Wrestler 1st look

02.08.2008
There are many instances where you hear about a director’s next project—especially a director who picks and chooses his movies carefully—and you read casting news stories, blog postings, and rumours, but it never feels like a reality until you actually SEE something from the film, be it a poster, production still, a trailer. This is one of those moments, as we’re treated with our first look at Mickey Rourke as the lead character in Darren Aronofsky’s THE WRESTLER. There was rampant speculation on Aranofsky’s next project, that I didn’t give much thought to the fact that he’s making a film set in the world of professional wrestling. But check it out, he is.

Rourke plays Randy “Ram” Robinson, who is forced to give up his wrestling career due to heart problems. He gets a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper (Marisa Tomei, who continues to impress in darker fare), but is soon drawn back to the ring by the prospect of a rematch with his former nemesis the Ayatollah. This sounds great. Aranofsky is one of the most visually talented directors working today, and I’m thinking THE WRESTLER can do for wrestling movies (what wrestling movies?) what RAGING BULL did for boxing movies. Click on the photo for a hi-res version.

Extra Tidbit: Nic Cage was originally supposed to star in this one, which is too bad for him. It could have done his career some good.

I'm pretty excited about this as well. Can't say I was a huge fan of "The Fountain", but I absolutly loved "Pi" and "Requiem". Plus I'll check out any film with Mickey Rourke. I think he is such an under-rated actor. He's going to be one of those that just keeps getting better with age I suppose.

Still yet to see his next "Requiem!"

I don't know what I should think. I loved Requiem and can relate to a lot of it, (yeah I know wtf right?) loved "The Fountain" visually but the story needed some major help. But the man has some major talent but how do you follow-up after Requiem? But he is married to an Oscar winning hottie (Rachel Weisz, please go see the Ralph Fiennes triple role in the underseen or heard of "Sunshine") so never or less he should still be around for years to come. Yeah terrible run-on sentence I know.

myownconfiction

Hey, Myownconviction, wrestling stories are fake, ridiculous, and just plain stupid at times. But the amount of risk it involves and the deaths and often paralysis inducing injuries it causes are all real.

DaMovieMan

Haha ya Movie Man, it's so hardcore with all the scripts. I don't care about stuff that really goes on. I've seen beyond the mat. I get it, some wrestlers do get hurt. But the point is it's stupid as fuck, and that it is all just a really big soap for men. So don't give me this shit about how extreme wrestling is. I agree I'll wait to see the movie and if it looks good, but please don't tell me it's real. I used to be really into it. It's fake dude.

Ummmmm not all wrestling is fake

This is Darren Aronofksy people, wrestling isn't only what you see in those late-night shows where it's stupid as fuck. Real wrestling is gruesome and by the look of that picture and how banged up Rourke looks, i'd say its real as fuck.
Have some faith.
Can't wait for this movie!
PS: Isn't he doing a movie called The Fighter after this? What happened to that?

eh

This is a very interesting turn for Aronofsky especially after The Fountain which i really enjoyed. I hope its supposed to be like old school wrestling where it was a little more real than the WWE nowadays. I have faith in Aronofsky

To Booyah Achieved

Yeah I'm with Booyah on this one guys. This sounds stupid as fuck. I mean wrestling was cool when I was in middle school; but for such great talent to be spent on a movie about a fake sport, and try to make it out to be a serious award winning drama just doesn't seem smart to me. I guess We'll see.

Nicholas Cage was too busy signing on to "National Treasure 3" and "Ghost Rider 2, 3, 4, 5-11"... douche. His career went downhill years ago.

Wow...

Am I the only one who thinks this is a terrible idea? Are people just psyched because the don't want to admit their boy aronsofsky might have lost his damn mind? How can you create tension leading up to the final re-match if the. sport. isn't. real. c'mon people.

NO NIC

This sounds really intriguing. Every wrestling movie I've seen were some of the shittiest movies I have ever watched. But I have to say I'm really glad Nic Cage didn't take this role. He's such a wuss compared to ol' Mickey. I think this is the perfect follow-up for him after Sin City. Way to go Mick!

I love Mickey, Darren, and the idea of this film. I bet its going to be what Barton Fink wrote, and never got produced.
