Write Your Own Review: Kick-Ass!

04.16.2010

The buzz online for Matthew Vaughn's KICK-ASS has been near deafening. Ever since it opened to rave reviews out of Austin's Butt-Numb-A-Thon, early reviews have ranged from highly positive to absolutely spectacular. Our own Chris Bumbray says in his review that the film is a "must see" noting "I can’t remember the last time I’ve had this much fun at a movie!"

But that's not to say that the movie will be for everyone. Roger Ebert infamously came out against the film in his one-star review. The movie is currently rolling with a 75% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes so it's not universally loved. It does seem to be appealing to a specific audience though.

With seemingly everyone having the chance to talk this movie up, it's now YOUR chance. The movie opened last night at midnight showings and we'll leave this article up all weekend for you to write your own review of the film below. And if you've got a Movie Fan Central account (and if not, why don't you??), you can head to the MFC and post an official review on your profile page. Please keep your thoughts spoiler-free and remember to be polite when discussing the film with others.

I'll leave you with an exclusive chat with KICK-ASS stars Chris Mintz-Plasse and Clark Duke from last year's Comic-Con.

Is it just me (I'm sure most of you will say it is) or is this movie just fun but not great? I loved Big Daddy and HitGirl, but the rest of it was...dare I say, a lil' mellow? Maybe even boring at some parts? It just seems like the cast have all this potential energy waiting to explode and then it hardly ever happens. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie...but to me it's just very cliche', a lil' too simple, and not that big a deal. I obviously expected more.

The world comic book characters live in is a bright and fantastical one. Interesting costumes, flawed heroes, comically alliterative names (Pepper Potts, Dr. Doom, J. Jonah Jameson), carefully choreographed violence, all leading to a plot point or moment within the character arc meant to teach the reader something about the world around them and hopefully about themselves. Spiderman teaches the now cliché “With great power comes great responsibility” while The X-Men teach that you can fight for a world that “… Hates and fears [you]”. Even Iron Man conveys a knight in shining armor mentality following Tony Stark’s need for redemption. Fortunately, Kick-Ass has none of these redeeming qualities and is the better for it.

Kick-Ass follows Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) as he decides to don a costume and mask to fight the injustices of New York. Though his exploits rarely end in success, he is taped fighting some thugs and becomes a nationwide phenomenon via YouTube. The stardom attracts other costumed vigilantes in New York to Kick-Ass’ door, the brutish Batman want-to-be Big-Daddy (Nick Cage) and his borderline psychotic eleven year old daughter Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz).

Kick-Ass is a refreshingly crude and violent comic book adaptation that stands head and shoulders above its pg-13 counterparts by simply being aware of what it is at all times. This self awareness flips the conventions of the genre on its head while using the same conventions to define itself. The first act is reminiscent of most comic origin stories with the exception of the “defining moment” needed to propel the protagonist. Spiderman’s Uncle was murdered, as were Batman’s parents. These events, along with billions of dollars and a radioactive spider forced these men to become heroes. Not Kick-Ass. All he wanted to do was to be cool, and being cool is what the movie is all about.

Undoubtedly the most talked about aspect of this movie is the violence and the age of the character as well as the actress dishing it out double-time all over the screen. Chloe Moretz is mesmerizing in her portrayal of Hit-Girl and brings a real sense of awe to her extremely violent character. Moretz is perfectly cast in this role as you almost believe the brainwashing done to her by her father is real. She has no remorse for those she kills and is a well tuned machine that revels in the carnage around her. The violence in the movie is pitch perfect throughout with elements of gore and humor pushing it forward at all times and only toeing the line of extreme brutality well into the third act.

Not to be out done by Hit-Girl, Aaron Johnson is a young actor that is sure to be on everyone’s radar from now on. Johnson plays Dave with the type of loveable nerdiness that almost puts Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker to shame. The character shines among the rest of the ensemble cast, and Johnson’s performance is the glue that holds the narrative together for the entire running time.

It is clear from the title that this is not a movie for everyone, and it is certainly made for adults, teens, and the occasional mature kid (if Chloe Moretz is mature enough to play this role there are children out there mature enough to watch it), but it is a welcome departure from the normal spandex clad super hero flicks we are all used to seeing.

Great fun and how about that soundtrack. Perfectly paced, funny and great cinematography. I'm going to see it again.

The movie is called Kick Ass, the title alone should tell you what the film will be about. How can anyone be offended by the film? The title says it all.

Offended?

No one is making people see films against their will. If you're offended by the material - don't go see it. It's called freedom of choice and the choice is yours.

Pure, unadulterated awesomeness. I can't even get over how badass this movie was. And seriously, people who are "offended" by it should FUCK OFF.

Greatness.

I just feel sorry for those that don't "get" a movie like this because they're missing out on something truly and incredibly inspiring.

Awesome!

Had a total blast seeing Kick-Ass. The film was so hilariously over-the-top and ultra-violent, how could I not like it?

I also liked how this film really isn't your typical superhero/comic adaption. In fact, it kind of twists all these elements on their head. Nic Cage also surprised me as well. 3 out of 4 stars

MORE THAN A PLEASENT SURPRISE ...

... and so far the best movie of the year. And yeah, Hit Girl stole the show, but I was also pleased with Cage's performance. Ebert is sooooo dead wrong about this movie. Oh, and this movie is not for fanboys, it's for fun. So have some while you're at it.

In my all-time Top 5.

It was great from beginning to end. As badass as Hit Girl was, Red Mist ended up being my favorite character. The last scene in the film(and the last line of dialogue) was perfect. I will see it again soon. 10/10

great but not legendary

I loved it. I thought the ending was highly entertaining but somewhere in the middle I got a little bored. It is a highly entertaining movie. I heard the buzz and as soon as I did, I didn't watch any news or clips or trailers. As soon as I decide a movie is something I want to see, I shut down. I like to go in as fresh as possible.

It is not a masterpiece, story-wise. But it does deliver on that geeky, kick-ass way. I would put it at an 8/10.

And by all means go see it.

Kick-Ass is Incredible.

"Kick-ass" is on the same level of cinematic masterpiece as "The Dark Knight," "Sin City," "Watchmen," and "X-men 2" Everything with this film is on point from the performances to action to wit, charm, and direction.

When it comes to acting Aaron Johnson handles this movie very well and proves to be the perfect person to embody our titular character. Nicholas Cage actually plays his age and does a great job of reminding us he's an Oscar winner who has been in some of the best movies out

When it comes to acting Aaron Johnson handles this movie very well and proves to be the perfect person to embody our titular character. Nicholas Cage actually plays his age and does a great job of reminding us he's an Oscar winner who has been in some of the best movies out there while bringing his bravado to Big Daddy. Christopher Mintz-plasse bring a little bit of Mcloving to the proceedings in his portrayal of Red Mist. Mark Strong proves once again that if you need a good villian, then you come to him, and he delivers again as mobster D'Amico.

The Supporting cast, led by Clark Duke as Johnson's hilarious best friend, are more than capable amongst these powerhouses. Yet EVERYONE...and I do mean everyone will be talking about Chloe Moretz's lovable psychotic turn as the ultra-cute and ultra-deadly Hit-Girl. She really is incredible in this role, and i can't wait to see her in the remake of "Let the right one in" once that comes out. I read a previous review not too long ago where someone said it would be nice if she gets nominated for an Academy Award for this role...in a perfect world that would happen, and it would be greatly deserved...because she's that good here.

The Violence here was fast, unrelenting, gory, realistic, and never over the top, but still brutal enough to show you just how down and dirty this flick can get.

The Dialogue here is some of the best i've ever heard..laced with wit, humor, relevance, satire, and references up to whazoo. Not to mention there's some quotes here that I just can't get past because of the greatness of it...

"With no power, comes no responsibility.."
"Show's over Mother-F**ker!!"
"We had a sleep over and watch the Ugly Betty box set..."
"You want to go fight some crime?"
"What's with all the high-fives....I'll give ya a f**king high five!"
"You have everything under control!?!? You're grabbing a f**king Bazooka."

The music here was really different, with a lot of different scores and soundtracks during crucial moments that actually extended the sequences. My favorite is the song they played at the beginning and the end of the movies, with special nods toward the 28 weeks later song being played during Big Daddys action scene. Great stuff, and definitely worth taking a look at the soundtrack once it comes out. If it isnt already.

The Execution and Feel of this movie is also something to take into account because of the vibrant colors, slow-mo cuts, freeze frames, transitions, and gritty as well as flawless shots that seems to blend through each scene of this flick...making it all the more beautiful no matter what was happening.

AND last but not least...there was a true love and loyalty for the source material. Its all you could want and then some. This movie doesn't shy away from the subject matter as most other flicks might've because of its mature and violent content. And even though this movie has already gotten in trouble because of its material everything is still here in all its glory, Which just makes it all the more incredible and revolutionary.

There's really nothing else i can say except..."Kick-ass" is THAT GOOD. so......SEE. IT. NOW! And prepare to get your ass kicked.

Nuff' Said.

YAY!

I don't know what I was really expecting with Kick-Ass. I guess I wanted a kind of a comedy that sort of parodied super-hero films and a little action. What I got was something much more. Not only is Kick-Ass a fantastic time at the movies, but it is a much more nuanced film than the trailers make it out to be. It even manages to tug at the heart strings!

My wife and friends didn't want to see this so I went alone. They missed out on a great time at the movies and one of the funnest films

My wife and friends didn't want to see this so I went alone. They missed out on a great time at the movies and one of the funnest films I've seen in a long time. The cast does an amazing job, and this is a star-making turn for Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl steals every single scene she's in.

A word on the hype. The movie sort of deserves it on the one hand, but I think I had almost reached the saturation point and in hindsight I wish I hadn't seen a lot of the clips floating around the net as I feel the cinematic impact was diminished since I'd already seen these out of context.

[minor spoiler...I lknow against my policy] Also of note, is the soundtrack, which was point perfect especially the use of Ennio Moricone's theme from "For a Few Dollars More". It was glorious.

The film isn't perfect and does have some pacing problems towards the middle. But it is telling that Kick-Ass is a better film than many of the ones it targets as satire.

The film is a hard "R" with lots of swearing and violence. There will be a lot of haters out for this one. Especially concerning Hit Girl. People will be fighting themselves to jump on the bandwagon talking about this. But, just like 300, and Dr. Manhattan and people's issue with his nudity, I think that says more about the person complaining than the film itself.

Bottom line: If you're at all remotely a comic fan, do not miss "Kick-Ass".

Classic

I found myself genuinely tense and at the same time bursting with laughter when Nic Cage lets out the famous "Swiiiitch to Kryptoniiiiiite" followed by "the reveeeenge of Robiiiiiin".

Very few films can accomplish that feat. So Kudos

P.S : Is it just me or were there cues from Sunshine and TDK at points in the film ?

Ebert is a little old anyways....

Best movie with Nic Cage that didnt involve his "Nic Cage Hair" in a long time. A little too much build up and not enough action I think, but it was certainly entertaining and thats what those movie things are for.

Fu Ebert!

I also just got back as well and wow that movie blew me away! Definitely the best movie of the year with shutter island right behind it. It was great from start to finish and had all kinds of laughs from beginning to end. Not to mention it was nice enjoying a Nic Cage movie after such a long time. But the one who did it for me was Hit Girl, wow what a performance. I mean I feel so weird saying this because shes 11 but I think I love her lol

Ebert is an asshole because his opinion varies from your own? Really? Fuck you! I saw this and I enjoyed it, but to call someone as influential as Ebert an Asshole because he did not like a movie that you did is messed up, especially after what the man has been through over the last few years! Do I always agree with Ebert? NO (See his Die hard 1 and 2 Reviews), but have a little fucking respect. This was a decent flick that ALOT of people will not understand, and Ebert is just one of them. I don't want to say it kicked ass

But it did.
As expected Chloe Moretz and Nic Cage stole the show for me. But that's not to say everyone else didn't perform admirably. They did.
I really dug the soundtrack. Even more proof that the 28 Days Later theme (In The House - In A Heartbeat) goes with everything.
My only real complaint doesn't have anything to do with the movie. It has to do with the ads for the movie. They're making out to be a straight-up comedy. It's not. If you know that going in it makes for a better

Pretty solid movie, very relatable story to a comic book nerd. Awesome action, pretty gory, and swearific. This movie is pretty damn awesome, only complaints are that it's a little slow at times, and some situations are a little cliche and would never happen. But it's a superhero movie! Who gives a $h!t? Definitely worth checking out if you like superheroes and their movies.

very well done, nicely written, well acted and like some of said the pacing was smooth. reminded me of a mix of blade and the first spiderman in theme and in many other elements. good stuff, even though different this is what watchmen should have executed.

It was uber-violent, and perfectly paced. Just the way I wanted it. The true stand out was Crazy-Nic-Cage, not Serious-Nic-Cage, this was the Nic Cage I grew up with, this was the "Raising Arizona", "Con-Air", and more recently "Bad Lieutenant" Nic Cage. God bless that man.

THIS MOVIE GETS AN A+

Totally awesome comic book film with a great story and a perfect cast! Nic cage was brilliant as big daddy and I loved the Adam West parody I nearly wet myself, so funny!! Hitgirl certainly steals the show though, she was awesome, one of the best characters in movie history! I really hope there will be a part 2, very funny, great original and tons of fun film!!!

I say it Kicked Ass

I give the film a solid B. It was extremely fun. Still, it did hit a dry spell in the middle of the film, and I am not as wild about Nic Cage as most people seem to be. However, I did really enjoy it.

Kick-Ass

It was definitely below my expectations. I was expecting it to be funnier and more satirical of the superhero genre. It played out as a straight action movie in a lot of parts with some mildly funny banter. It was still an enjoyable flick nonetheless.

6/10

Very uneven. Doesnt live up to its hype. Sometimes more self-aware than a Kevin Smith flick, and sometimes taking itself more seriously than any of the film it is supposed to parody, and its not as clever as it thinks it is.
And why does it focus so much on that boring and predictable high school romance based on a misunderstanding ? Fanboys will most likely give this film more credits than it deserves.

EDIT: About 8 to 10 people actually walked out.

yeah there were A LOT of pretty obvious tonal and thematic consistency issues.

Pretty uninteresting lead actor, an ending most could guess 100 percent correctly within the first five minutes...

P.S. As much as I hated the GF subplot, she was fine and at least i enjoyed looking at her when she was onscreen!

P.P.S. Big Daddy is awesome... nic cage is not.

C+

It was alright. Sometimes it was really fun, but it did have tonal problems. And it was actually pretty cliche in many aspects that it shouldve been making fun of the superhero genre. Also, I guarantee the film will be one of the worst movie going experiences because of the audience this movie attracts. I'm talking lowest common denominator, people who LOVE to make "funny" comments during the film. Wait a week or so to weed out these morons before you see it.

I should I have read your comment first. I was unfortunate to be in one of those screenings with those annoying people.

A-

my wife says I "Love" every movie I see and that my opinion no longer holds any value when it comes to movie reviews... But I "HATE" a lot of movies. My problem (if its really even a problem) is that i'm IN LOVE with Hollywood and no matter what comes out onto the big screen I find myself picking out all the good things in it to the point that I kind of like EVERY movie I see for one reason or another. This movie however isn't just another film that I found myself enjoying because it was

This movie however isn't just another film that I found myself enjoying because it was something to see on a Thursday night. The action was well choriographed, the actors were well chosen, the gore was just right, the comedy was dead on and the effects fit perfect with the pace of the film. The only reason it gets an A- and not an A+ (or a 3.5/4 stars for you official raters out there) is cause the hype surrounding this film that I have been following for over a year now exceeds the overall package I opened last night. The story is the biggest flaw, as minor of one as it was since all the other positives makes it almost unrecognizable. But I mean, it was a weak story line. But it was fun, entertaining, new, modern and well worth the $$ to see in on big screen. All go and enjoy and make your own opinion. -Roz

I've been following this movie since I first saw a posting about it on here more than a year ago. After finally getting a chance to see it last night, I definitely will say that it's more than worth the hype. I know it's not the kind of flick for everyone, but those who want to see it already know what to expect. I must say that it should've been called Hit-Girl because she stole the show. I never read the book, so I came in with a pretty clean slate. I really enjoyed where the story developed

Matthew Vaughn successfully merged humor, moving characters and insane violence that I haven't really seen in a while. I highly recommend people to check this out and I know I will be seeing it again soon.

LOVED IT.

But why do ppl make it seem like it 75% of ppl liked the film then its still not "worthy" enough? last time I checked 75% of those who reviewed the film was the majority. Like all things in life, once the hype dies down, will it matter who hated it or loved it? YOUR OWN OPINION is what counts in the end anyway. Everyone loved UP and I thought it wasn't bad, but nowhere near the masterpiece ppl claimed it to be (it was actually a step backwards from Wall-E). Kick-Ass Rocks!

Believe the hype.

My review here- [link]
Seeing that video reminded me- Clark Duke is the one who nobody's talking about in this film. You laugh everytime he appears, but he's in the background to the great stuff with Johnson, Moretz and Cage.
