Wizard of Oz to be re-imagined by Timur Bekmambetov for SyFy as a fantasy-action miniseries

The Wizard of Oz

How many of you liked SyFy's plan to turn 12 MONKEYS into a series? Ok, you three come with me because you're going to be the only ones that think this other SyFy series based on a film is a good idea. Well, sure THE WIZARD OF OZ was a book first but you know what I mean.

Deadline has an exclusive that WANTED and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER director Timur Bekmambetov will executive produce (and possibly direct) a re-imagining of THE WIZARD OF OZ called WARRIORS OF OZ. Deadline says the miniseries will follow a modern day warrior who is sent into the future to a post-apocalyptic Oz. There he teams up with three other warriors named Heartless, Brainless and Coward to battle an evil wizard.

Sigh.

Does this sound appealing to anyone? You might think we've been harsh on SyFy about these series, but really can you blame us? The idea comes from Bekmambetov and it sounds like he was tripping balls while watching THE WIZARD OF OZ and DEADLIEST WARRIOR. With so many excellent shows on television it's obvious that there is talent out there that want to create original programing with original ideas, so this just sounds lazy. I would say WARRIORS OF OZ might be at least nice to look at visually with Bekmambetov onboard, but on a SyFy budget I doubt it will.

No news on when WARRIORS OF OZ will begin to air. Hopefully never.
