Writer William Monahan offers his ideas for a sequel to The Departed

10.17.2011

Will a sequel to THE DEPARTED ever happen? Probably not. But if they did decide to make a follow up, where would it go?

Screenwriter William Monahan offered his idea on where the script would go in an interview with Collider. Personally, I really don't care if they make a sequel or not. If they left it alone that would be fine by me.

Collider: Any news on a Departed sequel? Do you think it will ever happen?

William Monahan: No. I think Warner Bros. would have liked to see a synopsis of it. I donít do synopses and I donít pitch. Personally, I donít know if itís ever going to happen. I know the film, Iíve got the film in my head. Even if everybody didnít come back, which they could in the film as Iíve configured it, it would be a hell of a paycheck for somebody to write. The film would have to be absolutely superb.

C: Would you be in the future but go back to the past to tie it all together?

Monahan: My idea actually is to set the film before, during and after the action of the first film, which I think would be extraordinary. If those guys want to cough up the dough, we can do it any time.

C: Is it one of these films thatís dependent on you seeing the original Departed or can it exist on its own?

Monahan: Essentially, in the middle section of the thing Iíve intended, youíd see actions that take place during the original Departed, but arenít on screen in the original Departed. There would be off-screen things that occur at that point in the story. But it would work seamlessly as a movie of its own.

Also Monahan is almost done with the script for SIN CITY 2. As far as any spoilers on future projects this is all the scribe had to say:

"I think they [the fans] should be excited that thereís a second Frank Miller movie coming out with Robert doing it, because Robertís excited and Iím certainly excited to be able to work on this material. Itís going like a rocket. "

Oh, so "your" idea is sort of similar to someone else's ideas for 'Infernal Affairs 2' and '3', you thieving hack?

The Departed doesn't need a sequel. It's fine with just the one.

And I thought originally the sequel was going to follow Walhberg's character as he investigated higher into the crime lords....which would be played by DeNiro.

Isn't Infernal Affairs 2 a full-on prequel anyways?

dont say its your idea when its probably a direct remake of infernal affairs 2 with the same script. This guy is bullshit if he thinks we believe its his idea. It would be cool to see, but I already have because infernal affairs 2 is in my opinion the best of the series

After the total misfire that is/was London Boulevard, I don't blame him for wanting to go back to The Departed. That being said, the sequel idea 100% fucking stupid IMO. Thankfully, Monahan is apparently above studio pitches (even for stupid ill-advised sequels), so we won't have to worry about it.

Why don't they just go off of the sequal that was already made? I mean, The Departed was ripped off of Infernal Affairs and that movie was part of an excellent trilogy. Thought it would be common sense to do that.

I was surprised that his idea wasn't:

"So we just film a graveyard for two hours."

Lame

"Offers" his ideas. Reading that interview, I know nothing about his ideas for the sequel.
