World War Z, the trilogy?

Jan. 3, 2012by: Alex Riviello

Fans of Max Brooks's incredible novel "World War Z" were sad to hear how much the upcoming film adaptation is changing things, turning it into much more of CONTAGION-styled thriller. But maybe two more films could help things?

Dropped into a L.A. Times article about Brad Pitt's career is the tidbit that WORLD WAR Z is being looked at as a potential trilogy by Paramount Pictures.

For Pitt, the big sci-fi thriller also represents his strongest bid to have a big film franchise of his own, which might be viewed as the missing piece of his career jigsaw puzzle. Forster and Paramount Pictures each view WORLD WAR Z as a trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism of, say, Damon's Jason Bourne series tethered to the unsettling end-times vibe of AMC's "The Walking Dead."

This will all depend on the performance of the film, of course. In it, Pitt plays a United Nations fact-finder and family man that races around the world trying to find the origin of the zombie pandemic (Spoiler- it's in China.) Not sure how sequels could possibly work for the material unless of course the world gets overrun? The book, after all, was set well after the events of the zombie apocalypse, and was more of a historical reference than anything. Will they have to change it completely in order to leave it open for sequels?

WORLD WAR Z is set for release next December.

Extra Tidbit: Daniel H. Wilson's awful "Robopocalypse" is a blantant ripoff of "World War Z".

Boo-hoo, little bitches. Here's a tip...if you don't want anything about a movie to be "spoiled" for you, then DON'T frequent movie news sites like this one!

To anyone who is upset over the "spoiler"...

Go buy a copy of the book and read the first 5 pages. There, it is now no longer spoiled for you.
WWZ is not about a quest to find the origin of the disease. It is about the survivors of the zombie war, the parts they played in the war, and what they did to survive. In fact, if the movie synopsis given in the article is accurate, then that's actually quite a story change from the book. You should be getting upset over THAT.

And again the trilogy excuse to condone eventual sequels. Do they actually make movies these days that aren't supposed to be trilogies?

Hey guys thats not really a spoiler. Its from one of the first chapters of the book. I'm just going to assume they are going to change that as well in the movie.

That said. I can see a trilogy out of this. The book was broken up into a few parts. What happened before and leading up to world war z, what happened during world war z, and then the aftermath.

GOD DAMNIT on the spoiler...

A spoiler isn't dropped right in the middle of a sentence. WTF? That was a pretty shitty thing to do.

"trilogy that would have the grounded, gun-metal realism"
How pray-tell do you show a realistic zombie apocalypse with a bullshit PG-13 rating.
Now some unfuckable cunt will come along and say ratings don't determine movie quality - yes, cunt, you're right but there's no fucking way that even the most liberal interpretation of the PG-13 will allow for a "realistic" depiction of the dead rising and feasting on the living. And, no, fuckhead, The Walking Dead would not be rated PG-13; it would

And one "cunt" will always, really ALWAYS just come up with his fucking rating-monologue, ´cause hes got nothing else to say on any subject matter!

Sin you have such a problem with my complaint Preston_79 I'll elaborate.

I too read fast, infact I scan read things like this so I've looking at it very quick. I barely seen the spoiler warning and my eyes took in the china part automatically. I don't care if you find this out early in the book or not, the fact it that the writer was very careless and arrogant by putting it in there.

Of course its china. Every freaking disease and virus comes from China. At least thats what Hollywood and the government makes us believe.

Seriously..

who the fuck gets mad at them finding out the origin of a virus is in China?

Is that really going to make or break you with the film?

It's not like the writer wrote its Billy Loomis' mom or the kid sees dead people.

ITS FUCKING CHINA. STOP BEING A BUNCH OF VAGINAS.

This site will always be my favorite site to get news related material. Poor writing? Lick a taint.

I really liked this book so I am hoping for the movie to be good and if it must be trilogy to have the story told than I am all for it.

I read pretty fast, but I can stop on a dime. Not sure what people are complaining about. Maybe will power is your real problem. A carrot gets dangled in front of some people and they just can't resist. The whole, I was reading so fast I couldn't stop before I read the spoiler, is a bunch of bullshit.

Why the hell do writers think I want to know that the virus started in China? I personally try to go out of my way to know as little as I can about the plots of movies I want to see, and I'm sick of reading these stupid ass "minor spoilers" here. Granted it's minor and hopefully I'll forget I ever read it, but I just don't understand who that sentence is benefitting? People who read the book already know that, and people who haven't don't want to know it, so what's the fucking point.

If they integrate further stories from the book (like the pilot lost in the woods), I'd be down for a trilogy. Though personally I'd have preferred a single mockumentary film in the style of, say, District 9.
Oh, and "It started in China" is hardly a spoiler.

Rip-off

Robopocalypse definitely ripped off the format of WWZ. No doubt about it. That said, I could see where Spielberg could turn it into a good movie. It didn't really rip off any specific plot points from WWZ; at least none that I can recall. Tonally, definitely similar, but you could say that about almost any post-apocalyptic narrative. WWZ is the far superior book, but I can see both being successfully translated to screen. Robopocalypse may even have an easier transition given WWZ's depth and

Looking forward to both on film.

"...the big sci-fi thriller..."
Yeah, nothing says "big sci-fi thriller" like, uh, zombies eating people.

Love it

I would be so much happier if it was a trilogy. The book is so damn good. Please dont make it a outbreak/contaigen type and stick to the DAMN BOOK BRAD.

Yes, thank you! This film just might be worth seeing, if it is only the first part of three. 'cause I've been worried that it will turned into generic "must stop bad things" thriller, if the main focus is in trying to stop the epidemic.

Besides, the novel has too much going on, too much depth to be just one movie. I always said, that the best option would have been HBO-style miniseries.

It wasn't a spoiler, the book is set well after the end of the zombie war and pretty much the first few pages of the book talk about how it originated from china and black market organ donors.

just because its information in the first couple pages of the book, doesn't mean it isn't a spoiler

It is at worst a small spoiler because the cause of the Zombie infection is NEVER spelled out in the novel. It seems to initially appear in China, and is spread through black market organs to some extent, but there is no specific reason given. In the novel the Z infection just sort of begins...

I'm looking forward to this film, however I must hope that the spoiler that the writer of the article mentioned i false as it was a pretty inept thing to write.

Firstly, why even post a spoiler in the article, and why one with barely any warning. Joblo just gets worse and worse with idiotic writng staff.

I came here years ago because AICN had turned into such a shitty site. I hate to think of going to yet another place, but I agree...this was yet another nail in the coffin :(

thanks for the spoiler

what was the point of that? With the terrible writing here & the increasing number of annoying adds, seems like firstshowing.net will be my first stop for news from now on
