Updated: X-Men producer says Channing Tatum will play Gambit

May. 13, 2014by: Jesse Giroux

UPDATE: According to THR (and other sources), Tatum is "confirmed" to star in a Gambit spinoff film after being introduced in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. No director is attached and the project is said to be "in development." We'll update as more details become available. - PS

Apparently Channing Tatum's meeting with X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST producer Lauren Shuler Donner went well, because the producer just confirmed Tatum will play Gambit.

While taking part in the X-Men X-Perience Global Tour last night, Total Film asked Lauren Shuler Donner what type of actor they are looking for to play the mutant, and if they were still interested in Channing Tatum for Gambit since he's shown interest in playing the character.

Donner says, "It is Channing," and also talked about why she thinks he'll make a good Gambit.

"Well, he's a rogue, Channing. He's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. He can handle the action, we all know that. And he has a really good heart, because I know him personally. I did a movie with him. So I think he'll be great for Gambit. He's a Southerner too. He's not from New Orleans, but he is a Southerner and understands that world. And you know Gambit loves New Orleans."

Lauren Shuler Donner also says the next characters she'd like to bring to the big screen besides Gambit are X-FORCE (which will be directed by Jeff Wadlow) and Deadpool.

99% of you weren't too happy to hear Channing Tatum was being considered for Gambit, and I'll be the first to admit I've never been the biggest fan of the actor, but I think he could do a solid job playing the character. He surprised many people with his MAGIC MIKE and 21 JUMP STREET, maybe he'll surprise us once again as Gambit.

I'm sure you all have something to say, so let's hear it: what are your thoughts on Channing Tatum playing Gambit?

No thanks.

So we're going to have a short haired Gambit with a bad accent (if at all) that IS or IS NOT related to the other terrible Gambit we saw in Wolverine? He'll probably wear a ton of leather, it'll all be black, he'll be able to spin his staff to fly (the only main connection to the Wolverine movie) and the X-Men won't even be mentioned. Yeah, no thanks. Sell the rights back to Marvel, Fox.

No.

Look I have no problem with Tatum. I think he's a blast in 21 Jump Street. I like his joblo attitude as well. But Gambit is one of my favorite X-Men. I do not want a talking potato playing him for the big screen.

Yes

He's an excellent choice for Gambit. Has the right look and thanks to his background in the South I'm absolutely positive he'll nail the Cajun aspect of Gambit, accent included. I'll always give credit to Channing because the guy has been legitimately trying as an actor for his past few films, sometimes succeeding no problem. Very psyched.

well they screwed the pooch on that one

The amount of people I know that cant stand him as an actor and the fact he is quite terrible in any serious movie he has been in, just shows these casting are more about connections and who you now rather than actual talent. Dude does well in comedies where his real life low I plays into every character he plays in comedies being dumb, this is not one of these scenarios. I wont even see it with him in it and I pray he is barely in Apocalypse.

I really don't think there should be a solo Gambit film no matter who plays him. I said below before he was confirmed for a solo film, the 3rd wolverine movie just needs to have him co-star with gambit and or cyclops. They always had interesting dynamics, and since wolverine has already faced mortality, him vs any bad guy alone will have no stakes in the film. I think the Channing casting COULD work, but I think they'll end up making Gambit basically a Wolverine clone and try to recreate

Gambit can't really carry a solo movie I don't think so. He could be half of it, but I don't think he could do it all, and Channing's resume is kind of similar - he needs a little help to carry a movie (Jonah Hill, Jamie Foxx, etc.)

I'm sure Tatum is a nice guy, but a good actor he is not. Go back and read Donner's quote, and you'll see she praises him in everything but acting. "He can handle action scenes, and has a good heart, and he's...uh, from the South too."

Hell Yes

Channing Tatum has been proving himself over the last few years that he is a capable actor! He has the swagger, the cockiness and the charm to pull of this character and I'm very excited to see what he does with this property!!!

the very fact that you start off defending him as being capable says it all, capable is another word for average which n Hollywood means connected and not qualified in any way.

A Gambit solo movie? What the hell happened to X-Force? I know LSDonner mentioned it's still in the pipeline in the video embedded above, but that thing was steam rolling along with an approved script and everything almost year ago. X-Force should have been cast and in production by now. I'm not keen on it but I can live with Tatum in X-Men: Apocalypse, but have little interest to see him (or anybody for that matter) in a Gambit solo movie. Just not a necessary movie.

If they're re-introducing Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse, then I would also like them to re-introduce Deadpool as well and also give that character his own spin off film too.

U.S.Agent

I actually saw him more like John Walker aka U.S.Agent. And for Gambit, my choice in the past was Jonathan Rhys Meyers, before Wolverine Origins.

I once bought a 4 part limited series about Gambit off the back of my interest in him via the 90's cartoon...but the comic book story went over my head - didn't enjoy it all. His live action turn in Origins sucked but I would have had no problem with Kitsch reprising the role - not his fault the character was so badly written. As it is, I like Channing Tatum and hope he can pull it off but if he gets the same kind of material, he'll be doomed too.

Tatum is one of the most overrated actors in Hollywood. Plus, how does Gambit get his own movie before Deadpool, Magento, Mystique, Cyclops, and a ton of other worthy characters.

The Magic Mike & 21 Jump Street career-praise are played out. I can't believe people are still fawning over him because of that.

Look, Channing Tatum got all that love because in those movies he was poking fun at himself which everyone wanted to see (Remember Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder?) because an emotionless expression doesn't equal dramatic-range.

In short he's good at playing a goofy dumbass than a wannabe badass. But, i'll keep an open mind.

Never cared for either one

Never cared for Gambit as a character and never cared for Tatum as an actor. So seems like a perfect match to me!

By the way it's not even that I hate either Tatum or Gambit, I've just always been very indifferent towards both.

I was never a big Gambit guy either - he energizes stuff - he was too similar to dazzler and jubilee etc. (I know their powers are different) He's not a bad character or anything, but I never knew why he got so popular.

They need to get back Cyclops - first order of business. Second is Archangel.

I was pretty happy with Taylor Kitsch in the role, the problems with Wolverine: Origins had nothing to do with him. But, whatever. If Tatum really wants to do it, then hopefully we will get a good performance from him. While not nearly a favorite of mine, I will say that the guy has pleasantly surprised me recently. I will agree with one of the posters below though, a creole from New Orleans has completely different mannerisms than just a southern boy.

I don't think he's mercurial enough but he did grow up in New Orleans so hopefully the Cajun accent won't be too hard for him. I honestly think that like Mark Wahlberg, he's best at comedies.

Casting Tatum is definitely a suspect cast job. I'm glad to hear he is from the South, but the South is not New Orleans. Understanding a Southern accent doesn't do all that much for you as you try to tackle a Cajun one. I have my doubts.

I'm wearing the shirt to prove I was here first...

Ever since he started campaigning for the role, I was supportive of it. I like him, sure he's a better comedic actor than anything, but when you have an actor who is at least good and very interested in a role, you typically get a better performance out of them versus having to convince them to do it in the first place.

safest, most bland choice they could make

Way to take no risk whatsoever, Fox. I don't even mind the guy personally, he seems alright, but range? Come on guys. He doesn't even have the range in his eyelids to open them all of the way. I refuse to believe Channing Tatum and Jai Courtney are the only male actors left out there.

but almost all here, who just "oh! i'm not gonna watch it if its tatum" attitude, will gonna be the 1st to watch it..like always..

For a Wolvie 3 film, I'd rather see Wolvie team up with Gambit and Cyclops for mission. At least one of them. I think he needs a non-romantic partner. Or hell remake wolverine origins. The story had potential just cut out a lot of it
