Would you play a Boondock Saints video game?

03.23.2011

I know it’s cool to hate on BOONDOCK SAINTS these days, but I am an admitted fan of the original, as I suspect many of you out there are as well. And I also presume many of you were pretty disappointed with the lackluster follow up the original movie last year. Julie Benz? Ugh.

So, in lieu of a third film, director Troy Duffy is looking for a new way for fans to get a fresh take on the series. Annnnd it’s a video game. Uh oh.

"We're thinking of making a video game out of Boondock and I went and listened to these guys pitch me the game and they had already done some programming," Duffy tells Reuters. "They had already built part of the game and I got to play it."

"The Boondock fan base wants to have a beer with the MacManus brothers and then pick up a weapon and fight. With a video game you can increase that kind of intimacy, where they can actually be the brothers and hang out and do some shooting and have some fun."

Yes, it would be cool to have a GOOD Boondock Saints game, but seeing as major studios with hundreds of millions of dollars can barely craft worthwhile FPS games these days, I don’t hold out much hope for a lower budget Saints title. Plus there’s the generally accurate “movies don’t make good video games” curse, rivaled only by the “video games don’t make good movies” one.

So, would you play a Boondock Saints video game?

Extra Tidbit: I think my favorite movie-based games were a few of the LOTR titles. Those were pretty decent hack and slashes.

God, I feel like a weirdo now...

Granted, All Saints Day wasn't nearly as good as the first movie, but I loved it! It had some really interesting ideas as far as scenes go (the plan vs. the actual raid on the Chinese drug plant), the dream featuring Rocco and Julie Benz' homage to Willem Dafoe: the whole package was pure cheesiness, but absolutely fun to watch. Following the formula of the original was probably the wrong way to go about making the sequel, but I thought it was a fun movie and worth the wait. I'd personally want

As for the video game, I'd be interested in playing a demo as long as Duffy and more importantly, Flannery and Reedus, had some input in the making. After that, I'd decide whether to buy it. Besides, Flannery and Reedus are criminally underrated, and need more work.

I saw it at the Cinemas Palme D'or in Palm Desert, California. There were more than sixteen of us there. Where was that link supposed to go?

These Days?

I had no idea it was cool to hate Boondock Saints. If that's the case, consider me James Dean. I've always been baffled by these films, people who have great taste in movies love them, I just don't get it. "There was a firefiiigghhht!" After that line, I laughed all the way back to the box office and demanded a refund. A video game could be cool though.

I love the original, and really enjoy the hell out of the sequel so I'd give a Boondock game a whirl.

Don't get the diss on Julie Benz though. She's hot as hell.

Totally...on both counts. Is it just me, or is Benz even hotter as a brunette?

hell no!! the sequel was one of the worst movies ever made... troy duffy is a hack, and im willing to bet this guy will never make another film in hollywood again.. the first one was ok, i never understood the hype around it.. but it was ok.. the all saints day was just a pile of b movie crap.. making a game would be a bad idea and im willing to bet it'll flop as hard as all saints day did... nobody played reservior dogs video game.. i dont see this being any better

I'd like to see the series continue, as the second film (and yeah, it did mostly suck) had an ending that suggested more. I really like Boondock's form of vigilanteism. So, if the game is actually good, I'd play it. But the key word is good. I can see this being totally screwed up, but I can also see it working very well.

Don't really care about the characters anymore...but I'm all for Movie-based Video Games. I always leave the theater wanting to play a game similar in style to what I've seen. Even if it's shitty...I'll enjoy it. And then there are hilariously bad games that are fun to play. Those are the best.

I would play the game.

The first Boondock Saints movie is a classic. It has a great balance of humor and action. It also has great replay value. The second one, not as good but still gives The Boondock Saints a good name.

I'm not one of those fanboys of the original but enjoyed it for what it was and def. don't hate it but to call it a classic is a little much. But the second one, which I had really low expectations for, was a piece of garbage and went way below those low expectations

No way in hell. I despise the first movie. I've yet to build up the courage to waste time on the second.

Hmmm....

I wasn't aware that it was popular to hate on Boondock these days. Gee, I'm glad you informed me on this matter. I think the first movie is brilliant and the second, while not as good as its predecessor, is still very entertaining.

First movie is gold!

I know there are alot of haters out there but the first movie is pure gold. It's not the best made film but damn is it a fun ride. Plus it's pretty impressive considering it was from a first time director. However that's where my praise for Troy Duffy ends. Anyone who has seen the documentary on him knows what a jackass dick he is. The man had an opportunity of a lifetime and pissed it all away cause he thought he was hot shit. Any aspiring filmmaker, myself included, have every right to smack

Considering what a douche Troy Duffy is I'm happy that the sequel bombed. That movie was simply godawful. It had none of the charm of the original and just seemed like Duffy was trying to send a big "Fuck you" to the film community. Well they sent you one back by bashing that flick and causing it to fail. As much as I enjoy the original I hope this guy never makes another movie.

I know I'm gonna get blasted for this, but I never understood the cult following for this or Donnie Darko. Two HIGHLY overrated movies, in my opinion, but to each their own. I know I've enjoyed crappier movies. Though, if you're a fan of Boondock Saints, check out the documentary "Overnight" about Troy Duffy, dude's bat shit crazy.

I wouldn't read too much into Overnight. It's only half truthful and done by a couple of vindictive people who worked with Duffy and didn't get all the money they wanted. So, they made a documentary that slammed him.

I think we all enjoy a few "Overrated" films. Something attracts us to a certain role, or subplot and hooks us. I happen to be a huge fan of BS, but I can understand why most people blast it. But I had the pleasure of meeting Troy last year at the dvd release party for BS2, and I can honestly say I have never met anyone who loves his fans and their fandum of his work so much. Many movies are maligned, but most people who create these works have a tendency to be complete doucheknuckles. It's

More Saints in any form please!

The first film is a classic. The second an often maligned slice of brilliance just as good as the first. Rewatch it without any preconceived notions or expectations set by the first and you'll see - it's just as great as the first. Of course - i also love Ghostbusters 2 so take that for what you will.

But if it's up to me - I'd like a game, another movie or three, and a graphic novel. Long live the Saints!
