Yet more dwarves! Here's Bombur, Bofur and Bifur from The Hobbit

Jul. 13, 2011by: Dave Davis

Yesterday we got a look at the "hunky" dwarves Kili and Fili from THE HOBBIT, but today we're back to the more traditional burly types that Tolkien fans are probably more accustomed to.

The latest pic features Bombur, Bofur and Bifur, played respectively by Stephen Hunter, James Nesbitt and William Kircher. This lager-loving trio is among the thirteen dwarves who join Bilbo Baggins on his fantastical adventure, brought to you by indefatigable filmmaker Peter Jackson.

Stuff.co.nz premiered the pic with this description of the ale-guzzling warriors: "Born and bred in the West, descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free."

Extra Tidbit: It seems as though we're slowly making our way through the supporting cast toward the reveal of our diminutive hero. Could that possibly be timed to coincide with a surprise appearance at some big event happening next weekend in San Diego?

So Thorin Oakenshield, Dwalin and Balin are left. Personally, I hope Bilbo gets a pic with Gandalf.

If there was any doubt these are the dwarves to be tossed around as comic relief, look at those weapons. A spearsword? A meatpounder-hoe? And a giant ladle.

The diversity Jackson's bringing to these guys is both surprising and delightful; I'm sure I'm not the only one who half-expected them all to look more or less like Gimli (Whom I miss very much...)The costumes are authentic and beautiful. And Bifur's hair and beard is epic. The character design so far is just outstanding. Can't wait to see what else is in store.

Same here. I was wondering how Jackson would distinguish 13 different dwarves. So far, apart from a few nitpicks here and there (Kili having no beard, Ori's bizzare hairdo), I like what I see.

On all the pictures we've seen dwarves look funny, "cartoonesque'. I don't like it. Gimli was way more realistic.

Also, (these kind of) dwarves don't really exist. That seems to be a main complaint about these pictures that are coming out.
But if you ACTUALLY think about it, thirteen of the main(ish) characters are dwarves. If they all looked similar to Gimli no one would be able to tell them apart. Just like in Fellowship. All the dwarves looked alike besides slightly different clothing and different colored beards. The only reason Gimli stood out is because he was the only one who spoke.

I don't want a childrens movie for the Hobbit, I want it to be along the lines of LOTR! I'm fine with colors aswell as design! This will be awesome!!!

Bombur

But Bombur does look like an obese version of the Mayor of the Lollypop Guild. A little scary. But I love him anyway. And that's true love.

Original Dwarf Concepts

I love that they are all such individuals and not cookie cutter characters. Agreed on the color thing that Higgs brought up, but I think overall, they look amazing. Can't wait to see Oakenshield!

They look like proper dwarves, but I'm not thrilled with the design we've seen so far. The color palette specifically - it's so muted and drab (not at all like the book, where each dwarf is introduced with a description of his brightly colored cloak). I guess this is to make the Hobbit films more continuous with the LOTR films, but the Hobbit really should be different in tone - lighter, more fun-natured, more childish in a way. This has been my major concern with the production so far, that

This has been my major concern with the production so far, that the tone will be totally melodramatic just for the sake of conforming to the (overly) serious nature the LOTR movies.

Reassuringly though, the faces on all these guys have been delightfully goofy.

I have to say, a little color does go a long way, but other than that, and the fact that Bombur is way too fat and keystone cop looking, I'm kinda stoked!

I love that they're all so unique. Nice to not have a bunch of Gimli clones running around.

Can't wait for this flick!

Yes. I love that each Dwarf has their own look. The dwarfs from the original cartoon were so samey... these guys are true characters! Awesome.

LOVE the designs!

There is definitely some post-Photoshopin' work apparent in some of these images but that matters not. If the costumes and characters are already this striking, just imagine what everything will look like together on film. I only wish we could get more than two movies!
