Will Smith tells his son what he needs to do in this first clip from M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth

May. 14, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

After Earth

I don't think anyone really knows what to expect from AFTER EARTH, the latest from director M. Night Shyamalan. There are a bunch of  science-fiction films out this summer and into the fall (most recently Tom Cruise's OBLIVION) and I'm not sure if AFTER EARTH will be able to hold it's own against films like ELYSIUM and GRAVITY.

The first clip for AFTER EARTH has been released starring Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. The scene looks like it takes place soon after their ship has crashed on to Earth and the elder Smith is explaining to his son how he must find a homing beacon or both of them will die.

Synopsis:

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

I'm not sold on AFTER EARTH at all but I am at least willing to give it a shot, even if there are a lot of red flags for this movie in my opinion. We'll be able to see if AFTER EARTH is the next big thing or a complete misfire when it hits theaters on May 31st, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Is AFTER EARTH high on your list of movies to see this summer?

obvious spoiler from trailer and clips

ever see will smith walking after crash, he is obviously paralyzed why give something like this away in the trailer
without actually showing it, is this a stupid mistake or what ?
possibly they were worried about jaden carrying the movie on his own so they didnt come out and say that this is a jaden smith movie

Yeah. From the clip and the way he is sitting you can obviously see that he is paralyzed.

I don't think I've ever wanted to smash somebody's dumb fucking face in with a brick more than I do now. This Jaden kid just sets something off in me. Anyways, the more I see of this movie the worse it looks.

Smith should have told his son to stay away from the director...

Stay away from hack directors and horrible one note skinflake thin plot derived movies. Smith prolly thinks this will be his sons Independence Day, when in reality it will be his Wild Wild West/Made In America/Insert horrible Will Smith involving movie here.

Isn't really appealing to me. I'm guessing it'll be around 45% on Rotten Tomatoes

This movie is the least of the anticipation list. It just doesn't look good.

Nothing about the movie interests me, from it's sub par CG, borrowed story telling, and ridiculous dialogue ('Everything's evolved on this planet to kill humans.' But, uh, didn't humans leave 1000 years ago?). I predict it'll be a bad movie, but it'll make money due to Will Smith's name being on it and thus giving M Night yet another stay of execution he doesn't deserve....

I'm willing to give this a chance, but I'm not expecting the same type of great quality that was Oblivion.

What's interesting is that Oblivion doesn't seem like as much of an ego trip as After Earth - even though Oblivion starred Tom Cruise, it didn't come off as a giant vanity project.

Yikes.

Despite the overwhelming evidence that he's a stubbornly egotistical pricksickle, I always root on Shyamalan. I guess it's because when he's been good, he's been great (Unbreakable), and when he's been great, he's been fantastic (The Sixth Sense, Signs).

But he's also been so, so, so bad so, so, so often, you can't help but wonder if he's lost whatever magic he may have had (Lady in the Water, Airbender, The Happening).

I'd been pumped to see what he could do with Will Smith, but can't

I'd been pumped to see what he could do with Will Smith, but can't say I'm optimistic from these first glimpses. Remember, Shyamalan can make a very good actor look LOLarious (Wahlberg in Happening).

Best case scenario here? The Village.

I will no doubt see this when it comes on DVD - I'll let you know what I think of it then Im not able to predict the future unfortunately ...though I did think Green Lantern would suck before watching it. I suppose it also helps that I have not seen a Shyamalan movie since Unbreakable ...yes, really. I've only seen that, Sixth Sense and Signs. As for Jaden, he's definitely lost the kid cuteness he had in Kung Fu Kid and unless he's a late bloomer in the looks department...let's hope his

Meh

I figured M. Night Shamalama-ding-dong would've gotten his walking papers after the horrifically bad Airbender (and his last several shithole movies).
As for the whole "everything on this planet has evolved to kill humans" thing it will obviously be explained via some experiment gone awry (hence why humanity had to relocate.) Will we get the Shymalan twist ending that he's become so attached to it's become clich? I'm leaning toward yes.
