Will The X-Files return for a third movie or will we get a reboot on TV instead?

Dec. 5, 2012by:

THE X-FILES is one of my all time favorite series. I think I was one of the six or seven people who saw the second film in theaters. To this day I still rewatch old episodes and marvel at how great that show was. Being December 2012, the supposed date of the alien invasion from the series finale, I was holding out hope we would get some news about a third movie coming soon.

Alas, according to producer Frank Spotnitz, there is nothing new regarding another sequel. Despite both Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny lobbying for another go at the Mulder and Scully mythos, Spotnitz says there is no deal and no screenplay for a new X-FILES movie. But, he does have a strong inclination the show will be rebooted sometime soon.

Spotnitz told Den of Geek that a reboot is inevitable: "I mean, I don’t think I would have anything to do with it but you know, for better or for worse, these things are titles of big corporations, like 'Star Trek' belongs to Paramount and 'The X-Files' belongs to Twentieth Century Fox and it’s a huge asset in their libraries so I can’t imagine they would let it sit languishing forever ... Anything could happen. I just hope that if they do it, they do it well, that’s my only request."

I may be wrong, but isn't FRINGE essentially a reboot of THE X-FILES? FBI agent investigating the paranormal and slowly gets drawn into a conspiracy that spans beyond our government? Yeah, no need to reboot a great series like THE X-FILES. If they did, the only way I could see it working would be to have two new agents pick up where Mulder and Scully left off, leaving room for the original stars to make appearances. More of a sequel series than a reboot.

Whichever way this ends up going, I will always have my awesome collection of autographs from the cast and crew as well as my Gillian Anderson in blue catsuit poster. Ah, memories.

Extra Tidbit: I went to the X-FILES convention in Chicago in 1998. I got to meet Mitch Pileggi (Skinner) whose wife was about to give birth. He was using a yo-yo for stress relief. I got him a new one when his broke and painted it with the show logo in bright yellow. You can see him using it in a behind the scenes video from the sixth season. My claim to geek fame!

New X-File Movie

It would be great to see a new movie with Sculley and Mulder back together. How about the directors and producers go out to fans and to get a response on what we'd like to see in the third movie. It would get more fans to attend the movie and it might even be a huge hit!!!
Why Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny aren't in current movies always puzzles me. They are awesome actors and should be recognized for the talents!!!!!!

The story so far.

Here are gleanings from around the internet and other sources.
Carter, Duchovny and Anderson wish to shoot XF3 but FOX wants to do a "reboot" with a new cast. These would be young people and it is said that FOX want the storylines to focus on "relationships", not expensive Sci-Fi. Carter has told them he's not interested but the studio will go ahead without his involvement.

Another rumor is that Carter will shoot a movie "spoof" of the show with Duchovny and Anderson. Originally this was to be in New Zealand but has since been relocated to the UK. Sir Ian McKellan is supposedly in discussions to play the CSM character who is said to be a composite of the main bad guys from the show.
The "spoof" is supposedly a co-production between Carter's Ten Thirteen and Sir Peter Jackson's Wing Nut Films. Adding some credence to this is a "non-denial denial" by a source within Jackson's company: "I'm sure if the rumours are true, it will be announced by a movie studio in due course. ;)"
Initial reports said that the script was penned by Jackson's partner, Fran Walsh, but an early draft has been leaked online and is attributed to another writer. That script is getting raves from those who have seen it.
The prevailing belief is that Carter has given up on XF3 and FOX and is planning to send the studio a big F--k You! with this alleged spoof.

X-FILES lost me when they decided to kill Mulder and Skully's kid between the 2 movies just so they would NOT have to deal with this story...
When a franchise like X-FILES just go for the easiest way, instead of trying to solve a story, they don't deserve to go on any more !

Reboot X-Files

but instead of having the antagonists be aliens or people from another dimension let them be people from the future. It would give new meaning to the tag line "Fight the Future".

EXACTLY! I was thinking the same thing when read the article title, FRINGE is essentially the reboot / remake / this generation's X-FILES.....But instead of going to the "alien invasion" conspiracy route, they went with "parallel universe" conspiracy route. Why the hell do we need another similar series so soon (Fringe ending this year)?? Anyway, I agree with Cochise, I just need ONE MORE episode / movie / webisode whatever to wrapup the One Loose End of the original series....Then they can do

motherfuckers! Then you can reboot it or do whatever the hell you want and I'll just ignore it. But give me one more Duchovney/Anderson led X-Files movie at LEAST!

Sigh. I remember a time when 'reboot' meant a sequel with new talent (like Star Trek TNG). Now it's Hollywood's buzz word for softening the blow of a remake.

Let me be dead when x-files is remade

Being that X-Files is my all time favorite tv series I don't want to see a remake of it while I'm alive. I can deal with a continuation of the show with new characters, but if someone else get's cast as Mulder and Scully I will have a fit. Well not really a fit but I will not be happy. I know I will always have the original show to watch but the idea of remaking/rebooting the show makes me get a migrane. I just want a 3rd movie, lets end the alien invasion and get Mulder and Scully kicking ass

There is no need to reboot this, because they dont need to retell the same episodes. Just have a sequel series pick up a number of years after the events of the original, a new X-Files has been opened with new agents, and they're investigating something that connects back to the original and then keeps going. That way we can still have Maulder and Scully do films, or pop up in the series or whatever.

No interest in a reboot whatsoever. I'm not opposed to remakes in general, even though they suck far more often than not, but the fact of the matter is, properties need to be 30+ years or more for a remake to have more relevancy than the original. Plus, any film or show that is successful is so because they've successfully captured lightning in a bottle, which isn't a formula that is capable of being repeated via formula.

Having said that I would much prefer a third film, perhaps a film

Having said that I would much prefer a third film, perhaps a film ending the primary Muldur/Scully story. I might then be open to a sequel series that continues the story, and since there were strong father/son ties in the series, maybe Fox's son could be the protagonist in a sequel series? But I think X-Files fans need and deserve closure with Fox and Dana before any new series could be considered.

Maybe a new third film ending the story of the original characters could dovetail into sequel series pilot with new characters? Has that ever been done before?

Fox doesn't seem too keen on making another The X-Files movie let alone a new series. Hopefully we'll get a new movie even though it's a straight to DVD/Blu Ray movie.

For the love of god make another movie.

I can see it now. The CW presents The X-Files with 2 20-somethings who look like they could barely be out of the academy with flawless features who will probably have sex before the end of the pilot and they will be trying to take down a conspiracy started by the new Smoking Man now called Dr. McSmoky-Dreamy -Steamy

Yes make another movie, but do not start a new! The X-Files is my favorite tv show of all time and i can guarantee a reboot will not have that genuine chemistry Duchovny and Anderson have. Either make another or let it die. Next you're going to tell me Twin Peaks is getting a reboot....
