Year One gets cut

Apr. 10, 2009by:

Despite a personal appeal from director Harold Ramis and producer Judd Apatow, the MPAA refused to lift the R-rating on YEAR ONE. Since Ramis, Apatow and Sony lost their one and only appeal, that meant one of two things could happen: they could release the film with an R-rating or they could cut it down to a PG-13. They chose the latter. The MPAA revisited the film and has now given the film a PG-13 for "crude and sexual content throughout, brief strong language and comic violence."

You might ask why, with the precedent of successful R-rated movies like STEP BROTHERS, TROPIC THUNDER and SUPERBAD, would Sony be so desperate to get a Judd Apatow produced comedy a PG-13? R-rated comedies have been performing better than ever and last year alone saw three earn more than $100 million. But unlike most comedies, YEAR ONE has a big budget (reportedly north of $75 million) and so far hasn't seen much in the way of positive buzz. A PG-13 rating would help bring in some of Michael Cera's teen fans and hopefully give the film a better chance to break even.

Extra Tidbit: I'm still convinced there's funnier stuff from the movie that they're not showing us...

I SAW A TEST SCREENING OF THIS LAST SUMMER...

Honestly I have NO IDEA why they would give this an R rating! There is no nudity that I can remember, there is a very unnerving but hilarious scene w/ Oliver Platt as a homosexual slave owner that owns Cera. But its probably the funniest part of the movie!! Dont cut that out! Its definitely not R rated, and honestly is a pretty good funny movie. Like Caveman w Ringo Starr meets The History of the World. Ill see ot again! And while Im at it since I never post here, saw "Ninja Assassin" on

you had me, you lost me...

Thanks a lot. what looked like a great r-rated comedy, has now been sucked down to the cheesiness of a paul blart film. I WAS gung ho for this, now, forget it. I'm so tired of this shit. Make 2 versions, let the adults see the r-rated, then bring out a "kiddie-version" after that.

Guess i'll wait for the unrated dvd now. So long box office, smell ya later.

[link] this movie will suck if you have to beg the MPAA so you can make money even if your name is Judd Apatow.

75 million

That is an awfully large budget for a comedy.

I'm going to wait for DVD now, I don't like with movies are cut down to PG-13. The MPAA is hampering the visions of the movie makers.

PG-13

For a Jack Black flick a PG-13 rating will certainly = more $$$ at the box office. Have fun tweens!
