Rumor: would you like to know who is on board for the next two Terminator movies?

06.08.2012

Schwarzenneger in Terminator on a motorcycle
Once upon a time, James Cameron expressed his view that the next TERMINATOR movie should be all about Arnold - seems like someone in a decision-making position finally realized the sense in that, because yesterday Arnold shared a big scoop on his place in the future of the TERMINATOR franchise.  And what he has to say is some absurdly exciting news indeed.

“I can’t say to much they want it held in secret if you know what I mean, but I will say that next year I will start filming it and it’s going to be one of the hardest films I have ever done I can tell you that already for sure… they have six months set aside just for filming, so I will be training and getting into the best physical shape I possibly can before filming starts. It does follow Salvation although some of the producers and franchise owner were not to happy about the job McG did with it but they felt it was good enough to continue on and they want the fifth and sixth installments to be the closing of the franchise.”

What with THE EXPENDABLES 2, THE TOMB, THE LAST STAND, and TEN on the horizon, and now two new TERMINATOR movies filming in 2013 to top it all off, I think it's safe to say that Schwarzenneger isn't just back but back in a big way.

You won't hear me complaining.

Edit: the original source of this news is a blog which has since been taken down, hence the revised "rumor" status of this news.

Extra Tidbit: I always find it funny when I hear "the producers were not happy about what [so and so] did with a franchise," because their producing duties must have included approving at least some of the director's decisions.

Man Arnold is getting older. He looks so much younger in those pics. If I didn't know better I'd say someone photo shopped another actor's head on his body in those pics. I REALLY hope this rumor is true, and these last two movies are epic! Arnie is the Terminator, and needs to remain front and center in the films!

I didn't mind Salvation. It had some good bits in it but with the next I personally think if they're going to have Arnie in it then he should be the real life fellow that the original Terminator was based on and John Conner finds him rotting away in some Skynet facility........ Or something to that effect. He's a bit to old to play something that apparently never gets sick and never gets old unless they do a CG of him but we all know how we feel about that.

I think Arnie appearing as an actual terminator is.......desperate. Age gracefully Arnie and accept roles that fit into that.

"It does follow Salvation..."
Best line in the quote. I happened to really like Salvation and found it chock-fulla Terminator Easter eggs and action. I think the fact that McG made it automatically makes it hateable to many, but I loved it and thought it was a great chapter in the series. Bring on T5!

I actually liked Charlie's Angels, and thought Salvation was an overserious, silly bore.

Totally agree with you Silverload

That had such a great opportunity for Salvation and blew it. I just can't respect that movie. It felt like it was trying too hard to reference the first two films. In T2, it felt like Cameron came up with a scene THEN thought of a reference. "Like..."Ok, t-800 and t-1000 fight in the mall...oh hey, how bout Arnold crashes out of the shop window like he did in the nightclub scene in the first one?" where as Salvation felt like they came up with a refernce first, then built a scene around it. " Ok, we need to find some way to put that Gun and Roses song in there...."

Geriatric Terminator tries to kill John Connor in a retirement home.

Unless Cameron has made huge advancements in CGI, and/or we are supposed to believe that terminators age the same way humans do, this is a very bad idea.

Now they need to hire a visionary director who will take this franchise seriously. Someone who won't give us the candy coated stylistic Mad Max-lite type of future, but instead give us the nightmarish 'humankind circling the drain' future we saw in the Cameron films.

If it follows from Salvation...

...then maybe they can bring back Bale. Salvation wasn't very good, but Bale didn't deserve all the hate he got, and with a better script/director - and with Ahnuld - I think he'd be great.

Arnold, I love you, I really do. But please say "I won't be back."

The Terminator was a machine. It didn't age. It'd make the franchise look silly to have a machine that doesn't ago look 30 in the first one and 60 in the subsequent ones. And like Cameron said when they asked him to return for T3, the story ended with T2.

For the love of God...I'm begging you...

As stated numerous times on this site I am an Arnold loyalist. I grew up on him, idolized him, got into bodybuilder (natural, couldn't and wouldn't take the juice no matter how much I came to educate myself and understand it...maybe when I"m in my...anyhow) please just let this franchise die to preserve his legacy. Not all legacy's need to be revisited or even have closure (although I enjoyed the last Terminator, even more so than T3) but again let us see Arnold go the way of a Liam or a Clint,

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Get Bale back as Connor and its going to be gold. I wish there was a way to bring Michael Biehn back into the mix somehow. It sucks they killed off his character as it was by far the most interesting one of the original.

Personally Ive always felt Arnold shouldve never returned after T2. Logically, infiltrators that all look the same do not work. And him being back in T3 did not work because it was not the same T-800 we all came to love in T2 so I felt no joy in his return. Bringing him back in T5? If it must happen, make him a villain again cause it wont be the same

I get what you're saying. They did however try to explain why his model was in the film(T3). He went for John because of his emotional attachment from his boy hood experiences.

It's absolutely great that Arnold is confirmed as on board. They probably will do some digital de-aging. Also, I wonder if they'll call Justin Lin back, since he was attached to the film but left after Arnold's personal problems dissolved the project initially. I did really like Terminator Salvation and am glad they will continue the storyline in a sense.

Great news if that happens

I never understood the hate about Salvation. It certainly ain't T1 or T2 but I prefer it to T3. The action and special effects were top notch and the script was ok despite its flaws and plot holes, some of which are inherent to a time-travel modified "continuity". I found it to be great entertainment.
Now I'm glad to see Arnold coming back and I guess they're gonna have to recast Connor again since I don't see Bale coming back to the franchise. There's a lot to do to bridge the gap between

I find it funny that when you have a movie with obvious flaws in the script, Ridley Scott gets a pass and McG gets so much hate... Some people are really trying hard to not admit that Prometheus is not a very good movie, it's just good entertainment, like Salvation. I guess it all has to do with the director's previous work, expectations, pride and prejudice.
