Worlds are colliding in the first trailer for Lars Von Trier's Melancholia

Apr. 8, 2011by: Mike Sampson

I'll be honest - I didn't know much about MELANCHOLIA, Lars Von Trier's follow-up to the wackiness of ANTICHRIST. But looking at the first trailer for the film - which stars Kirsten Dunst, Keifer Sutherland and Charlotte Gainsbourg - it could be his most commercial work yet.

Of course I say that because of the obvious sci-fi undertones as the film centers around the fear that a planet hiding behind the sun is on a collision course with Earth. Or as Von Trier himself puts it, "a beautiful movie about the end of the world." If that's not enough to get you interest, I saw some Kirsten Dunst bewbage. (Well, I did!)

MELANCHOLIA doesn't have a US release date yet but there are rumors of a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. And I'll be willing to bet that all this talk of a "commercial" film from Von Trier is masking some third act weirdness that will take us all by surprise. Take a look below and see if it's something you're interested in checking out.

That trailer was better than 10 mg of Ambian and warm glass of milk.

I've kinda been anticipating this one. The premise sounds good, but the trailer...well it was kinda boring. Let's hope I'm wrong.

Finally a movie that dares to be a good novel - human interests set against the backdrop of outlandish science fiction, while both facets are taken 100% seriously.

I couldn't even pretend to know about Von Tier as I've never seen any of his films but from what I've heard about them he seems to make movies to the extreme. From what I heard of Anti-christ he goes to the extreme trying to offend and disgust people. So this movie and title is an extreme melodrama. I mean the name "Melancholia" is ridiclous. This could either be a disaster or a brilliant film. I like the concept enough and he seems like the type to go wild with the possibilities.

I think it sounds interesting, but needs a new name.

I love this concept but I'm a bit unsure of Dunst.. she's been hit or miss throughout most of her career.

I'm sure this will make $0.00 profit

Could this look a little more melodramatic please? It looks like a film major at some super-trendy overly "artistic" school made it to impress a girl.

I like the "planet behind the sun" concept.... and that is about it.

I want to see this for a few reasons.
-I've "liked" all his other films that I've seen. (By that I mean I thought they were well made and interesting, but damn are they downers.)
-The cast.
-The premise.
-But most importantly, when I first heard of this movie, I read that von Trier said that all his other movies had ended happily, and this is his first film with an unhappy ending. I'm very interested in what he considers an unhappy ending.
Hopefully my heart and soul can take it.

Interesting actor ensemble; father son Skarsgard, Dunst and Sutherland. In a von Trier film this ensemble should be gold.

I loved Antichrist

In the beginning of the trailer, this did indeed look more "commercial", but that suddenly changed when Kristen Dunst is nude in front of a bathtub and a woman is getting fucked on a golf course.
