Simon Kinberg talks X-Men: DOFP, and which cast will return for sequel

May. 27, 2014by:

If you were to take a look at Simon Kinberg's writing credits before seeing X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, you might be a little on edge. The man has written some movies that aren't exactly fan favorites (JUMPER, THIS MEANS WAR) and more importantly, is partially responsible for what's considered a disappointing end to the initial X-trilogy (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND). Everyone's deserving of a second chance though, and I'm glad Kinberg got that chance with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, as it's one of the best of the series.

Here's what he had to say, regarding the 70s vibe of the film:

When I first started working on the script, Matthew Vaughn was going to direct the movie who did X-Men: First Class, and one of the things he really wanted to do was explore different time periods, because he felt hed already done the 60s with First Class. We didnt want the events to take place right after, but see what had happened to these characters ten years down the road; see the real repercussions of the events of First Class. And 1973 appealed to me because I was born that year, but more because it was a flashpoint for a lot of different thingsthe end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of Watergate. Then, I started looking at the events of 73 and I saw the Paris Peace Accords, and thought that would be a great backdrop because the film is really about war and peace, so it felt thematically rich and potentially visually rich.

Utilizing Quicksilver, knowing that the upcoming AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON would do the same:

It was pretty clear-cut what the parameters were, and they werent particularly tough on our side. The only thing we couldnt talk about was The Avengers, but I probably wouldnt have talked about them because when we meet Quicksilver, hes a kid living at home in 1973. They have different restrictions because of the way the deal works, although thats way above my pay grade. We decided we were going to use Quicksilver way before they decided they were going to use him in The Avengers, so we just made the decision independently. Early in the script phase, that character was going to be a young Juggernaut, but Bryan felt wed exhausted Juggernauts powers in X-Men: The Last Stand, and he wanted to see a mutant we hadnt put on film before who had an interesting visual power.

In retrospect I can see how Quicksilver might have been a gamble, but now that the film's out, he's obviously a fan favorite. It's a good thing he's set to return for the sequel! Kinberg also had a bit more to say about the cast in regards to X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. There were a few key scenes at the end of DAYS OF FUTURE PAST that hinted at where the story could go (with either the "old" or "new" cast). Looks like Kinberg has a pretty good idea of where that is, and who we might find there.

In regards on which members of the cast X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will focus on:

It will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.

Spoilers for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST below!

Given that the change in the timeline altered what has happened with the "original trilogy", as evidenced by Wolverine running into Jean Grey and Cyclops, is it possible that any of these characters might pop up in Apocalypse? Hard to see how, unless time travel still plays an aspect in the upcoming film. Obviously Wolverine is a shoe-in, given the actor's willingness to return and his lack of aging allowing him to, but who else might appear, and how?

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is out in theaters now!

Who would've thought that this guy steals the show?

It wouldn't be a proper Age of Apocalypse story without Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Archangel. I wouldn't mind if they retcon Havok into Scott's older brother. I also wish Banshee would return. Without him and Alex, the First Class team only comprised of one junkie telepath, his chemist, and a hairy gigolo with bone claws that couldn't even shred anything tougher than meat.

If the movie is taking place in the 80's, I'm thinking that Cyclopse, Jean, and Storm would only be about 10 years old, so unless they are recasting I don't see how these characters can return. So far the movie will probably have: Xavier, Magneto, mystique, quicksilver, beast, gambit, and havok. Wolverine is possible, and if so it would be cool to see Sabretooth again. Maybe Scarlet Witch will be added as well.

I'm sure we could figure out a rough estimate of age for Jean and Storm but I'm not sure right off the top of my head. However, we do know that in the 1980's Cyclops would be in his early 20's because he was in high school in 1979 during the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I totally forgot Cyclops was in the first Wolverine movie, which shows how much I think of that movie. Anyway, they've already recast Emma Frost and Gambit, so I don't think the producers are trying to maintain continuity with that movie.

While I would say you have a point they are keeping Gambit about the same age. Taylor Kitsch is about a year younger than Channing Tatum so the age of the actor is negligible in difference.

I thought First Class was very good. Saw DoFP today and it was awesome...and I say that now...before I get a chance to hear anyone nitpick it to pieces - the rise of Marvel has given a kick up the backsides of the competition. Fox has woken up and is handling what assets they have with much more care now. Seriously, what a blast of a movie.

Isn't it hard to judge a screen writer on some of his work, since he really doesn't have a final say on how his creation is brought to life?

My one little bit of concern is the Wolverine element - if you watch X-Men1 he's a rouge and an unknown and doesn't want to be part of the X-Men and I know if you start linking it all back to DOFP being sent back etc it just mind fucks you man ! I'm all for more Wolverine but let's not put him in the hero position 30 years before he met the X-Men. I'd like to see more of Quicksilver, Cyclops & Juggernaut - by the way kudos for the people slating Halle Berry only part of DOFP I didn't like was her on screen - I'd rather Denzel Washington in a white wig played that part !

The events of DOFP rendered the events in the original trilogy basically obsolete. It doesn't matter that he met them in X-Men 1, because we're on a different timeline now. This upcoming Apocalypse story probably never happened in the framework of the original trilogy timeline; I'm thinking something they did when they sent Wolverine back in time allowed it to happen.

The Four Horsemen

I enjoyed DOFP. It was fun and Quicksilver definitely stole the show which was surprising in a good way. As far as cast for Apocalypse I'm pretty sure I read it was going to be a sequel to First Class more than a blending of the two franchises like DOFP was. It would also make sense that the X-men and Villains that may have died at the end of First Class become Apocalypses Horsemen. Apocalypse has been known (on multiple occasions) to take a fallen or lost hero or villain and re-animating

Nothing would be cooler than seeing the look on the teams faces when they see an old comrade back from the dead ready to kill innocents. It would be a great moment to bring out the feels.

I want like a 3 hour film and half of it in the 80's with Apoco with his horsemen and then half in the present where Apocalypse rises again with new horsemen and fighting the older Prof. X's gang...

I believe the original cast with younger actors portraying them will be brought into the fold. Hopefully Singer makes the right decision and makes Mr.Sinister one of the four horsemen. Also, since Kinberg said the time travel aspect may come into play again, hopefully that means Cable and considering the X-Men stopped one terrible future, another one was created, the Age of Apocalypse.

SPOILER ALERT

1. Was Kitty awake for days on end keeping Wolverine in the past? The answer is yes obviously but, not entirely possible.
2. The entire reason there was a plot at all in the past is because Xavier couldn't get off that serum for 5 minutes to read Wolverines mind. Even if Wolverine was lying, no bigs, get back on the serum.
3. That first conversation between Xavier and Magneto in the plane - Magneto expressed genuine emotion over Xavier leaving.... Only to throw the entire

3. That first conversation between Xavier and Magneto in the plane - Magneto expressed genuine emotion over Xavier leaving.... Only to throw the entire sentiment away. Essentially - Magneto had NO character arch whatsoever.
4. Quicksilver. Best part of the movie. Could have resolved the whole plot in the first 30 minutes.
5. How does "injecting" Sentinels with metal give him control over all their electric and computer systems?
6. Mystique's arch was extremely weak.
"Hey don't kill"
"But I want to"
"Seriously... Don't kill"
"Nah, I'm gonna go kill"
"PLEAAAAASE "
"Okay fine"
6. How does Mystique not shooting one guy convince the government not to go through with the Sentinel Program - given that ONE GUY just picked up a football stadium, carried it several blocks.... And dropped it on too of the WHITE HOUSE?
7. The past Xmen team was weak overall. We're watching the sequel to Xmen First Class and it just so happens they needed the "future" group for the plot, but the team we're REALLY supposed to be rooting for was just really underwhelming.

I know it's a comic book movie, I'm supposed to suspend disbelief but the critical praise for this movie doesn't match up to what I saw.

Dude totally agree loved the film but for me film didn't address :

Wolverine future has his metal claws back
Prof X being back
None of the younger mutants KP and IM had aged since XMLS
How do the Sentinels of the future harness the power of both Rogue (absorbing powers when fighting ice man and sunspot) and Mystique when they are both present in X1-3 yet Trask says he's needs bone marrow and brain tissue to develop the Sentinels ?

As I said proper mind fuck !

"None of the younger mutants KP and IM had aged since XMLS"

XMLS cam out in 2006. It is now 2014. The actors themselves have aged 8 years. As for why they aren't much older, well, the original trilogy was always set in the "not too distant future". That could mean five years or ten years. Take your pick.

Cool if Apocalypse uses the First Class cast

The more McAvoy/Fassbender the better. But I would like at least one more movie where we have the full original cast fighting together: Xavier, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Beast, Jean Grey, Rogue, and Gambit. Maybe they'll use Apocalypse to somehow send Channing Tatum to the future so he can be play Gambit alongside the original cast. But since Cyclops was mainly sidelined during all of X2, we haven't had most of the team together since X1.

Rogue will be too young in the 80s. Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey will be recast. Gambit has already been recast.

That's weird....we went to a popular theater in a very populated area and saw the 6:05 show and there was no problem. We slipped in to see the end of Godzilla again afterward and that theater was almost as crowded as X-Men (in a much bigger theater).

Maybe it's just more popular in certain areas.....

im in the suburbs of nyc. maybe its just the theater. every seat is a recliner and nice. The theaters are only 60-75 people big. I'm new to this area but the closes theater may be just the most popular one in the area.

Saw Godzilla instead this morning, almost no one there

Days of Future Past was really solidly-written. Hopefully, this will allay the fears about Kinberg's involvement with the Star Wars sequels. Young Juggernaut? Interesting, but there's more potential with a speedster's powers. DOFP's Quicksilver still looks awkward and doofy but the exuberance of Peters' performance overcame that. I was giving it some thought though, and much as I love the Time in a Bottle sequence, how is he able to listen to the song when he's running at super-speed, unless

Excellent news! That was actually a question that I had and was curious about, whether or not any of the original cast would be featured. It seems a shame to waste the opportunities that were created given the end of DOFP. I hope they bring Cyclops back into the action in a big way. Words can't express how stoked I am for Apocalypse. DOFP is the best movie of the genre I've seen in a very long time.

If they're going to cast a younger Storm to be apart of the fight in Apocalypse, I would love to see Lupita Nyong'O cast. She would be perfect and a big improvement over Berry's version.

I'm assuming they're going to have all younger mutants of the original cast go up against Apocalypse since the film will take place during the 80's.

My preferred cast

Charles, Beast, Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, Gambit, bigger role for Colossus, re-cast Rogue, re-cast/re-write Iceman to be funnier, Angel, Storm (I guess...)

As far as age of actors and timeline, I kind of think "screw it." But I really like Famke...

If they ever wanted to cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Kitty Pryde, though, I'd give them all my money.

That would be a good lineup to go up against Apocalypse. I'm thinking they're going to be using younger versions of each mutant of the original cast (besides Wolverine) in the film since the events of this will take place during the 80's.

But I would love to see older Cyclops and Jean have a big, vital part in this film as well, considering they're both back, alive and well.

Colossus is younger than Cyclops, Storm, Beast, Jean Grey, etc. He'd be a baby in the 80s. Ditto for Angel, Rogue and Iceman.
