X-Men Producer Talks Deadpool Movie, Going For An R-Rating

05.13.2014

The X-Men movie franchises are on everyone's mind today with the news that Channing Tatum will be playing Gambit and the X-Men and The Fantasic Four will not be putting people to sleep with a crossover. So do you want to hear about DEADPOOL? I knew that you would.

If there’s one thing she is besides being creative and smart, producer Lauren Shuler Donner is very honest. As you will see in the video below, she tells us to act like WOLVERIN ORIGINS (underwhelming) didn't happen and to forget about X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (killing off key characters). Done and done.

HeyUGuys asked her about the DEADPOOL movie, a project that’s been up in the air forever:

"We so want to make it. We’re getting there. I think it will, but one thing now is the rating," Donner explained. "If we make it a smaller budget movie, we can go for the R-Rating. If not, then we push the boundaries of PG-13 which is alright too. We just don’t want to saturate the market to the point where it’s just not special anymore."

Ryan Reynolds did a great job with the character, and thankfully Donner went on to confirm that Reynolds is still attached to star and that she can’t see anyone else taking on the role.

I love it when Hollywood is honest with us, and she just laid out some hard truths to take away and to be prepared with when and if they ever unleash a DEADPOOL movie on us. In the right hands, I’m sure it would make for a great R-rated flick, how else are we going watch an assassin and mercenary kick ass?

Do you think they can make a DEADPOOL movie work?

Same woman who helped them eff up the entire X-Men franchise?

Not to mention the first incarnation of Reynool? Yeah, no thanks. I'm fond of saying this in my personal life, based on Beyonce's "If you like it you should - put it in your mouth." Otherwise known as, eat me.

That was bluntly honest

Remember, she's just one cog in the machine. She has to convince the guys with the $$$ that a DEADPOOL movie will make serious cash at the box office. That's pretty much the bottom line.

ummm...honestly? give it 5yrs

just cause she said to...yes, lets erase from our minds the end of a trilogy, and a prequel that's supposed to explain Wolve's adamantium.
...yea. While we're at it, let's also recast Jackman, make Xavier come back to life, forget about The Silver Surfer (and our petty attempt at Galactus), and lets also rewrite how Wolve is supposed to lose his adamantium. ACTUALLY, let's just jump on the DeLorean and forget 10 years of story telling on ANYTHING Fox has done with their Marvel team and let me

Hell...you'll go see it cause it has ur favorite character in it right?

I love Deadpool...with that said, and as much as I hate mickey, Walt has got their act together. The investment done on all Marvel products has force them to make a successful film be the lowest standard of acceptance when they're getting ready to submit a finished film to the public. They cannot afford to fk it up...Fox, Universal, Sony, WB, and Columbia...are just playing catch up.
...truthfully this film will most likely be released at a point in which the film company that owns it milks their main franchise to death.

...from the looks of it, I give it another 5yrs.

The key word in the title of this article is "Talks". They can talk all they want they are never getting an R rated superhero movie off the ground, not in this world of PG-13 and global marketing. The USA is not even the prime consideration for movie making these days, we don't make the studios enough money. We are just lucky they are still making movies in English.

Hopefully they can make a good R-rated comic book movie. The director's cut of Daredevil was R and was better than the original, so it can be done.

I dont think its so much a fascination with him as an actor overall. It's more so that, pre-losing his mouth in XMen Origins, he was actually playing a pretty decent Deadpool. And its a role that he is a big nerd about and has talked about ever since. So, unless I'm mistaken, general consensus is that he would probably play the character pretty well.

He played Deadpool in the WOLVERINE movie and did a solid job. BURIED demonstrated that he can act.

Hmm, an R-Rated Disney movie? Really?? I take it this will only be available on The Director's Cut/Unrated Version

meh

This would be awesome. But they've been saying this for years now. I'll believe this when Ghostbusters 3 comes out.

Revert all the characters to Marvel, all of them

I have more faith in Disney making an R rated Deadpool, after seeing Foxs first attempt.

Reynolds has said it'll be done right or he wont do it at all. So I'll lose faith if he walks away from the project

If/when this finally sees the light of day, it needs to open with Deadpool looking straight into camera and going "boy, this took a while, didn't it?"

Just Don't Become the Punisher

I kind of see Deadpool going the way of the Punisher movies. Both were R rated and lower budget films. Both were made with a 30-35 million dollar budget. Neither saw a great return in the box office. My hope obviously, as they mentioned in the video is that it could be as successful as the Blade trilogy.

Well I immediately thought of Blade, apparently some of you did too

Well I guess this is the second best news I heard all day regarding anything XMen related. The first being that XMen DoFP is not bad and entertaining, and that QuickSilver was a standout character in the film, if you can imagine that.

is she being honest?!

or is she saying what we want to hear.

it's a pretty well-known fact that fans want an R-rated deadpool movie starring ryan reynolds. this has been on the fanboy wishlist for YEARS now. of course a lower budget is easier to push the boundaries. how easy is it for her to say "yeah i hope to do this, but it's not up to me". she's a high profile hollywood producer. if there's nothing she can do, then what makes her comment any different from my buddy at the comic book shop?

I say they go for a smaller budget film with a 'R' rating. I really can't picture a Pg 13 Deadpool film considering how violent and fourth wall the character is.

Very glad to hear that Reynolds is still attached. This is one comic book characterthat I would love to see him play (again) and one that would actually benefit off of his persona and vice versa.

Agreed. Dont need avengers style effects. Keep it small and personal (look at Blade 1)

Exactly. Something along the tone and quality of the first Blade would be perfect.

Hasn't this comment been around for a long time? Like, two or three years about making R-rated Deadpool and nothing happen?
