The 25 Anniversary Edition of Willow coming to Blu-ray in March 2013

Dec. 13, 2012by:

I friggin love WILLOW. What a great movie. Back in 1988, LORD OF THE RINGS caliber fantasy was a rarity and WILLOW was the biggest budget epic we had seen. I remember sitting in the theater with my dad thinking that this was going to be the next STAR WARS.

In retrospect, I may have overhyped the movie a little, but it still holds up for me as an exciting adventure movie. I love Madmartigan and everything about the movie. Sure, it was kind of scary for a little kid, but it was also exciting. When the announcement came today that the film would be released on Blu-ray on March 12, 2013, I immediately looked to place my pre-order.

The fully remastered film looks awesome in the Blu-ray trailer and the chance to catch deleted scenes is too good to pass up! Warwick Davis' personal video diary is included as is an all new feature on the visual effects in the movie.

Plot: When young Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis; Harry Potter franchise) finds an abandoned baby girl, he learns she is destined to end the reign of the wicked Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh; “Upstairs, Downstairs”). In order to protect the child, Willow must team up with a rogue swordsman (Val Kilmer; Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) and overcome the forces of darkness in the ultimate battle of good versus evil!

Despite not being the massive success George Lucas and Ron Howard envisioned, WILLOW was a groundbreaking adventure that paved the way for THE LORD OF THE RINGS. I am very excited to see WILLOW next year and I hope it sparks a new interest in the movie as well.

Check out the full breakdown of features on the disc as well as the cover art below.

Special Features
WILLOW is presented in widescreen with 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio (Lossless). Special features include:
    ●    NEW  Willow: Deleted Scenes with Ron Howard
    ●    NEW  Willow: An Unlikely Hero  Personal Video Diary of Warwick Davis
    ●    The Making of an Adventure with an all new introduction from Ron Howard
    ●    From Morf to Morphing with an all new introduction from Dennis Muren
    ●    Matte Paintings
    ●    Easter Egg

Extra Tidbit: Anyone read the CHRONICLES OF THE SHADOW WAR book sequels to WILLOW?

LOVE Willow! One of my favorite movies as a kid and still one of my favorites to this day. Dropping this in my Amazon Pre-Order cart as soon as it shows up.

What a classic.
What's really sad though is that a lot of this movie feels more realistic than The Hobbit and LOTR, despite the advances in vfx. Why? Because they actually went outside, to real locations to shoot instead of in some fake looking studio with fake lighting and fake looking sets.

Yeah, there are moments in the LOTR Trilogy that look kind of chinsy, like from an episode of the Hercules/Xena TV series or something.

What were some of the other fantasy/sword and sorcery films of the 80s?

Off the top of my head I can think of Legend, Krull, Neverending Story, Dragonslayer, Excalibur, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Beastmaster, Conan...others?

I haven't seen this movie since I was really young (probably about 5 or 6!) so I don't remember anything about this movie other than loving it back then. I've been meaning to give it another watch so this is a great excuse to.

I recommend you all "Size Matters Not", an autobiography by Warrick Davies. A very interesting book focusing on his private life and movie career as well, with some sarcastic humor. His most famous roles include Wicket in Return of the Jedi, Williow himself, the Leprichaun, Professor Flitwick and Griphok in the Harry Potter movies.
