of military plane built from alien technology. But let's not forget. People get kidnapped by aliens in ID4.....Randy Quaid.
Hollywood is looking to re-boost their image and create more secrecy and surprise than ever. Look at the secrecy in the production of Force Awakens. I'm not convinced that Will Smith is completely out of Independence Day. Resurgence? Yes, unless the film

However, they've already announced Independence Day 3 and possibly 4, which means that IDR has to end with some big build ups to the next film. Look at Pirates: Dead Man's Chest, the death of Jack Sparrow and the return of Barbossa at the very end. A sudden Will Smith return, would be the biggest outcome.

I will only accept that if Steven Hiller come back as a cyborg.

I'm guessing Suicide Squad has a bigger paycheck than Independence Day sequel.

As much as I dislike Smith, it would have been cool to see him back standing alongside Goldblum, Pullman, and the ghost of Randy Quaid's character.

He's probably just going to wipe his tears off with all those money that DC & WB paid him. Independence Day 2 looks pretty cool, but superhero movies are still the more bankable franchises right now.

It would have been nice to see him back if he wasn't so greedy

I think they'll bring him back in the post credits scene. He got too close, almost died, came out alive and had all this info on the aliens/their ship, so they had to tell the public he was dead because he knew too much or something. Or he went crazy from what he saw. Smith could've easily shot one scene for this movie. Plus it would skyrocket interest for the sequels.

i believe his character is presumed dead..due to the fact that the producers need to come up with a reason why Cap. Hiller isnt in the movie. but in fairness. Will Smith was in talks to return for the sequel way before he was even approached for Suicide Squad. so he's just making excuses. im sure through creative story telling if Smith did want to come back for a 3rd sequel, they would find a way to do it and im sure they already have it in their back pocket. but if ID: REsurgence is a success

Answer me this: if you were offered to do a sequel for a movie you did back in the fucking 90s, or star in a new film whose franchise is actually designed with sequels in mind instead of as an afterthought, what the fuck would YOU pick??

Right. But, am I the only one who thinks ID4 will bomb? Or not do well? I know this wouldn't be a draw now, but a big reason I wanted to see that movie was to see the Fresh Prince say ah hell no to aliens. It's cool the supporting cast is back, but they REALLY should've gotten the rock or someone

i doubt his character is dead. they can totally bring him back if they wanted in Independence Day 3 or 4. He faked his death in that crash for (insert reason here). easy fix

hard to sympathize

when he asked for 50 million upfront without reading the script because he felt the movie would bank on his name.

Yeah that is pretty awful. Do you have a source on that? In just asking because it's not what joblo reported several months ago, and it's not what Enmerich claimed was the reason either.

Grand_Marquis, he doesn't have a source. He's making it because like a lot of others on here, he hates Will Smith. ....It's like.. get over Django already. It was years ago.. let it go.
