X-Men: Apocalypse rumored to be a direct sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past

Dec. 6, 2013by:

This might be a new record: less than 24 hours after X-MEN: APOCALYPSE was announced by Bryan Singer, the first rumor has surfaced online for movie. Bleeding Cool believes the new film will be a direct sequel to X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

So, as of now, here’s how I believe it stands, based on intel from folk who’d been telling me an Apocalypse film would follow Days. Days of Future Past will lead directly into Apocalypse. There’s a clear narrative thread that will string the two pictures together, and the character of Apocalypse is a good part of how this will work.

The site also says cast members from both the "past" and "present" timelines in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will be needed for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, but several new characters will appear in the film as well. I wonder if/how the new film will be connected to the X-FORCE movie Jeff Wadlow is writing. Exciting times for comic book fans, and I'm very intrigued by Fox's plans for their comic book movie franchises.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will be released on May 23rd, 2014, and X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will land in theaters sometime in 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Which new character would you like to see in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE?

Y'know...

Back in 2003 I picked up an issue of Wizard that was released sometime around X2 and the issue presented concept art by Andy Kubert who tried to design characters for the upcoming X-Men 3 film. At that time Juggernaut and Gambit were one of the characters that many people would have hoped to appear in the film.

Then came this image: [link]

It's a concept image of Apocalypse had Fox used him in X3. What do you guys think? Anyone else own this particular issue? ">

The sad thing is I could actually see them doing something like that rumor. If they make him an alien as that rumor suggests I will be quite upset. Apocalypse is the first ever mutant how can you not explore that awesome concept? I can see the possession aspect working for his horsemen but Apocalypse needs to be seen in all his physical glory. I also don't like the idea of Magneto being a horseman, enough with him being the villain this is the one where he needs to lead the Xmen to victory. Let

Let wolverine become a horseman that would be much more interesting.

anybody seen the animated Wolverine and the X-Men series?

if you have, you probably know exactly how this is going to go. *spoilers for the series follow* that whole series (cancelled after 1 season unfortunately) is based on the DoFP storyline. and the last scene of the last episode leads right into Age of Apocalypse. like some commenters said, they go back and time and change the future, but when they succeed and come back to present day, Apocalypse is ruling the world. I hope thats the direction they take.

Great series! It's a shame it only went the one season.

I'd love Gambit.....only if done properly. I'm happy with Taylor Kitsch taking the role on again (Carter was a whole lot of fun and the actor has definitely grown on me since his turn as the cajun). I'd like a comic book Rogue too...but unless the next movie introduces an alternate Rogue, that'll never happen. :o( Still, in terms of comic book movies, it's a great time to be old enough to appreciate what we're getting, even if I still spend more time whining about where they went wrong than

Very Cool

Maybe Fox has gotten their heads out of their asses, I have to admit, The Wolverine was much better than I thought it would be (it did still have its issues tho) and while the first trailer for DoFP looked ok, I'm still not sold on the amount of mutants and various other things, but just saying the name Apocalypse gets my attention, but seriously they need to bring back Cyclops and Jean

Both of these two movies may be to top heavy and fail, but it's amazing that we are finally getting these stories in the big screen. Just go back to X1 and see how dumbed down it was for ppl who didn't know anything about the xmen. My only complaint is, tho it would have obviously been copying Marvel, a post credits reveal like Thanos would have been much more epic than Singer's tweet.

Just let Apocalypse say these quotes and I JIZZ my pants!

"I am the rocks of the eternal shore... crash against me and be BROKEN!"

"I cannot be touched. I cannot be harmed. Watch me and tremble... for I bring the purity of oblivion to your world."

"I am as far beyond them as they are beyond YOU!!! I am the next step in human, mutant evolution. I am Apocalypse I am Eternal!"

Throw in some Shi'ar Empire, and I could die a happy man. But Rogue defiantly needs to start flying and get super strong so she can fuck Apocalypse up.

They're announcing this movie before it's predecessor has been released?

Does anyone else find this preemptive and pretentious? Maybe DOFP will be successful and maybe Fox can continue to expand their cinematic universe beyond these films. I can't help but compare however the way Fox is approaching it and how Marvel has approached it. Even though Marvel has an 8 year head start on Fox, Age of Ultron was never officially announced until well after the release of the Avengers. Even though Whedon knew WELL in advanced what the second film would be about I think it was

Even though Whedon knew WELL in advanced what the second film would be about I think it was very smart of Marvel to wait and see the success of the first Multi-franchise ensemble film they put out before revealing their next stage to fans. I get that Bryan Singer is excited to bring the fans what they want but still should have held off on revealing any plans for a sequel even if they had started moving ahead with it until after the release of DOFP. It could potentially bite them in the ass IF this movie goes south at the box office which I am not saying it will and probably won't.....But there's always the IF...

I see nothing wrong with teasing a sequel that is in the pipeline as a direct sequel. Though, it would have been awesome to find out opening night at the end of the film (i.e Back to the Future). Maybe BttF was common knowledge but I was kid and remember how cool it was to know the sequel was coming. Similar to the Matrix as well, I guess. But Marvel doesn't do direct sequels. Each film's actions and heroes affect that "Universe". Probably, a little tricky considering the amount of directors

There's no way this movie won't be successful with the joining of both casts, Bryan Singer's return and so many talented actors involved.

I would certainly think that X-Men: Apacolypse would be a direct sequel to Days of Future Past. So obviously the timeline that the X-Men alter in Days of Future Past lead up to Apacolypse joint the picture.

I just hope we get a good storyline with Apacolypse's background and that we can FINALLY see Cyclops being the badass leader that he is in this film. And as a die hard fan of the X-Men since childhood, having Gambit in this film IS A MUST.

I'm assuming the X-Men will prevent one future with mutants on the verge of extinction to one with humans

Wolverine's mind will return to a future where humans are enslaved and unlike DOFP, he can't be sent back to save the day.

Yeah Bishop's in Days of Future Past, so if they're introducing new characters in X-Men: Apocalypse than Cable would be far be the most obvious choice and would provide a very convenient opportunity to introduce the character to audiences and setup the X-Force movie.

The X-Men thwart one potential war with the Sentinels that eventually leads into another one, The Age of Apocalypse..
Tidbit... with a little computer alteration, Idris Elba could potentially have the right voice to do Apocalypse

Gambit and Archangel are a must for this movie.

With Cyclops leading finally, of course. And about new characters.... Mr. Sinister and the horsemen seem like likely options.

I'm getting a bit confused with the timeline. So far everything sounds like X-Men: The animated series - first Days of Future Past and now Apocalypse. Was Mr. Sinister and the whole Savage Land after Apocalypse? I'm not sure but even that's true I'd love to see Mr. Sinister in the next movie.

I agree. Gambit is a must have character for this film. I wouldn't even mind if they brought back Taylor Kitsch to reprise the role again.

Netforce, Mr. Sinister and the Savage Lands weren't a single story arc in the comics like they were in the cartoon. Sauron and the Savage Lands have been recurring elements in X-Men stories since the 60's. Days of Future Past was a two issue story arc published in 1980 and Apocalypse and Mr. Sinister were both introduced in the mid 80's and have featured prominently in a number of major storyarcs since then.
