Will Smith prepares his son, Jaden for what the planet has become in the trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth

Dec. 10, 2012by: Niki Stephens

The first international trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH is giving me some mixed feelings.

Have I fully recovered from the disaster that was THE LAST AIRBENDER adaptation? No. Am I willing to forgive? Possibly. Does this trailer help? Not sure.

The first seconds of the trailer had me. Then as I'm listening to Smith's interesting Southern accent, I get lost. I wonder if the majority of the movie will contain flashbacks of father and son moments while Kitai (Jaden Smith) treks across what Earth has become. I'm not too concerned about Jaden carrying a movie, since I did actually enjoy his performance in THE KARATE KID update. However, there were quite a few comedic moments in that. Jaden in a possibly coming of age film with more dramatic moments? We'll see. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanitys escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankinds new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitais craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

AFTER EARTH is due out June 7, 2013.

Say what you will about Shyamalan but he has directing talents. It's his writing that causes the trouble. But this movie is written by somenone else, so I have faith.
By the way, love Will Smith the same reason I love Cruise: they choose to star in movies I like to see.

I think it's very interesting and telling how they went from always advertising his movies as being "from the director of The Sixth Sense and Signs" to, now, just "Unbreakable." People got so burnt out on his last few awful films that by association the whole brand image of Sixth Sense and Signs has been crippled: "Oh, the guy who made the Sixth Sense made it? His last movie sucked!" Maybe they're hoping people will remember Unbreakable fondly and not remember that it's from the same mastermind

Also, Will Smith really needs to stop trying to shove his son down America's throat. We don't like him. He lacks charisma and the off-screen humility that made Smith so endearing to audiences. He's a cocky, loathsome creature with little to no acting abilities. And no, he can't rap, either. It's a sad day for the son of Will Smith when Justin Bieber's rapping skills outshine Jaden on the same track.

Let me guess...

the twist is they went back in time thinking 1000 years had actually passed OR they escape the jungle at the end and run into a sheriff who looks at them like they're crazy.

I remember the days when Shyamalan was considered a god of cinema. The media dubbed him the next Spielberg or Hitchcock. To say anything even remotely negative about him would result a furious rage from fanboys & movie buffs (kind of like Nolan today). Now look at him.

Something interesting occurs to me in looking at the image above. It says 'From the director of "Unbreakable."' Personally, I think it's his best film, but it's interesting that they're hearkening back to that film and not the more popular 'Signs' or 'Sixth Sense.'

To the trailer, I like the monologue. I like how he talks about fear being a choice. It DOES remind of the early elegance of Shyamalan's writing, specifically 'Unbreakable.' Visually, though, it looks bloated, glossy, and

I'd be excited if it weren't for M. Night Shyamalan

He hasn't made a good movie in a decade. Or even an okay film in a decade. After Signs he just decided to make SHITSTORM after SHITSTORM. The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender all had good looking trailers...but were shit movies.

The Village and Lady in The Water were good movies in my opinion! I think The Village was just edited poorly when the lead actress goes into the woods! Some scenes should have been revealed differently!

It could be interesting. I like that we're getting alot more blockbuster scifi films these days, the genre sort of died out of the mainstream eyes for awhile but its been making a good steady come back.

I felt the trailer got better as it went on. It looks like a journey, like a coming-of-age story. I'm down for any movie (especially sci fi) that takes the audience on a ride. I can't wait to see this on the big screen.

The last shyamalan film I saw was Lady In the Water. Which really disappointed me. All the other movies since then, I have waited for reviews. This however, whether the twist sucks, or the acting sucks (which it looks like it wont). It still looks fun, entertaining, thrilling, and interesting. So this will be the first M.Knight film I see in a while without waiting for reviews...

Some interesting ideas on one hand, and on the other M. Night Shyamalan. I haven't seen a film of his since Signs, and haven't felt particularly lacking. I sort of miss Will Smith (I don't know if that was an accent or just him talking softly). On the one hand I'm thrilled by the apparent resurgence in science-fiction coming next year. On the other, it reminds me ever so slightly of the Oblivion trailer, and while right now it's thrilling to think of another Tom Cruise vehicle, another M. Night

I don't think people trust him right now. He needs to broaden his horizons. Maybe a novel or a TV series. Something people might actually look at and think he's not a one-trick pony.

I am against it...

for the simple fact he hasnt earned it. You would think Will Smith would relaize this himself after working many years to be a successful music artist who became and actor and took quite a while for him to be taken serious. Now he just shoe horns his kids into movies without auditioning or any of that and even if they did, the threat of Will Smith blackmailing the people who don't choose his kids is to risky for most, so they would give it to him anyway. And about the KK, he was even worse than

Saying you won't make a movie unless they cast your son in a role isn't blackmail, it bartering power. The studio isn't forced to cast Will Smith to begin with.

I'll wait to see an official HD release but I'm not really feeling much from this. The CG looks pretty cheap, the story seems kinda boring and knowing Shyamalan is behind the camera gives me very little hope, even if he didn't write the whole thing.

In a vacum this looks like this could be good, the problem is that Shyamalan no longer gets the benefit of the doubt so to speak. He has burned through any "credibility capitol", and we have to assume the worst right now...

Hopefully this is a new beginning for him, not a another nail in the coffin...

I will be interested to hear the reviews as the release date approaches, if I get so much as a whiff of a 'twist ending' I'm out!

Looks good on the surface, but I don't trust Shyamalan. He hasn't made anything good in over 10 years.
As for the fear speech that Will Smith gives, that is close to something I have been saying for years. Fear is the most useless emotion a person can feel. Caution is infinitely more useful.

Life Of Pi in the future?

My wife said this looks like a futuristic version of Life of Pi, which is not a good thing IMO. I happened to have seen all of M. Night's films - not proud, but I had to see how much worst he could get (The Happening anyone?).

To be honest he is good directing suspense and horror but his formula no longer works. He just need to find great stories to bring him back on the map - stop writing stupid shit.

I'll probably see this because I know Will will do a good job. Want to see more...

I guess being that shyamalan is the director this film automatically gets bashed, I will always be a will smith fan and know he has more hits than misses, this actually looks good to me and minus some sketchy cgi looks like it'll be a fun sci-fi pic to go against the more serious Oblivion. Time for Jaden to show that papa has thought him a thing or two on acting.

Can we check the voting here? A bunch of anons upvoting the positive comments seems...fishy. I wouldn't put it past someone's assistant to be sitting there upvoting and downvoting from behind different proxies.

The exact number of ups coincides with the downs. And it doesn't align with the sentiments expressed in the comments.

@ Cricker -You may not like that Will Smith has the type of power and influence to help land his kid these roles, but Jaden Smith seems to hold his own. There are countless actors and actresses that are only making movies today because their famous parents paved the way, and that's not always a bad thing. If he goes through all the years that it takes to EARN these roles, the part will just go to another kid actor. He's building his resume.

Thats a very stupid statement, maybe its coming from some one whose dad gave him a job he didn't deserve either? You made my point for me, if he had to actual;ly earn it like most other normal people, he wouldnt get the role and another "deserving" person would, but somehow that would be bad? It is blackmail plain and simple, put my son in this movie or I wont do this other movie you want me to do. that is the exact definition of blackmail and by all reports he is a douche of the highest

That looks f'ing painful. Millions wasted on bad CGI, a talent void of an actor and his clone, and a director who hinges every movie on a twist at the end

This will make huge $$ no matter what. The marketing machine that made Will Smith a star will be behind it. And it will suck on donkey balls like a custom built Japanese donkey ball sucking robot.

Read the comments, wanted to like the trailer, realized when they said something about earth killing man that this is Shyamalan again, pretty sure he still hasn't learnt anything from his mistakes, I bet he'll argue you that The Happening was a good movie. Fatwomanizer called it, this looks like a another 10,000 BC.

10 000 BC

I think it's safe to say that this movie's gonna suck. It's a Shyamalan movie after all...

At some point it'd be nice for people to wake up and realize that Will Smith is not an actor. He's Will Smith. In everything. Moreover, his son is glaringly obnoxious on screen, and it's getting increasingly annoying that Smith is trying to perpetuate the idea that his offspring are talented as if their Hollywood's next generation, when in reality he buys projects for them.
Am I a bit biased? Absolutely. But there's truth to what I say.

...so what did you think of the trailer for After Earth, staring Will Smith and "his son [who is] glaringly obnoxious on screen"? Another M. Night failure?

I'm not incredibly optimistic, and I used to be a very big Night supporter, even after he did "Lady In The Water" and "the Happening", however, "The Last Airbender" and how this appears have persuaded me to believe that his best work is truly in the past, and a comeback is unlikely. A shame, since I loved his first films, even "The Village", and found enjoyable elements in "Lady" and "The Happening" (despite them both being glaringly flawed).
