Will Smith out of Independence Day sequel

Feb. 7, 2014by: Niki Stephens

As of this moment, Will Smith will not be welcoming anyone to Earth.

The actor is said to be out of INDEPENDENCE DAY 2. Okay, he might be out of the sequel.

While having Smith would be a great draw, his involvement isnt necessary for the sequel to move onwards. Emmerich and co-writer/producer Dean Devlin handed over a rough draft of the script to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN scribe James Vanderbilt. I guess they knew that Smith might bail out so Vanderbilt wrote two scripts-- one with Captain Steven Hiller (Smith) as the focus, and the other without the character.

Heres where the might be out part of the story comes from: It seems that Smith has told the studio that he wont be taking part but the actor still hasnt had a final discussion with Emmerich. Apparently Smith has been back and forth with the idea of reprising his role.

Hey, guess what, Will Smith? I have both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. So while it would be cool if you would join the party, we wont be upset if you dont stop by.

Extra Tidbit: That said, can we talk about this whole MEN IN BLACK reboot thing now? Wasn't that R.I.P.D.?

I think a lot of you are being a bit too harsh on Will. Maybe he decided not to come back for ID42 not because of money, but cause he probably wants to do something different. Looking at next few films he's got coming up, he looks like wants to tackle some smaller fair rather than big blockbusters. Or probably doesn't see the point to come back for the sequel since the 1st one didn't really need one. I wouldn't be surprised within the next 2 years, his career will take a turn like Matthew

Go ahead.......

.... with the thumbs down ratings. I am stunned that an irrelevant sequel to an OK movie has this many comments at all. Once you take away the nostalgia of remembering ID4,it kinda sucked.

Agreed. It was a roller coaster ride seeing the white house get blown up back then, but these days we see that happen at least 2-3 times a year in cinema. Oh, and the script and plot were only so so. Truth is that its only about as good as The Day After Tomorrow, the first Transformers, Armageddon, etc. Fun to watch once, but not a great repeat watch.

Will Smith is such an a***hole. He lacks humility towards movies that made him what he is. His last outing in After Earth demonstrated his total arrogance towards fans and film makers alike by insisting his son Jaden, who cannot act at all, be part of the movie. Smith is a bottler and this is proven by him turning down role like Neo and Django Unchained. Actors should remember who puts them in the million dollar houses and who pays for the million dollar lifestyles. Continuity is a massive part

This film will totally bomb without him.

I don't know if there's any movie that did such a horrible job standing the test of time. The original is a POS just like every movie with the exception of The Patriot (which I haven't seen in like ten years it might suck to) enrich has made since.

Probably my least favorite director of all time.

I disagree completely. The original is probably one of Emmerich's only good films, and a fine example of how to do a big budget action spectacle right. The characters are fun, the action is fun, and the special effects mostly hold up despite the fact that film is something like 18 years old now.

Why? Because they wouldn't let him bring the whole family along? His career isn't so great at the moment, so he could still come back. Let's wait until the fat lady sings.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite Smith roles, and it wouldn't feel like a proper sequel without him. I wish he would have done this sequel over Men in Black 3 (which I still liked).

I like Smith, but his career is not exactly hot right now. I say he should jump on it. No one is going to beg him or pay a ridiculous amount of money to have him back,

Welcome da Earf...

I was kinda hoping his character would be president by the time the next story rolls around. I still hope he does the movie, the more original cast the better. Judd Hursh better be back too!

it would be a bummer if he says no, but if the script is good I can't figure why he would say no. His latest films have not been the box office draw they once were. To have Pullman and Goldblum back is pretty cool! I wish they could find a way to bring back Randy Quaid! Maybe make it that he was abducted by the aliens when he went up into the alien ship.

I guess the script doesn't have any subliminal Scientology nods or have parts for Jaden or Willow Smith

Emmerich has already flattened New York in the first movie, so that must have been a problem when writing the script. It's not a proper Emmerich movie if he doesn't blow up New York.
I suppose he could rebuild NY in the first half of the movie and blow it up in the second half.

LOL what else is Will Smith doing. This could be a perfect come back movie after the disaster of After Earth.

Movie doesn't need him. Is actually probably better without him. Never understood his appeal. Not a good actor at all.
