Strike Back below!
by: Dave Davis Jun. 13, 2009

While some (like myself) have hoped that the droopy-lidded, seemingly disinterested Kirsten Dunst would not be returning as love interest Mary Jane Watson in the next SPIDER-MAN movie(s), people behind the film have insisted she'll be back. Damn.

One place she won't be playing the role, however, is on Broadway. As has long been expected, actress Evan Rachel Wood (THE WRESTLER, THIRTEEN) has worked out possible scheduling conflicts and will definitely play Peter Parker's squeeze/damsel in distress on stage for the musical SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, scheduled to open in early 2010.

The webbed suit currently remains unoccupied -- the producers had pursued Wood's ACROSS THE UNIVERSE co-star Jim Sturgess for the part, but so far the show still needs a singing, swinging main man.

The "circus rock-n-roll drama" comes from director Julie Taymor (TITUS, FRIDA) with U2's Bono and The Edge providing the tunage. Spidey will supposedly clash with Green Goblin, Carnage, Electro, Rhino, Swarm and Lizard, but the main villain is a new invention named Swiss Miss, whose costume consists of rotating knives and swirling corkscrews.

Dunst
I'm satisfied with Dunst in Spider-Man. I've always liked her and although shes done better acting it by no means is bad enough to replace her outright. Not a big fan of changing actors in movies unless it really...really needs changed.

She should have been Mary Jane in the movies. Either her or Sophia Bush.

Besides, the movies were flawed beyond characters.

Am I the only person in the world who thought Kirsten Dunst was great as MJ Watson, and will happily welcome her return?

... i totally agree with you on kirsten. you said it all and more.

people should watch her other movies and not judge her on just spider-man.

She is talented no doubt, but the MJ character doesnt do much in the movies, except get captured and scream.

But raimi should REALLY concentrate on Parker's character - stop making him such a idiotic LOSER !! He's...

You're right, it would suck if they recast Michael Caine for Batman 3. But that's only cause Caine is awesome. Katie Holmes and Kirsten Dunst are as talentless as they come.

Recasting Rachel Dawes was one of the many problems with the dark knight
project 86, I completely agree with you about continuity. That's an important aspect of any sequel and it should be more of a priority.

Speaking of the new Batman franchise, I thought it was fucking ridiculous that Maggie Gyllenhaal replaced Katie Holmes. If anything, they should have written that character out. Because, I was constantly distracted everytime Maggie Gyllenhaal was onscreen because she clearly wasn't Rachel Dawes. And Katie Holmes had way more chemistry with Christian Bale but that's besides the point. Also, that movie just plain sucked in my opinion anyway. It took itself so seriously and everyone was praising it as a gritty and realistic movie but it was nothing more than a live action cartoon with cardboard characterizations. I in particular HATED the laughable transition of Harvey Dent into Two-Face and Heath Ledger's annoying portrayal of The Joker and how all of his plans worked perfectly and how he was glamorized (but I blame the writing for that too and the directing, Nolan was so in love with the joker it was cringe worthy to watch).

I was hoping this was about Evan Rachel Wood being cast in the film. That would have been great news; she'd fit the part better for sure.

Kirsten Dunst is cool in my book
I don't really go to Broadway shows but this is one that I would consider checking out.

Kirsten Dunst is a very good actress. The material just wasn't there for her in the Spidey flicks. I've been saying all along that they should have went the fun party girl route with her character and Dunst would have been PERFECT. She could have played it just like her character in Crazy/Beautiful (but without overdoing the substance abuse). I thought she was great in that movie and it's ridiculous that the movie version of MJ is not a party girl.

I think a lot of people jumped ship after Spidey 3. I actually think they didn't capture the comics ever in this series so Spidey 3 was okay in my opinion.

And I actually thought the writing for Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2 was the worst in the series. Raimi made him such a loser who couldn't catch a break and it was painful to watch.

I actually liked that in Spider-Man 3, Raimi had a great role reversal with Peter and MJ. This time, MJ was the one who was having sh!tty luck and everything was going wrong for her. And Peter was becoming successful and praised.

I like Sam Raimi, Evil Dead is one of my favorite movies, but his work on the Spider-Man series has been only okay in my opinion.

And it really depresses me that Kirsten Dunst is not in better movies. She is capable of doing excellent acting. I remember back in the summer of '01, she was a rising star, hosted the MTV movie awards (not that that means much), and I was very caught up in her, having high hopes for her career. And it hasn't happened yet. Sure, she was in the Spider-Man movies but that didn't allow her to really act. Maybe one day. But, the constant bashing of her is ridiculous in my opinion. I want to see this girl come out on top and wish people would give her a break.

The funny thing is that people who really hate her are the hardcore Spidey fans. I think they never really forgave her for being unenthusiastic about the role, in interviews, and for not fitting the model-look of the comic MJ. Any other names I've heard are about ten years younger than Tobey Maguire.

And when they try to reboot the franchise, in say five years? Those two would be perfect so we'll have to wait.

Dunst is OK
It's just that there isn't much she can do with a poorly written role; basically all she does is moan, scream and get kidnapped by the main villain.

Dunst is a bad actress. She always seems bored and doesnt seem to display emotion very well. However..if they replaced her Id have an issue with the continuity of the films, and that means more to me at this point.

The musical should be interesting to say the least.

Interesting concept. I hope a DVD of a performance is released or something. I'd like to see that.

I don't get the hate for Dunst. I truly don't. She was fine in all three movies imo. Its the way the character was written in Spidey 3 that was the problem.
