Willem Dafoe and Udo Kier are two of a new batch of actors to join Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac
Another day, and NYMPHOMANIAC only gets better and better. I think. Sort of. Watching Lars von Trier is such a tough (or profound, depending on who you are) experience of late that the fact he has managed to once again gather such a spectacular cast only makes my feelings about what he does and how he does it all the more conflicted. That being said, I have zero issue with any and all private parts being shown, played with, or explored in his upcoming film NYMPHOMANIAC - just so long as they all stay in one piece. Do that, von Trier, and count me in. As it were.
Willem Defoe and Udo Kier (SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, DOGVILLE) are the latest additions to the story of a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac recounting fifty years worth of sexual exploration and experience to a man who saves her after she is beaten. While we don't know who Defoe and Kier will play or whether they'll be a part of said exploration and experience, we do know that they've come along to play their smaller supporting roles alongside Jean-Marc Barre (DOGVILLE), Caroline Goodall (SCHINDLER'S LIST), Kate Ashfield (SHAUN OF THE DEAD), Saskia Reeves (BUTTERFLY KISS), and Omar Shargawi (R).
While most of those actors may not be as well known over here in the US as they are in their native European countries, they in turn join an already established cast that now includes Charlotte Gainsbourg (ANTICHRIST), Stellan Skarsagard, Jamie Bell (KING KONG, DEFIANCE), Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Shia LaBeouf, and Connie Nielson (BROTHERS, GLADIATOR). The plan is still to shoot two full length versions of the script featuring hardcore shots for the one and softcore shots for the other. Whether both versions of the film will be released in conventional theaters remains to be seen, but will hopefully happen because we in the States (especially) need this sort of challenging art to be presented. People may get up and arms without bothering to consider what this project is or why it may exist, as it sadly can't be helped that our censors and ratings board have such a skewed sense of just what is harmful and what is not and why. For my own part, I've decided that I'm going to try my very best to catch both versions of the film - if nothing else, I trust Defoe and Skarsgard And I accept that if I have to live in a world where sexual discussion and expression and exploration is somehow still scandalous after however many thousands of years of human history, then it's the least I can do to advocate for a frank artistic confrontation of that state of being and support it in whatever way I can.
But what about you? What are you thinking these days regarding NYMPHOMANIAC?
Kate Ashfield is doing a sort of indescribably sexy thing with this photoshoot
