Wolfgang's Paprika?

08.11.2009

PAPRIKA animated film poster

Wolfgang Petersen's been pretty quiet since his 2005 disaster flick POSEIDON under-performed at the Box-Office, so like many of his fellow filmmakers he's turning to the land of the rising sun for inspiration.

According to the folks of Moviehole, the veteran director is circling a live-action adaptation of the 1993 Japanese novel PAPRIKA, which has already spawned a manga and inevitable animated film in 2006. The story follows a race to stop a techno-criminal who is using stolen dream-penetrating technology for mind control.

No official confirmation has been forwarded for the project, so in the meantime Petersen is still officially attached to UPRISING about earth rebels fighting off an alien invasion. Again.

Extra Tidbit: I keep asking myself how I'll feel the day a remake is announced for Petersen's ENEMY MINE. I still don't know if I'd be peed of favorably curious.

I just can't see it. Paprika's one of the few anime movies I've seen, and while I'm unfamiliar with the novel, I can't quite picture how something like this could work in life-action, especially since Petersen doesn't really have any history of working in fantasy (lest you count "Troy").

Petersen is an okay director (some of his films, great, others, not so much), but he is a terrible choice for this material.

Petersen?

A live-action Paprika film is an iffy subject to begin with, but it sounds more like Terry Gilliam or Michael Gondry territory to me.

dumb idea

It would have to be severely altered to attract American audiences, and then it would not be what it's supposed to be, so they should make something INSPIRED by Paprika.

Don't Forget Ender's Game

I think he's technically still attached to that, even though it's been stuck in development hell for the petter part of a decade.
