Would you go see a sequel to Independence Day with this title?

09.12.2012

Independence Day poster slice

Unlike the sneak attack sprung on us by the aliens of INDEPENDENCE DAY, we've known that sequels (yes, sequels) were coming for a while now.  What we haven't known was just what they would be called, which was tough for those fans of the first movie as it's hard to get extremely excited at a party for "the untitled INDEPENDENCE DAY sequels."

Well, it's time to get excited.  The potential titles have been revealed, and you're about to become the hit of the party.  Because the sequels are currently being called ID FOREVER - PART 1 and ID FOREVER - PART 2.  And even though Emmerich has no problem calling himself "a 3D skeptic," both halves of the sequel are still going to be post converted into the money-making format.

Meanwhile, co-writer Dean Devlin revealed in a recent inteview with Total Film the element which he thinks was essential to capture in a new ID4: "The thing that really hit me about the movie is how much love there is in it: between the characters; that the filmmakers had making it; that the cast had for each other. As we're approaching a sequel we're focusing on that aspect of it. Because I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."

So there you have it - loveability.  If you read my opinion you know I disagre, but most of you also disagree with me, so that's okay.  In other news, don't forget that INDEPENDENCE DAY is being re-released in 3D on July 3rd, 2013.

Click here for past coverage about just how the sequels came to pass and here for the question of whether the movies could be made without Will Smith.  And speaking of which - could they? What do you think these days?

I like the ID FOREVER part, but I think they should drop the part one and part 2, and come up with a different name for the second one. I think it's kinda lazy to just stick a part one and part 2 on the end of it, and call it good! Be more creative!! I'm ready to see a trailer though, and they HAVE to bring back Goldblum, Smith, and Quaid!!

The title is of little significance to me

Im not a fan of doing sequels over 16 years later, then again its better then reboot? The title really makes no difference to me, i'm not that interested in a sequel no matter the title.
I have absolutely zero interest in this if Bay is attached to it.

NO!

The first movie sucked; I'm certainly not going to subject myself to another piece of cinematic crap like the first one.

The first one was fun popcorn, but does it really need a sequel? I just don't think so.

I think this cash grab of an idea (as evidenced by the post 3d conversion) is horrible, and I have no interest in one, let alone two sequals that are way too late. But am I the only one who actually likes the original ID4? Or am I blinded by nostalgia paired with the cheesy awesomeness of fresh prince of bel air from the same era?

That was the suggested title when they were talking about it back in 1998, nothing new here. Though I remember them spelling it ID4EVER. Same thing though.

"I think that was really the key as to why it worked for everyone. It was lovable."

Really?!? And all this time I thought it was the goofiness that everyone (or rather myself in particular) enjoyed back in the days btw.

Oh and NO I wouldn't see any of the sequels the corniness of the first one was enough for me.

The real question is--would I go see a sequel to Independence Day at all? No. No I would not. Even Jeff Goldblum, Will Smith, and Brent Spiner couldn't make me like the first one.

Title sounds unintentionally hilarious. Part One is "Forever" and Part Two is "Really, we mean it, Forever."

This seems just really late. I work with people as old as this film. Will Smith is the only actor in that movie who still has any real star power. And I actually liked that movie, warts and all. But I can really care less now. Not to mention all the more recent (and likely superior) alien invasion movies that have come out in recent years. I mean, yeah, it was a major success, but

Here's hoping that the aliens this time still have the same firewall protection on their hard drives as GoDaddy.

Maybe the "Forever" part means Will Smith gets trapped in an endlessly-looping alien invasion, Groundhog Day-style? Either that, or it's just a lazy brainfart that sounds like it belongs to a bad 90's spin-off comic.

Wasn't that the exact same title they mentioned 10 years ago?

Oh no wait it wasn't, back then it was called ID4ever. Huge difference. Anyhow I'm pretty sure these sequels will suck regardless of their names or the involvement of Will Smith. Why are they making these anyway? I always thought Independence Day was one of those films nobody nowadays knows why anyone liked it at the time. Like dated fashion or music.

Yeah...can't wait for the continuing story of Earth under attack by aliens that you can knock unconscious with one punch to the supposed suit of armor that the real alien inside is wearing.
