Will Warner Brothers save The Dark Tower?

3 years agoby:

We thought it was going to get made, then Universal decided it couldn't commit to THE DARK TOWER.

It was a heavy load- three film installments and two television segments. Now it looks like Warner Brothers is thinking of stepping up. The studio bought the script by Akiva Goldsman (I AM LEGEND) and are paying him to polish it. Ron Howard is still set to direct possibly in the first part of 2013. This will also give Javier Bardem the chance to reattach himself to the lead role of Roland Deschain.

Last October, producer Brian Grazer stated that the television portion was getting set up over at HBO, which is the smartest move for the material. Movies would be awesome, but I really feel that this would make great TV as a full fledged series.

THE DARK TOWER centers on, "the last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers, with Deschain becoming humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an Old West feel."

If Warner Bros. decides to take on the project, do you think the studio will do it justice?

I was basically hired to do development on this, but the person didn't realize they already filled the position, I was gonna flip

He says in the book's preface that he was influenced by Lord or The Rings and Sergio Leone's (same as Clint Eastwood) Westerns, which is why I read it, and fucking loved it, and I never read books, at least normal books, I read comic books.

I should have made this before Howard gets a chance to ruin it.

Hugh Jackman? Ha, he is nothing like Clint Eastwood, wow! There will never be a guy like Clint again, just like there will never be a guy like AhNuld again, no one has the 1000 yard gaze like Clint. But from reading the books and after seeing the movie The Proposition, no one would be better for this than Guy Pearce, and the director for this would be either Sam Mendes or Alfonso Cuaron. No one argue with me, cause I am just right, trust me.

It's very obvious that Stephen King was inspired by Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name. Every fan of the book agrees that Clint Eastwood would have been perfect for the role if only he were much younger.

So does Hollywood not realize that they have a Clint Eastwood clone in their midst? His name is Hugh Jackman, and last I heard he was a much bigger draw at the box office than Javier Bardem.

Come on

Javier should have nothing to do with this. Javier has more ethnicity to him, which is a problem for this role. Also DO NOT LET RON HOWARD anywhere near this. Please. Just give it all to HBO, let them make a series out of it. It is truly the only way to do it any justice.

Warner Bros should be paying Goldsman to get away from the script!! Would be cool if they wedged Nolan into directing this though....

The series ends miserably...

Minor spoilers...

This series of books begins beautifully. The first three books are its very strongest and most engaging. Then the whole thing turns into a kind of typical Stephen King weird-fest, mixed with megalomaniacal autobiography. The ending was very anticlimatic.

I think the biggest failure for me though has to be that we never learn WHY Roland is seeking the Dark Tower!

If this is gonna get made, the script has GOT to change from the books on the motivation of Roland and

Read it again. It's obvious 'why' Roland is seeking the Dark Tower.

I am more worried about Howard/Goldsman and the watered down PG13 version they'll do, than of Bardem as Roland.
If this isn't done right I'm gonna personally add to my Enemy List every single person involved in the film.

Huge fan of the series and Javier Bardem, but this is a bad fit. Especially with Howard at the helm. I guess I should finally post this link for Timothy Olyphant!: [link]

Yah after reading all the hubub about this months ago I read the entire series. All I can say is Howard is not up to this task. And anyone who makes it is not going to do it justice.

That said, I think King is great with characters but terrible with action and this really does not need to be made.

Plus Bardem is totally not Roland, now Eastwood in his late 50's maybe.

IF this gets made it will be a train-wreck, its better if they just shelve it.

Yeah, but Eastwood is not in his late fifties, he is in his 80's, any suggestions for the real world?

I agree, Javier Bardem is such a horrible choice for Roland. There are so many great actors out there that are perfectly suited for this role.

Totally agree. Bardem as Roland is horrible. Since we can't retrieve Clint Eastwood circa 1962, I think Viggo Mortenson or Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be perfect for Roland.
