Will we be getting a standalone Batman film in 2019?

Jun. 19, 2014by: Sean Wist

Arguably the biggest shocker on DC's rumored slate of upcoming films was the absence of a standalone Batman film. There are not a lot of guaranteed money-makers within DC's line-up, so you'd think they'd want to get on that sooner rather than later. Regardless on the when, a Batman film is in the works, and we may even have a possible date and title.

"Inside sources" are claiming that 2019 is the year they're looking to debut the new Batman film, and a possible title may simply be, THE BATMAN. I don't think this comes as any great surprise, and if I were a betting man, I'd say that Affleck directing would be a viable option too. After all, why simply just cast the man who's responsible for directing two fantastic films (GONE BABY GONE, THE TOWN) and a recent Oscar winner (ARGO)? Affleck will soon be gearing up to write, direct and star in an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, LIVE BY NIGHT, which currently has an October 7, 2016 release date. I imagine filming on that will commence after BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE has wrapped. With JUSTICE LEAGUE having a rumored release date of May 2017, that looks to follow LIVE BY NIGHT. Perhaps serious development on "THE BATMAN" may begin after that? Until then, I'm sure Batman will get plenty of screen time in both BATMAN V SUPERMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE will be the next film to feature the dark knight, on May 6, 2016.

While it seems a bit soon for me (and I think that DC is just doing a laughably bad job of handling their film properties right now--I'm afraid I was on the "hate it" side of Man of Steel), I would be interested in this, if and only if Affleck directed, and they didn't go the "dark and gritty" route of the Nolan films. Much as I enjoyed those films, I'd love to see something NEW.

Assuming he does well in the other films, I'd love for him to direct a crime centered batman. I just think this new bats will need more explanation = a sooner solo film. Idk why they'd wait from even a financial POV

This is great news! It sounds like DC/WB has their cinematic universe all planed out now, and I'm excited about that.

Meh, let's see Man of Steel 2: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Rise of the Justice League: Aquaman goes to the aquarium to visit the in-laws first.

I don't understand why DC *NEEDS* a solo Batman film. Marvel didn't have ANY proven money makers when they started, and they're doing fine. What DC REALLY needs is a roster, not a proven money maker. Proven money makers give you Shoemaker just as often as they give you the Nolan trilogy. A *roster* gives you security. Good, bad, as long as you have something else to back it up it doesn't matter.

I don't see the problem, the fact that it's rumoured to be in 2019 tells me that they are planning on making a roster before Batman.

The fact is Batman is big, just like Iron Man is for Marvel now.

Two suggestions for Affleck & WB if they go the Bat Family route:
1) Jason Todd stays dead
2) Damien is given away as an infant, never to be seen again (like in the 80s comics) - or just doesn't exist at all.

Of course it's nothing but speculation at this point but I would love to see a Batman film where the Bat-family is a fully-formed entity and you've got Robin, Red Robin, Huntress, Nightwing, Red Hood, Catwoman, Batwoman et. al. all present and accounted for.

yes! after the dark knight, i was hoping for a Robin trilogy to reboot the series. part 1 is the story of dick grayson, part 2 is a flash forward to jason todd, and part 3 is another flash forward to tim drake where the villain is red hood.

Can you imagine?! Despite your feelings about Ben playing Batman... But if he was BEHIND the camera can you imagine a Town/Gone Baby Gone-esque Batman film?! Oh my God! I'm so there!

That is not a Batman film I'd ever want to see. Though I'm sure Affleck could directed a decent Batman film, and I'm sure he's smart enough to not go that route with it.

I want that film. Batman is a detective when you strip him of everything else. So I would love a Batman crime caper/thriller film with those same elements of grit and that tone. Just not as dark because it wouldn't fit well into this franchise and stick out like a sore thumb. Just the best of Affleck and the best of Batman. Maybe an Under The Red Hood type story. Or maybe... If this rumor is true, considering it's presumably going to be down the line in this franchise, why not a Frank

I got really excited for a solo Batman film...

because his solo adventures are the ones where he works best... and then I saw the source of the news - "Latino Review". Yeah, right. I call bullshit on this news

Affleck is signed on for 13 films. So I'm sure he'll be in damn near every DC film one way or another. Cameo here cameo there.

I really am tired of these studios and their schedules. I don't give a shit about what you plan to release in 2027 or whatever year. These dates are getting ridiculous. Besides, we won't be going to movies in a few years because of the inevitable zombie apocalypse. .duh!

Not going to pass judgement of Affleck until I see him in action however before people start complaining about his age, Downey Jr. is what, 49, and he is still kicking ass as Iron Man.

WHat would'nt Affleck be actually too old for a Batman by 2019. I think they should make a Batman movie back to back with S v B film and introduce Robin (Dick) and then build on that in sequel and move ahead a couple of years where Dick becomes Nightwing from where they go to the story where he wears The Bat Cowl.

Really looking forward to Affleck's interpretation of the character. Hopefully we get to see more of Bruce Wayne this time around then we previously did in Nolan's trilogy, because in my opinion Bruce Wayne is just as important as Batman when it comes to the story.

And I'm also really looking forward to Affleck directing his own Batman film and I really hope these new Batman films take advantage of the more supernatural aspect that the Burton films achieved because it would be a nice change

As for the title, I'm fine with 'The Batman' being the title for the first film, but I hope Gotham City is a title they consider for a future sequel.

Isn't the popular complaint that Nolan focused TOO MUCH on Bruce Wayne and didn't have enough Batman in his films? Personally I thought Nolan nailed both aspects of the character, but I'm pretty sure that if we see more of Bruce Wayne than we did in Nolan's trilogy, there won't be ANY Batman haha.

"Really looking forward to Affleck's interpretation of the character."

True statement. You are literally looking forward to The Batman in 2019.

''Hopefully we get to see more of Bruce Wayne this time around then we previously did in Nolan's trilogy,"

So... a Batman movie with no Batman whatsoever?

"because in my opinion Bruce Wayne is just as important as Batman when it comes to the story."

Apparently, this was Goyer and Nolan's opinion as well.

My guess is that magic won't exist at all in the Snyder movies. Not at all. I think we are going to see a separate DC Cinematic Universe that will crossover with the Flash and Arrow series on the CW and a Vertigo Cinematic Universe that will crossover with NBC's Constantine series. I can see Warners keeping them completely separate. Meanwhile, del Toro would be waiting to see if Warners will let him do a Constantine movie, presumably with the cast from the TV show.

True statement. You are hoping that the use Gotham in a Batman movie title. How about Batman and Robin: Gotham Knights. See what I did there?

Makes sense. I figured 2019 when that list got leaked and only went up to May 2018. That will be 7 years after TDKR and audiences will be used to Affleck in the cowl by that point.

Of course he will. At this point, they need to marry the dark and gritty vibe of the Nolan series with the more sci-fi/fantastical elements of the mythology. Probably re-introduce Mr. Freeze in a more serious and intimidating light.

The Batman: Dusk of Justice
The Batman: Evening of Justice
The Batman: Dark (K)night of Justice
I swear, making fun of that subtitle will never get old haha. Seriously though, this makes a lot of sense. It'll give Nolan's trilogy enough time to breathe, we'll already be familiar with Batfleck by then, and it possibly means that he'll be directing it himself. Interesting.
