Worthington on Titans

09.02.2009

I'm not exactly sure where this sweeping feeling of anti-Sam Worthington sentiment has come from as of late. It's something to do with the fact that our first impression of him was in TERMINATOR SALVATION and despite of that, he's been handed blockbuster franchises on a silver platter despite not yet “proving himself.”

I don’t buy into that school of thought. Worthington was the best thing about SALVATION, and I’m glad to see him headlining AVATAR and CLASH OF THE TITANS, as it’s nice to see a fresh face onscreen every now and again. Though AVATAR is the bulk of his press these days, he recently sat down with MTV on the set of TITANS to talk a little bit about how the film does (and does not) stay true to the original.

"What these guys and Louis [Leterrier] have set out to do is raise the richter [scale] to 11, in the sense of, the scorpions are the size of dump trucks, Medusa is a lot quicker and a lot more scarier, and the whole world itself is… big and epic in scope."

In the original film, there were also giant scorpions and a Medusa battle, but judging from the props they’re using in this iteration; it should blow the old film out of the water (which shouldn’t be that hard because frankly, the original wasn't that great). But there’s no reason you can’t remake a shitty project into a good one. I’ll be damned if I can think of any examples off the top of my head, but I’m sure it’s happened.

idiocracy

if any of you guys had grown up in the early 80s then you might have a different take on it. to say CotT wasn't a great film is to be spoiled on cgi injected films that are complete sensory overload. the animation while not spectacular (even for the time) did convey a certain kitsch quality to it that made it kool as hell. medusa was creepy and the characters all had an old school quality to them that (in my mind) made it a classic.

I typically loathe remakes, but I always thought that The Clash of the Titans would/could be a great remake if done right. Looks like it's on track to kick some ass. :-)

As far as the original CotT, I have only seen the end with the Kraken, but I did enjoy it for what it was. I am really excited to see this, since I love Greek mythology. However, I am still waiting for the one remake to blow me out of the water. Hopefully by the time this comes out I will have seen the original and can compare the two. But as far as amazing remakes go, hopefully the new Nightmare on Elm Street will take home the gold

What are you talking about?

The original Clash was the f**king bomb! It was pretty damn good for its time. The story of Perseus was always one of my fav Greek Myth stories. How can you top Sir Lawrence as Zeus. Back the F**k up!

Old vs New

Well I enjoyed the original. And still do. As far as it being remade. I love it. Louis Leterrier is awesome and Sam Worthington is ready for it. Clash of the Titans should be fantastic. Looking forward for a trailer.

It is true, Worthington was the best of T4. And this movie has me interested, because Lawrence Kasdan wrote it.

the departed????

Sorry, but "the Departed" is better than "Internal Affairs"? Are you serious? Its a 1 to 1-copy, with no extra thought, no singles extra piece of imagination or any single new idea. But I guess its always better than to watch a great foreign and have to read the subtitles, geez!!! And back to topic: Letterier is a great action-director and Worthington a convincing leading man so bring it on!

You're an idiot, Infernal Affairs was good at best and The Departed murdered it by comparison. Having seen the inevitable comparison threads ever since The Departed came out, you're in the vast minority. Even the Asians said TD was better.

Yeah, I kind of have to agree with a lot of people here and say Worthington's character and story was the most interesting thing in T4.

This remake is one of the few I'm genuinely okay with the idea of remaking it.

"... which shouldnt be that hard because frankly, the original wasn't that great..."

Ok, what the fuck Tassi?! You don't speak for all of us here man. I know Tagia Romero and I both love the hell out of classic Harryhausen films, so there's at least two of us here that feel the original is great. However, I am very much looking forward to this remake. That doesn't mean that I think the original absolutely needed an update, though. The original forever stands as one of Harryhausen's best works.

Well, that's the thing. I didn't state I was speaking for everyone (notice my second reply actually keeps counts of how many think the original is a great movie--I do this in a half-satirical manner to point out that we are in the slight minority on this site apparently). I'm open to everyone's opinion as that's how I discuss things on the forums. I'm open to everyone's opinion as that's how I discuss things on the forums. Most regulars here know I don’t judge a film on its special effects, in fact I’m quite critical when it comes down to narrative. However, what exactly are the drawbacks that hinder this film in your mind? Nobody has stated this yet. A few posters have said, "It hasn't aged well," or, "it wasn't good to begin with," but WHY?! Is it the pacing? Is it the performances? Is it the climax? What turns you off? A little more detail and explanation would be nice instead of everyone getting behind the latest remake and discounting the original simply because it's from a different era. In my opinion, the original is GREAT. It features relatively decent acting, a great score, a tight script full of mythology and monsters, fun action scenes, and, yes, terrific Harryhausen effects.

Hey, just because the effects were cool in the original doesn't mean the film itself was great which it wasn't, and you don't speak for all of us either man.

T4 was ok...at best. Worthington was pretty good and I'm looking forward to this to see what the can do with the effects and monsters. I wonder how the will do the Kracken. but its not going to even come close to the original. i fucking love that film as cheesy at it is.

This film could easily be thrilling and a step above the original, but I will never forgive Leterrier for doing such a shitty job with a premise and cast as amazing as 'Danny the Dog'.

I'm gonna go with Night of the Living Dead (1990). The original was good and creepy and new, but now it's not new. And the remake just works better, in my opinion.

And I don't mean things that are "old" are bad, I just mean, in scare factor terms and pacing, the remake was superior.

This is just a case of...

people not liking to be TOLD who the next big thing is going to be... Remember Gretchen Mol (I know, right? Who?) She's the chick in "Rounders" that quickly made the cover of Vanity Fair (solo, mind you) and then later among the likes of Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman! They publicized the shit out of her and where is she now?

That said, I happen to like Worthington, and I'm slightly biased having met him, but he's a good guy and I agree that he was the best thing going about Salvation -

Miracle on 34th Street was better than the original. King Kong was a little too long, but way better than the original. War of the Worlds was better than the "original" (I put that in quotations because the original movie is wildly inaccurate). I'm sure there are others, but I can't recall right now.

On every single one of these, you are completely wrong. War of the Worlds (Cruise Edition) was a disgustingly hideously poor movie, full of cliches and bad attempts at emotional moments. No one cheered when his son was alive at the end, most people hissed.

Good news. It just pains me to see a Greek-mythos-based flick like this being made when they could have made a great flick outta' God Of War (best game I've ever played). That would have been EPIC!

There are many remakes better than the originals. Most agree that the remake of LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was better as a movie than the original, visceral qualities lessened or not. THE ITALIAN JOB's remake was a whole lot more linear, satisfying, and less...let's face it, weird, than the original. And don't forget ROMEO + JULIET.

I also have a feeling many like the remake of INFERNAL AFFAIRS more than the original...

I like the guy. He is easily the best thing in Salvation, but he does seem to have the knack of being cast in films that look like they are going to be terrible. Salvation WAS terrible, and Avatar looks hideous, so Clash... There isn't much hope for.
