William Fichtner teases his role as The Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot

10.22.2013

Veteran actor William Fichtner has been around the block and then some, starring in flicks like ARMAGEDDON, CONTACT, HEAT, BLACKHAWK DOWN, THE DARK KNIGHT, etc., and has proven to have a great presence to anything he attaches himself to. However, when he was cast as Eric Sachs aka The Shredder in the new TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES reboot, fans reacted less enthusiastically. The character's name didn't match (the original Shredder was Oroku Saki) or race (he was Japanese), so the outcry was rampant. I'm not familiar with an Eric Sach's version of the character (misdirection perhaps?), but apparently that's the name of this version, so it looks like a new direction for the walking cheese grater, which Fichtner commented to THN about with much enthusiasm:

“What I read about Eric Sachs in the script was great, and then how the character has been moulded and changed when we started filming has become something really quite remarkable in terms of what we’ve seen before of the character.”

When asked about the look of the Turtles in the reboot, Fichtner gave another enthusiastic, although cryptic remark, saying:

“They are some messed up mutant turtles!”

I'm not really sure what to make of that comment, although I'm sure you guys can figure out a way to have a field day with it. As a fan of TMNT in all its many formats (some more than others), I'm hopeful that we can be surprised with something cool from the reboot, but like many of you I am also apprehensive. I'll likely catch it in the theater regardless, to be honest, but that doesn't mean I'll be happy about it. But I sure as hell hope I will be.

Jonathan Liebesman's TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES is set for August 8, 2014

The name 'Eric Sachs' is undoubtedly derived from Oroku Saki, only 'americanized'. Heck, is 'Oroku Saki' even an authentic Japanese name? I kinda don't think so.
Fichtner would probably make a good villain, but I was hoping for someone who can actually do martial arts like Ray Park, or even (heheh I'm chuckling as I wrote this) Van Damme.

Wait wait wait, what do you mean "Eric Sachs"? Who the hell is that?? Where's Oroku Saki?! That's The Shredder's goddamn name! The hell is this?!

TELL me there's some twist and Fichtner is playing some stand-in Shredder or pawn to the real deal...

That said, I approve of his last quote. One thing I loved about the original film was how they used the puppets to do some wonderful gross-out effects scenes, and I hope they go back to that spirit in this film

You couldn't be more wrong in your comment below in my opinion. I've recently watch the first two seasons of the show and it's fantastic on every level. The animation, humor, style, voice acting. I agree the comic is good, but without the show the Turtles never would have sky rocketed the way they have because of he comic.

This casting is pure crap...William Fichtner is wrong for this role...what makes me so mad, is that Michael Bay is allowed to messed up the origin of the TMNT because he wants to express his view instead...WTF...dude get off your high ego ridden horse and back the heck up...these clasic comic/cartoon stories should be protected...why cant someone fight for the fanboys, the geeks, etc?? The biggest thing is casting and William Fichtner clearly is a horrible choice!!

I don't know about "protected"...yeah the comic was badass, but the show was pure shit. We loved it because we were kids, but watch it again today and prepare to cringe. And honestly, I don't know if I *want* someone to fight for this franchise. All the great pro-geek directors I can think of, I'd rather see doing other things. Sure, Bay made a mess of Transformers, but at least there's ILM's talent to appreciate, which you're sort of forced to thank Bay for since he pushed for them. And

And it could've been worse: they could have had Ratner do it. Or Schumacher. Yikes.

Anyway... Bay is not directing this one... remember? He is producing the movie, and fighting with chinese agressors in the set of TF4. So he is probably not very much into this production and th final result.

It is nice to see Fichtner getting same larger roles like lead villains (this and Lone Ranger). However, I'm still on the fence about this whole movie. I really want another great TMNT movie.

I'm not a turtles fan (though I really enjoyed the last animated movie effort - good movie!)...have almost no knowledge on it. That said, with regard to a white Shredder...perhaps they're going all Ra's al Ghul, Batman Begins on us.

Everything I keep seeing and hearing about this film is not sitting well with me. I don't understand, why was it so hard for them to just keep things as they were with the comics/cartoon? What is this need to change the origin and characters? At least TMNT kept the original storyline, while bringing us fresh content. This is just bulldozing the franchise.

How the fuck is this guy going to be shredder. Shredder in the comics and Cartoon is clealy of Japanese Heritage. Why would a white guy from NY just be walking around in that getup.

I really want to like this movie, but everything I hear is making be believe it will be terrible.

I'm okay with re-imagining / tweaking the origins, but if you change too much, you piss off your initial fanbase.

IMO, they should have adapted the current IDW comics. The origin has to do with the turtles/Splinter being reincarnated from feudal Japanese warriors. Very good stuff. Different than the original story, but a very awesome take on TMNT.

You're goddamn right it's messing the history. I think if you read the other comments there are plenty of people that have a problem with this casting.

This is hilarious, people go off at William Fichtner for being Shredder but at the same time accept Michael B Jordan as Johnny Blaze. So its not ok for a white guy to play a japanese character but it is ok for a Black guy to be a white character what happened to equality? Have we all got to be over sensitive to the casting of a black guy. Or shall we just stick to portraying the characters as they were written? Sorry for the rant but fairs fair. I personally would like keep the characters to

I wonder if Captain America's costume will be redesigned with a burka? Comics are already changing characters sexual orientation whats next?

The key difference is that Johnny Blaze's race isn't a factor in his origin story, the Shredder's is. He's Japanese, and he's Japanese for a reason. It's part of his backstory and feeds into part of the reasons why he becomes the Shredder. That is why people are so up in arms about this.

Storm, not Blaze. and Freeden - you're wrong - Johnny is Sue Storm's brother, his race is a factor in the origin of the story. If she is white, then he should be too.

And I'm not for either casting.

Because I like William Fichtner, I won't go red here. But more than any other bit of casting for this movie, this one irks me. The Shredder is supposed to be Japanese. Even worse, they got an actor I like and want to root for in a role that I am having serious trouble accepting him for. People have been fussing about Megan Fox, but at least she fits the superficial requirements of the character.

Fichtner is great in most things he's in (I just found out that he was the offscreen marriage therapist in Mr. and Mrs. Smith) but I really do wish they went with Oroku Saki and had someone like Ken Watanabe or Will Yun Lee in the part. "Eric Sachs" sounds like just a romanization of the name.
